In this video, I go through assembling and setting up the Toro Power Max HD 828 OAE Model 38838.
If you buy this from a dealer it will be set up and ready to blow snow but If you buy it online it will need assembly. If you buy it from a big box store it will be assembled but still needs to be set up.

Recommended: New! 28" (71 cm) Power Max HD 828 OAE 252cc Two-Stage Electric Start Gas Snow Blower (38838)MSRP: $1,299.00 USD This is the new "economy" version of the Power Max HD. It will handle just as deep of snow as the other HD models - it just won't do it as fast. I predict this will be one of Toro's most popular models! No, it does not have hand warmers and you can't install them. Will not clog on heavy, wet snow!

Nice looking machine. I have a John Deere TRX26 with rubber caterpillar style wheels. Bought it new about 32 years ago and still looks like new. Plows through some deep stuff and throws awesome. I added electric start to it about 15 years ago. Don’t see these track type throwers very often. Smartest decision I ever made getting the track style.

Paul? you need to adjust the shoot deflector cable at the shoot clip-holder, and the other end of the cable that goes to the quick-stick needs to go above the top horizontal handle instead of below it. I don't think it's the paint on the hinge
@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema 3 жыл бұрын
The shoot deflector cable is not the one I attached to the rod. The deflector cable runs down from the handle, is attached to the lower transmission case and then up to the deflector. It's mounted that way so it doesn't bind. It's the paint, I didn't move the camera but you can see the extra layer of paint on the hinge that will wear off soon.

Thanks for great videos! Big thumbs up!
@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema Жыл бұрын
You want the front housing resting on the skid shoes - not the scraper bar. Start with an 1/8 inch gap. Put the snow blower on a hard surface (cement). Put two paint sticks under each side of the scraper bar (1/8 inch) and then loosen the skid shoe bolts. Let the skid shoes drop down and tighten the bolts. Does the scraper still catch? If your driveway/sidewalk has a lot of cracks and bumps you may have to raise the gap to 1/4 inch. If you are clearing gravel that hasn't frozen yet you may have to increase the gap to 3/8 inch If you are clearing loose gravel (pea gravel) or a lot of turf (area for your dog) you may have to increase the gap to 1/2 inch In other words, keep increasing the gap between the scraper and the surface until it stops grabbing - most of the time. I have a few 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 thick 4X4 inch plywood scraps that I keep around to set the gap. What little snow you leave usually melts off the next sunny day.

Paul, I purchased a new 1030HD and during the first storm our road was very soft and the plow pile had a lot of rocks in it. Long story short, I had rocks get jammed in the impeller and the machine never cut off. Now when I try to use the machine, it barely throws snow. What do you think this may be? My thought is a new auger belt, but is this machine faulty for not cutting off under a jam like designed? Thanks!

You most likely stretched the belt. Watch this video on how adjust the impeller belt. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gJtzY8mAtMuZmYk.html If it won't tighten up then you'll need to have your Toro dealer install a new belt.

I don't recommend ANY 3x snowblower. They don't handle snow as well and have issues breaking the shear pins on the 3rd stage. If you regularly get 12 inches or more at a time I recommend the Toro 1428, Ariens Deluxe 28 SHO or an Ariens Pro 28. The larger engine make clearing snow a LOT faster.

I answered this question with the other question you asked. Adjust your skids shoes so that the gap under the scraper bar is 1/8 for hard pavement or 3/8 inch for gravel. That way it will clear the snow bout now catch on every crack in your cement. The little that's left will melt right off when the snow comes out.

Paul, one final question; is the HD 1030 a real jump in product quality and durability, or, is it just a close cousin to HD 828? Even a comparison link is appreciated if you know of one that compares

The easy way to explain: The 1030 is the same machine. It's just two inches wider and has a larger engine to compensate for the extra width. Same quality and durability. You have to go to the 1428 to get the commercial features.

@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema Жыл бұрын
If you are running dirt or mud through the chute you may want to clean it when you are done. Otherwise the snow doesn't stick inside these new chutes (or the older poly ones) Toro snowblowers have a lot more "throw" than older snowblowers and some of the other brands. Snow really doesn't stick in the chutes - even when the snow it really, really wet.

