Tori Baird Talks About Loosing Our Canoe & What it Means to Paddle Like a Girl - Baird Country Ep.2
Welcome to Baird Country, the podcast where outdoor adventure meets personal stories. In this episode, I sit down with a remarkable adventurer in her own right: my wife, Tori Baird.
Tori is the owner of Paddle Like a Girl, a platform where she offers introductory canoeing and backcountry workshops tailored for women. She's also the force behind the popular Instagram page "Tori Goes Outside," where she shares her outdoor escapades and inspires others to embrace nature.
During our conversation, Tori opens up about her journey, from her inspirations for founding Paddle Like a Girl to the realities of moving to a remote location and raising a young family there. She sheds light on her experiences as a mother, including embarking on remote canoe trips and winter camping adventures with a toddler and her five-year-old son, who has disabilities.
Join us as Tori shares her insights into the challenges and joys of her unconventional lifestyle, offering a unique perspective on the intersection of family life, adventure, and the great outdoors. We also explore what it's like to be married to a professional adventurer and the dynamics of balancing our shared passion for exploration with the responsibilities of everyday life.
So, grab your favorite beverage, settle in, and get ready to be inspired by Tori's incredible experiences and her unwavering passion for the wild. Welcome to episode two of Baird Country.

Charismatic Tori is an outstanding, five star mother & wife. So fun to hear Tori/Jim podcast. We watched every beautiful video you’ve made together and applaud her patience. It’s beautiful cinematography and it soothes & calms us, but with two kids, a dog, and a utube hubby whose DNA has Scottish adventurer, it comes at a cost. That rain episode looked like misery and storm of the century winds and we felt for you & then where H drops the water purifier off canoe on purpose as his rocks, was the moment I’d want to clock him. 😮 Plus, kudos, that’s a-lot of stuff you two haul, set up and portage. You must have learned how to compartmentalize & you ARE strong and definitely have our respect. Tori breezes thru it all due to her smart, calm thinking abilities. Love the hubby/wife banter. How did you two meet is our big question? Wesley seems like he’s more alert and animated with each passing week and soaking is it all up. ❤ Bravo BAIRD family!

First off...Jim, I am your biggest fan. Jim, thanks for facilitating this interview with Tori who is also an awesome and inspirational woman. I left England with my wife and son in 2004 and settled in BC, Canada. My wife and I have been canoeing together for over 25 years. I have been so privileged to have my wife leave her large family and follow me on a whim to Canada. My wife was born in Jamaica and joined her parents there when she was 10. Over the years we have often commented on the fact that we have hardly ever seen a person of my wife's ethnicity camping, hiking or canoeing. We had to stay strong as a couple when we decided to build a log house recently, it is in a forest, 3500 feet altitude. There are bears, cougars, bobcats and occasionaly Wolves up here. We lived in a travel trailer for 3 years using a 'porta potty' , melting snow to wash, cook with and drink. It got down below -36 a few times. My wife is 4'11 and very strong, physically and mentally, I am so proud of her. This last summer I suggested it was time to move onto solo paddling and I will buy a solo canoe this spring. My wife, Shirley, looks forward to take the next step to raise her confidence solo paddling. So, Tori, I think what you are doing by and filming your adventures with your lovely boys is a wonderful thing and what you do is of incalculable value to women and moreso women of colour. Like you and Jim, we work side by side on our laptops, together, most days my wife is a businesswoman and I am VP of the company. Shirley, in her spare time, is a motivational speaker, student pianist and aspiring writer. I wish you both a lifetime of great adventures, beautiful family memories and good health🛶🍻

Thanks Jim, you are a gentleman of good calibre...tough, yet not afraid to show your feelings. I do believe that us men who immerse ourselves in the beauty of Mother Nature, and who find peace, solace and healing in it need to encourage men of all ages who may be struggling with their mental and emotional wellbeing to participate in the great outdoors at whatever level they can. A few years ago there was a bit of a buzz amongst KZfaq Bushcraft Channels, facilitated by a guy in the UK, to put out a video called 'Show us Your Steak'...a discussion on mens mental health. I put out a vid and have been thinking of doing it again during Mens Health Week. Keep Up thje Good Work and pass our regards onto Tori.@@JimBairdAdventurer

I am very glad that you two did this podcast. Very insightful and inspiring. I’m another woman “born strong” and I also sometimes think twice about jumping in to help my husband for fear of appearing too masculine. I am subtly competitive and (usually) unconsciously lifting, carrying, digging, EXERTING as much or more… masking pain or injury..

Thanks a lot for that. I actually did film some large scale outdoor adventures for Field & Stream and Canoe & Kayak magazines before going on Alone and was working at creating video content full time for a couple years before going on Alone. It was tough to make ends meet though. I didn’t start doing KZfaq until a couple years after winning Alone.

Thanks so much to both Tori and Jim for creating this episode! I relate SO much to what Tori was saying about society as a whole thinking women can’t or shouldn’t be able to canoe trip without a man. I often go back country canoe tripping in all woman groups and we have also been asked multiple times if we need help carrying the canoe by men. I know they are likely just trying to be nice but I can almost guarantee they wouldn’t have asked a group that included men and that’s frustrating! I would also like to echo some of what Tori said and recognize all the men who don’t assume we are weak and incapable. I appreciate being given the space to learn new skills and be strong and empowered women in a male dominated activity. Jim and my own husband are both great examples of men who support and empower women in the outdoors. Thank you Tori for being a voice for strong women who love to do hard things and also for empowering women who don’t think they can do it! The more we can normalize this, the better we will be as a society. You are amazing!

