Doordash pays drivers $0.75 a mile, with no other compensation whatsoever. Also, that 75 cents is just one way. We do not get compensated at all for driving back from the delivery. Just so you know. Without at least a 5 dollar tip a driver will probably not make minimum wage. We dont have 5 "tables" at a time like a waitress. We have just your delivery and a lot of expenses to bring it to you. Some amount of danger, too. Especially during a storm or bad weather. I drive Doordash because I am diagnosed with severe bi-polar with schizophrenia. I am medicated but still need to take 5 or 6 days off in a row every month to stay home depressed. Gig economy has been a god-send to me. I can work a job, now, that doesn't care if I need an emergency week off out of nowhere. I work Doordash because it allows me to work for the first time in my life. Shouldn't I get paid minimum wage? We deserve "server size" tips much more than servers do because we are paid SO much less.

Prices at restaurants even fast food restaurants have gotten ridiculous. I went to Taco Bell and ordered six Dorito tacos. Each taco has probably about a tablespoon or tablespoon and a half of ground beef. I have been ordering this and paying $12 for the six tacos I thought that was high. Two weeks ago I went to Taco Bell. They charged me $18 and some change For six Dorito tacos. That may have something to do with why some people are not tipping. If I’m ordering food out of a drive-through and I get sent an iPad pressuring me to tip I usually stop going to that restaurant. Full meal sit down restaurants I will tip. Over-the-counter or drive-through restaurants. No I will not.

What about Doordash? We get $0.62 a mile from Doordash, which is basically (and legally for tax purposes) car expenses. What do you tip us? We make less that wait staff, but the brought you your food from the kitchen. I drove your meal from across town, at night, on a Friday, during a storm, on a holiday. I get $0-$2 tips. I do the job because I am severely bi-polar with schizophrenia and need to take 5 or 6 days off in a row every month to stay home depressed. Gig economy has been a god-send to me. I can work a job that doesn't care if I need an emergency day off. I work Doordash because it allows me to work for the first time in my life. Shouldn't I get paid minimum wage? @@Jude-gy9qu sorry to hear about your hardship. Sincerely, from the bottom of my heart I feel for you I’ve been in tough situations myself. People deserve to be tipped. I’ve delivered pizza myself and had situations where I’ve drove across town right before we close with 20 pizzas and didn’t even get a dime. delivery people are getting ripped off both by employers and people who use their service. You fit into the category of sit down full menu restaurants you were not mentioned, but you should’ve been. You absolutely deserve a decent tip. Haven’t said that people are struggling just to put food on the table, so right now there are a lot of people who are not eating out and that must be affecting your pocketbook as well. Hope things get better for you. I wish you a happy healthy and prosperous new year.

Service industry companies should pay their staff properly. I wouldn't be surprised if the industry changed into gig work so that the companies have even less responsibility. Tips should be for doing a good job not expectation.

It's 2023 and we still have people living on tips in America. What a dystopian nightmare. You can't buy ANYTHING for $2 today, or $7. $30 should be the minimum hourly wage nationwide so we can have very basic things like housing and food. That doesn't cover anything else.

Who deserves the bigger tip, because people give me 2 bucks. I drive Doordash because I am diagnosed with severe bi-polar with schizophrenia. So, I know that bars generally make bank on their overly priced drinks. If folks like you and those in the restaurant business are only making $6 phr., who is reaping the profits? Because that is the person for which should be paying you folks, NOT the customer. On a side note, tipping was started by affluent wealthy white people who rode in Pullman cars on trains. They would tip black porters (waiters) for services of comfort rendered upon them. The better the service, the better the tip. Is was a status symbol/game to see who could afford the most tip. In essence, by today's standard would seem to be an insult to black culture. So by all means tip if you want to America. As for me, I work hard for my money, and I don't receive any tips, and seldom do I ever tip.

It's not the responsibility of the consumer to pay the employees wages, it is the responsibility of the employer. We get asked to tip an employee for handing our coffee over the counter at Starbucks. I already pay $3 for the black cup of coffee and now I should pay an additional charge of $0.75 to balance out the wages for their employer? The only party who is benefiting from this system is the employer. If the employ would share their profits to provide competitive wages for their employees than tipping would not have to be obligatory.

In the 1990’s I worked for a restaurant chain called “Lyon’s “ restaurants in Capitola, CA. I made the minimum wage at the time of $4.25 I think, plus tips, which could be upwards of $100-$120 for an 8 hour shift. We tipped our host/hostess and busboys. If we worked 32 hrs a week, I think, we had medical and dental benefits. So when I tore my ACL skiing in Colorado, my benefits covered most of my medical expenses. Can you imagine that?!? Oh, I also got disability payments while I was recuperating for six weeks post -op. I was also able to put myself through college with that job, working fri nite, sat nite and Sunday brunch and be free during the week for classes. I realize how extremely lucky and rare my situation was then and especially is today. It’s pitiful we can’t even agree to take care of and lift up our own species.

I attended a community college back in 1978 with an Iranian Student named Kouroush (Cyrus); and this was when the Shah Pahlavi was still ruling the country. Kouroush knew little to nothing about the Shah; being from a rural family. He was sent to the United States to receive a technical college education, and return to Iran to improve their existence. He confided in me that Iran was using oil as a principal point of raising money for their Treasury. They wanted to use nuclear energy only for heating their homes and running their stoves because their country was largely electric, like the the U.S. in the 1960s; when the utilities called nuclear the way to "unmetered power". If you examine U.S. apartment complexes built in the 1960s, they're baseboard heat with electric stoves. We've seriously misjudged this whole thing, and I'm afraid the world will be poorer for it.
