Not to mention Maverick just got in trouble prior to the mission for stealing an F-18 to demonstrate when he was supposed to be grounded. No one is crazy enough to steal a plane in this situation, let alone could manage to take off from a completely destroyed airfield. There's no doubt in anyone's mind in that moment who the hell is crazy enough and skilled enough to have done this. Only Maverick, it has to be. The fact that it's an F-14, an ancient plane Rooster would have zero idea how the hell to fly, but Maverick used to fly back in the day, is the icing on the cake. Everything about a rogue F-14 taken off from a blown-up enemy airfield is Maverick's M.O.

Got to love his dumbfounded expression. He's blown away by Maverick still being alive, let alone by some unexplained, unholy grace has stolen an F-14 and actually got it in the air from a runway that's literally in pieces and burning to the ground. A ghost risen from the grave, and then basically just inexplicably teleported into the air with Rooster as far as he's concerned.

Looks cool, and it was very glorified in these movies, but it certainly had its flaws. I thought the flat spin in the movies was unrealistic, but it turns out that the F-14's (at least the earlier models) *were* prone to engine flame-outs and unrecoverable (or extremely difficult to recover) flat spins, and the canopy issue was real too because of the flat spin. I beleive they addressed the flat spin/flameout issue in later versions though. Personally, as far as good looking fighter planes or that era, i kinda always liked the F-16 more (Now the F-22). Though, out of *any* plane.. My top choice for best looking will always be the SR-71/A-12. To this day that plane still looks futuristic.

Fun fact: He does the correct startup procedure in the 100% correct cockpit. That first button is turning the hud to air to air, the switch is turning the top screen to the camera on the nose, then he turns the first screen on and it cuts away (I presume he hits the other switches and then signals for air supply). The f14 requires air to start the left engine but once the left starts you can disconnect half the air supply (which rooster does) and then disconnect the right engine supply once the right starts. This provides power to the systems and then you can start everything else for the RIO seat without air supply. The HUD is also in air to air mode on the taxiway corresponding with that button from earlier and Maverick even manually moves the wings out of emergency stow sweep (past minimum sweep during flight for stowing on the ship) which is only done right before takeoff with the correct lever. Even the Rio seat, which is only featured for all of 2 seconds, is perfectly correct. To drive it home, all f14s were stripped of their components before moving to museums so the producers would’ve had to research a real cockpit and recreate it themselves on set. Pretty cool

"Maverick and Rooster steal F-14 Tomcat" I mean, "steal" is such a strong word... They just borrow it, ya know, without promising to return it...

The F-14's initial role was as the Navy's primary fleet interceptor. It was however a more than reliable air superiority fighter with many of the same capabilities of the F-15 Eagle, which thanks to the Tomcats success and its own is the most combat capable and proven fighter ever made. At least until the F-22 earns it's stripes.

The Navy never had a fighter that looked this good again. They should have sold them for warbirds. Iran's F-14s weren't a match for newer fighters, especially fifth gen fighters anyway.