Can I be honest right quick?! I’m obsessed with you Tori!!! I very much live vicariously thru you. I’m from Duluth, MN (please come visit!!) and I’m no stranger to the outdoors and all of the fun that comes with the seasons and the wild and all the gifts that the creator has to offer us. Our sons are the same age (Hudson & my Quartz) and what I love the most is watching you tackle the outdoors with your boys. My son is non-verbal, has level 3 ASD yet he absolutely positively LOVES all things outdoors. Watching you & Jim go on these adventures with Wesley has truly truly inspired me and has shown me that it’s safe outside and that Mother Nature is sooo healing and educational even for our children. Don’t ever give up Tori! You’re an inspiration to more mothers, woman, BIPOC persons than you can ever imagine 🫶🏽 Sending soooo much love to your home from mine 🤎

I wish I could sit around this table with you guys. There are things I can relate with Tori about, such as envying my friends who had cottages. As a teenager, I would look at the Canadian Tire magazine (rather then the Sears catalogue) to drool over tents and gear. But now, I get to enjoy the nature in all its splendour, with you and the family canoeing the Skitine. It makes me happy to see Wesley thrive as he has, and is visibly a happy little boy. You two make a great team.

Great interview and video Jim and Tori. Both of you are surely rugged and capable but YES when you intoduce your children it is definitely a challenge to be calm and moreso comfortable with what you might do without them in a similar setting. If it helps, I think any mother feels overly concerned even if it weren't in a wild setting but simply leaving the children with a new babysitter for the evening. I get it Tori and talking with each other is so very important, even just to help support each other AS YOU DO HERE!

Really enjoyed this! Been falling your families trip now for awhile. So cool to here about Torys back story. You 2 seem like an incredible team! Our family does alot of camping and tenting and I find so many things relatable. Also, hearing Torys' side of things really helps with seeing it from my wife's side as well.

I loved this interview and the chance to get to know more about Tori! I have 5 children, two who are special needs (one has Williams’s Syndrome) and have recently been taking them out camping by myself. I also recently purchased a boat for us to paddle up and down rivers to camping spots (I live in Australia). Thank you for your words of wisdom and sharing your experiences! And I identify with wanting to go on adventures with the kids, but also feeling the responsibility to make sure the kids are safe and having fun!! :-) I work for a Canadian Bank headquartered in Toronto. If I am ever out that way I will have to look into taking some extra time to attend one of your classes. :-)

This was just amazing. I am watching so intently and just love the bond/connection between you two throughout the podcast. I will be subscribing via podcast now as well. Related to KZfaq series, I am even getting non outdoorsy people into your series.

Hi Tori.. I watch your husband's adventures alone and also the family adventures with the children.. and I am always worried about what might happen if the weather changes really bad when you are on the river... and the canoe overturn.. I stop worrying when you get to camp. Then I worry about the bears.. Glad I just watch the video😂😂😂

Great podcast. First, Congratulations on Paddle Like A Girl. You have grown so much and seems like you keep expanding. My husband and I and friends do canoe trips but there is always so much more to learn all the time. It sounds like this would be for a beginner or intermediate canoeist. The camping part is bonus if you already do that stuff but if you don't, well there's a lot to learn. Oh both amaze me on your trips with the boys and North. But, as a mom myself, Tori you rock it. I can't tell you how many times I've said to my husband, "Tori is so calm in those rapids with those kids, or how does still have energy at the end of the day to set up a tent and cook dinner (I know Jim helps too). You said that you were full of anxiety but you sure didn't show it. I think all moms would have some anxiety with a child as young as Hudson and with Wesley's disability (which btw, makes my heart smile to see how far he's come). We didn't get into canoe trios until after our kids had grown. I'm a worry wart, so I probably would've been a basket case. Something that made me sad is that you feel because of your skin color that people look at you differently or may not take your abilities in the outdoors seriously. Oh my gosh, first, you are so naturally pretty and second, you are so good at what you do....THAT is what people notice. You should be so proud of all you've accomplished and how you make other women feel strong and able. You mentioned that Jim is so passionate about his career.....listening to you.... So are you. I hope some day Paddle Like A Girl will hit the USA so we can better afford to experience it. Thanks for all the honesty in this interview. Wishing you and your family all the best!

Listened to the podcast of this episode it was great 👍🏻. I especially liked the both of you revisiting a past trip that emphasized the challenges of bringing your children with you and how that changes how you approach a trip but even challenges you take for granted if it was just the two of you trekking.

This was absolutely awesome! I enjoyed hearing Tori’s perspective on the trip, being a Mom and feeling a bit anxious most of the time. Girl, I feel you. With that said, she never showed anything but strength and grace, through the entire trip. What a marvelous woman mother, wife. She is so inspiring to ALL women, thank you for highlighting your precious wife ❤

Special hugs for my favorite special family. The Wesley share poked my special-mama heart. I'll share this: when going through similar stuff I found my greatest comfort, in the midst of all the challenge and chaos, in spending quiet time with my darling and happy child, Suzanne. 💝
