The Revenant is one of the best looking movies I've ever seen. I was blown away at how much better it looked going from BR to 4K.

I agree that movie was amazing. That opening scene just blew me away. Well-deserved wins for best director and best cinematography.

Its such a shame Fox got bought out by Disney and now Fox's back catalogue is highly unlikely to get released on UHD disk. They closed down Fox's home media department:(

What I love about Logan (2017) is that the super sharp crispy 4K resolution on the UHD Blu-ray is that it gives a raw looking grittiness on Logan's damaged broken injuries and the bloody spots and stains on the closing and skin..

Yes! Rogue One! Loved the bluray. Always thought it was shot beautifully. Was my most anticipated Star Wars 4k movie and didn't disappoint!

Ha only good Disney Star Wars film. Everything you could want really. I could watch that final battle scene 50 times and never get bored.

Alita: Battle Angel is brilliant in 4k and 3D, The Revenant movie is a Masterpiece. I haven't in 4k but I haven't played it yet 😅

I gotta pick up more Fox titles on 4k, The planet of the apes trilogy look amazing on 4k! I would also put a new hope which is done by fox before the deal!

Yeah both the Star Wars titles on this list were done by Disney Home Ent, not Fox.

Great list, Adam, despite the Disney blunder. I own all of these, though I have not yet watched them all. I might put Assassin's Creed in this list, personally. Or some of the X-Men movies. Or Deadpool. Or Kingsman. Or Trolls. Dang, there's a lot of good choices.

My guess is the only way we get ALIENS (1986) on 4K is in a box set with all the whole franchise. I would rather have a stand alone release, but I doubt that happens.

I agree. I have the Quadrilogy or however you spell it, but I rebought Alien on 4K. I love Alien, but I actually think I like Aliens better. They’re two different types of movies. I think Alien is more of a Thriller, while Aliens is an action movie, but honestly the inclusion of the Queen brings Aliens to a whole different level. And I should give a shout-out to the marines as well. They were great in that movie. In any event I’d love to get Aliens on 4K. I don’t care about any of the other Alien movies.

@@Whoopdido777 Yeah ALIENS (1986) is an absolute must and I would love to see how ALIEN 3 (1992) looks on 4K, but that is about it. I don't care about any of the other related films. Blu-Ray is good enough for them to be in my collection.

Revenge of the Sith and Rouge One was done by Disney Home Ent and so were the transfers, not by Fox. They don't count in the Fox list at all as they weren't done by the Fox studio and their team like the rest on your list. I'd also have included Red Sparrow, Die Hard and Deadpool 2 in the best of Fox 4K. Alita and and Ford V Ferrari were one of the last titles done by the Fox team before Disney shut them down for good. The final Blu-Ray release by the Fox Home Ent team was 'Underwater' early 2020.

The Greatest Showman was recently on sale at Cinema 1 for $9.99CAD and Rogue One was on sale at Best Buy Canada a couple of months back for $18.99CAD. I wish I would have bought them back then. I have them on regular blu-ray and felt they are good enough and that the 4K versions wouldn't be need but then every video I watch those 2 movies are in their lists. So now they are on my list and sadly Rogue One is getting harder and harder to find in stores at a decent price.

which 4k player do you use ??? i just ordered the Panasonic 820.....is that a good choice ? was gonna do the 9000 but i am only connecting to tv and then tv to my Sonos arc system.....cheers.....great reviews by the way

Sometimes the visuals of 4k movies outweigh the story. Its just visual candy that blows you away.

Even though I think they’re quite close in quality...personally I would’ve gone with Alien Covenant over Prometheus. While Prometheus was definitely stunning upon its initial release, I personally find Covenant to have a more appealing color pallet and the Dolby Atmos really sets it just a notch above Prometheus.

I would add an honorable mention for Terminator: Dark Fate. I believe it’s a 2K intermediate but I thought it looked incredible and the HDR is reference quality. Sound was also reference.

Many SF fans are going to love the first two Alien films on 4K. I'll never forget the premiere of the first one in the cinema. The sound was phenomenal with the seats vibrating in places. Great to see it with an audience too. John Hurt's famous scene scared the fertiliser out of some viewers!

Since Disney controls the Fox library now and they seem to not be in any hurry to release their movies on 4K, not good.

What A/V receiver do you have? I have a 7.2 setup and wondering how big of a jump a 9.2 system would make where atmos is concerned.

HDR does nothing for Alita Battle Angel, this wouldnt even be in my top 20 though I do agree with you on most of these. I thought a shout out to Predator would have been nice.. considered its bumpy road on home video at last this gets an excellent 4k release.. I also would throw Braveheart in there :)

Braveheart had scenes that looked amazing. Demo-worthy. But it was highly inconsistent with other scenes that were not up to the same quality.

Prometheus is my fav on your list. That is a movie I have watched over and over and always love it. Imo it is better than any of the Alien movies.

X-Men Apocalypse looks better than all of these movies imo. Alita was a good movie, but was disappointing in 4k on my JVC RS1000.

Alita is upscaled 4K and fake HDR that doesn't break 300 nits. Audio is decent.

It’s not “fake” HDR, which no doubt comes from Vincent. Low nits used in movies such as Alita and Blade Runner 2049 is the result of artistic choice by the film makers. Anything above SDR nit counts of 100 is still considered HDR. Think of it this way, as the old joke goes. What do they call the person who finishes last in his class in med school? Doctor. 300 nits used in Alita is still HDR.

@@MovieGuy365 Vincent has explained how when dealing with content in an "HDR container" (within a Codec used for HDR) 200 nits is actually the industry standard threshold above which something is considered HDR. 300 Nits is still above 200 Nits but it is used sparingly and it is not particularly impactful. Having said that, 4K encodes have a lot of other benefits that can make the picture look amazing, such as smoother colour gradients, more dark-grey shadow detail and deeper darks, higher bitrates (less compression), wide colour gamut, and of course higher resolution. In short, a movie can still look amazing without utilizing a high peak brightness.

@nacthenud I agree and that’s also the problem when terms like “fake” hdr is used. When people think that unless a movie has hdr that blows your eyes out, it’s fake.

Alright, poorly implemented HDR. RD's intent on BR2049 was to not have HDR and he's quite outspoken against it, so I'll accept that as being creative intent. But Alita, I've heard nothing from RR or anyone else regarding the lackluster HDR implementation, so I'm not going to just go with creative intent as a fall back.

re "Revenge of the Sith" - the detail really doesn't get a "significant bump up" at all. That is frankly nonsense. And it makes me distrust your assessment of 4K releases in general. This is a 2K film that has had an HDR grade added.

@@MovieGuy365 Well; you're wrong. There is little or no discernible increase in detail over the Blu-Ray, and to say that there is, is frankly delusional. The original trilogy has more of an increase in detail than any of the prequels, but you, like many, are dazzled by the cleanliness of the presentation of "...Sith" - even though its resolution is poor compared with the original trilogy. A punchy colour grade doesn't make up for what is essentially a 1080p product.
