Tornado rips through Nebraska causing "significant damage"

Weather officials urged residents in eastern Nebraska to seek shelter “immediately” as tornadoes moved through the Lincoln and Omaha metro areas on Friday, April 26.
On Friday afternoon, the National Weather Service confirmed a tornado touched down in the Lincoln area.
Footage filmed by Clint Hendricks shows the massive tornado swirl as he drove on Interstate 80 on Friday afternoon.

That is a perfectly formed supercell storm. There is almost NO rain surrounding the tornado. You dont see them like that too often.

I'm a driver for a flatbed company headquartered just south of Seward - been with them for 10 1/2 years. I've been trucking for almost 40 years, over half has been with Nebraska based companies. While I'm a Texan, Nebraska is second in my heart. I cried seeing the devastation caused by the floods the last several years. Seeing this hurts.. Prayers for all.

I hate to be that person, but the way the video is captioned makes it seem like there's a town called Lancaster. There isn't. Lancaster is the county that our capital, Lincoln, is in. This thing moved on the outskirts of Lincoln and hit Waverly, causing the roof of a warehouse to collapse and trap 70 people inside, as well as derail several train cars. That is the one in this video. Another hit Epply airport in Omaha and ripped up 4 hangers housing private aircraft. Another hit Elkhorn, an Omaha suburb, and flattened several blocks in a subdivision. Dozens, if not over a hundred, houses are damaged ranging from missing siding and beams to absolutely destroyed except for some foundation traces. It looks like a bomb went off. I would be very surprised if the one in Elkhorn wasn't at least an F4. Wind speeds were measured at 230 mph, it was over a mile in width, and it caused millions of dollars in damages. Those homes were all new and incredibly nice. If they were even on the cheaper end of the housing market right now at 300k per house, which I doubt they were as Elkhorn is a high priced area, well... Several blocks' worth of houses and were in the tens, if not hundreds of millions.

The diameter of the hole of the tornado on the cloud = 20,000 m, and the diameter of the trunk of the tornado on the ground = 10 m. We have a phenomenal effect of twisting the air as its density increases. This can be compared with a milling machine - a cylindrical cutter bites into the soil and buildings, and fragments fly around like chips in a machine. You have tunnels under the roads. If you seal them and open the hatches only in the state of Nebraska and 300 km away in all surrounding states (Kansas, Iowa, South Dakota, Wyoming and Colorado) - the air pressure in Nebraska will rise and the tornado will weaken or disappear altogether. Because a tornado is an ordinary centrifugal fan with a diameter of 600 km.

I witnessed this firsthand in Northeast Lincoln. Saw the funnel cloud spinning like crazy right out to my east, almost felt like it was on top of me. I didn't get my phone out until it was on the ground though. Then the funnel dropped really quickly, become violent looking and hit a building right to my north. Craziest thing I've seen that close. Got a video once it was on the ground

Saturday morning, (today) my wife and I went to check on our camper in Waverly. I didn't see any of the damage on tv. Driving on highway 6 was quite a mess. Metal debris laying along side the curb. Rail cars separated and on their sides. Steel girders ripped off a building along with most of the sheet metal.

We help save lives by observing and reporting storms such as these to the National Weather Service so the NWS can get updated warnings out to the public so the public has more time to prepare before a storm of this kind of magnitude impacts a specific area. @@kathymaxted9485 Thankfully we don't get many big ones but I was in the US for my cousin's wedding when I got caught up in the 2011 super outbreak. My cousin's best man was killed by an EF5 that picked up a huge tree and threw it into his home. Suffice to say I've never complained about the weather in the UK since.

In Google earth type the following coordinates. 50 52’ 46”N 96 35’ 49” W. I live in a suburb south of Omaha. Lincoln is only about 45 miles from me. It’s some kind of construction company office.
