Honestly, the weird jealousy and will-they-won't-they thing between Jack and Gwen is one of my least favourite bits of Torchwood. Especially the more we see of Rhys. Because I genuinely love Rhys' character, and I never thought- and still don't think- Jack and Gwen ever had any kind of chemistry together, and Rhys just deserves better than the revenge kisses and that whole thing later on in this season.

Rhys finally gets more screen time. He has some great lines in this one. The scenes he had with Jack were quite entertaining too. Ianto also went full badass when stunning those guys! :D

I cried so much during this episode, the wails of agony from the poor creature disturbed me so much. A very powerful episode and one of my favourites.

And finally, Rhys, long-suffering as the only decent human being on Torchwood, gets a bit of good fortune. I was always glad that the show took the time to make him sympathetic, instead of just making him an ass to justify Gwen's sleeping around.

They're all decent on a general level, and then they do some incredibly fucked up thing like hide their cyberman girlfriend in the basement or send people into the sun or God knows what. Tosh is okay since most of her fuckups are induced by outside factors but still, Rhys was like the only character with whom I never once found myself going "Why are you suddenly such an asshole idiot?"

Nah. Jack is a much more layered character because of Children of the Earth. He's not supposed to be the good guy; he's the guy who does what needs to be done at his own expense.

I personally never saw this episode as a critique on factory farming (or any other kind for that matter) but more of a critique on the terrible and inhumane lenghts that some people would go to for profit... I may be wrong but that's what I thought when I first saw it

If you enjoy watching Doctor Who and Torchwood then I suggest that you also watch Primeval. Primeval was an ITV (another main TV channel in Britain like the BBC) show made to compete with doctor who 2007 that ran for 5 seasons and aired Saturday nights when Doctor who was off air. It was about time portals opening up as doorways to earths past and different prehistoric animals would come through. It was a really good show to watch with several ongoing plot lines as well as the prehistoric animals. I highly recommend you viewing it.

In DW, it was mentioned that the government claimed the giant spaceship was a mass hallucination and other excuses were used for other incidents. It may have been said in Love and Monsters. If so, I don't blame you for forgetting...

Wasn't Donna scuba-diving (or something similar) during either "The Christmas Invasion" or "Doomsday"? And drunk on another occasion...? Of course, we also have Gwen in the TW pilot mentioning that Rhys thinks there's hallucinogenic drugs in the water system, to which Jack (rather aptly) replies: "Well, your boyfriend's stupid."

another side to the whole Jack and Gwen thing is they genuinely care about each other, as friends, and they also challenge each other. and here she was trying to prove him wrong.

I loved the side plot of Jack wanting to keep it alive so much and Owen putting it down was equally as heartbreaking. It’s definitely a PSA on animal cruelty and it was very solid for a torchwood episode.

I haven't seen this episode since it first aired on BBC America, but it has haunted me for years. I think that a part of the thought experiment with the ep is that here are some humans, looking at an amazing space whale, and thinking, Wow! The biodiversity of life in this universe is cool. "Live and let live", especially for this peaceful species. We are aligned with the protagonists of this story, who see a sentient being, deserving of empathy. And then there are other humans saying, "How can we exploit this creature for our own benefit?" This is, unfortunately, how a lot of humanity thinks about any creature not of our own species. Torchwood often seems to make a point of saying that human are among the most brutal, primitive creatures in the Universe, especially the ones who believe they have dominion over all of the creatures of the world, by divine right. Most of them will never expand their world view, never mind a more expansive "universal" view. And that "divine right" or brutal self-serving nature extends to creatures not even of our world in this episode. Good fiction makes you consider an improbable, impossible situation, and consider its real life implications. This is how I contemplated "Meat" for all of these years, and how we sometimes cannot allow ourselves--or are willfully ignorant about--the sentience of other beings.

I love how everyone in the comments are like "Oh my gosh it's Constantine" and I'm like laughing my head off because I'm like "OH MY GOSH IT'S MARY FROM CORONATION STREET!" 😂 The actor who plays Ruth is a soap star here and it seems like she's playing virtually the same character in this 😂

Due to the fickle nature of time in the DW-verse, the public being unaware of some of the alien incidents is explained by them simply being wiped from history (usually as a consequence of something the Doctor or one of his encounters caused).

I honestly dont understand Jack's instance on making Rhys forget. I honestly dont. Who would he tell, and who would believe him. Jack has Ianto to talk to so hes being hypocritical.