Trouble shooting my 828 OAE. The two stage cuts out. I changed the auger belt, not he issue. Worried it’s a “no shear pin” disengagement failure or possibly auger bearing failure. Can you explain where that “no shear pin” disengagement takes place? Thoughts?
@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema 6 ай бұрын
It doesn't disengage - either the belts slip or it kills the engine. Your problem may be as simple as a cable adjustment. When you engage the auger lever the spring at the end of the cable should expand about 3/8 of an inch.

@PaulSikkema Жыл бұрын
I understand your concern. With the exception of the EFI engines all the snowblower engines use a fixed jet carb and they just start better on full throttle. 5w30 is the correct oil. The chart on page 20 of your manual for this model can be little confusing. It shows that you can use 5w30 synthetic under all conditions and temperatures. If you are using regular oi you should use 10w30 for temperatures above freezing and 5w30 for temperatures below freezing. If you have an older snowblower and it does not show synthetic you can still use it instead of regular oil.

I also use it to melt the snow/ice out of the impeller when I'm done with the snowblower. Here's the bulb: amzn.to/3mNPgD6 and lamp fixture: amzn.to/34FEg4C

Hi Paul Is this the same setup for the toro powermax 824 OE? I went ahead and bought the toro over the ariens deluxe 24 and the comact24. I was lucky to get 10 %discount from the purchased price of $899(Home Depot) and I also bought the maintenance kit for $19.99 to get the one yr of extended warranty from toro for free.

The 1st speed forward is too fast on my Toro Powermax 928 BUT when I adjust it the tiny little bit it goes in reverse, at the LOWEST setting on 1st gear forward it's very-very-VERY close to reverse, the lowest setting I can get it's still too fast, I have to walk too fast to keep up, I either slip the traction lever or lower the throttle setting to slow it down, but lowering the throttle also effects the auger less power to pickup and throw the snow, My Ariens Deluxe 30 goes much slower in 1st gear forward. It's Toro's failure on the design and size of the friction wheel matched with the size of the belt pulleys and the engine RPM, Toro needs to go back to the design board and make the traction slower and the auger faster. The Ariens is perfect and is better engineered. Please don't take it personal Paul cause I have the highest respect for you and enjoy all your video's.

I understand your frustration with the Husqvarna. I've had four different models over the years and their biggest issue has always been the control cables. Ariens or Toro. That's really a tough choice. They are both the best snowblowers on the market today and you can't go wrong with either brand. So, here's a few things that may help you decide. 1. Go to both dealers and see which dealer you like best. Trusting the dealer goes a long way to being happy with your new snowblower. 2. Try out the controls. Watch my unboxing videos and I'll show you how to use the controls correctly. Some people like Toro's joystick and others like the simplicity of the Ariens crank. Move the snowblower around the sales floor to see how each one fits you. 3. Both handle heavy/wet snow and slush a LOT better than your ST224. Both will throw a LOT more snow than your ST224 and throw it a lot farther. To be very nit-picky - the Toro throws snow farther but the Ariens throws more snow. I can usually walk a little faster with the Ariens if I'm clearing 6-10 inches. 4. Both Toro and Ariens will last you many, many years.

Do you need to clean the snowblower after using it?
@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema Жыл бұрын
When you are done clearing snow run the front auger for a few seconds to clear out any snow remaining in the housing. If the snow is really sticky and there is a lot left in the housing - turn the engine off - remove the safety key - and then tip the snowblower up, back on the handles. Use your cleanout tool to remove most of the snow. Instead of cleaning out the snowblower by hand I use an infrared heat lamp. I shine it into the housing for a few hours and it melts all the snow and drys it out. www.farmandfleet.com/products/676976-woods-farm-utility-brooder-lamp.html. www.farmandfleet.com/products/714269-feit-electric-250-watt-br40-red-heat-lamp.html

still shopping... What does company recommend for gas? ethanol or non? high test or regular? Does this require chains on tires for heavy snow storm or is it heavy enough? What is correct tire pressure?
@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema Жыл бұрын
All new engines are rated for 87 octane E10 fuel. DO NOT USE E15 FUEL! Todays snowblowers all use a high traction snow tire so you don't need chains. This snowblower has all the weight balanced over the wheels so it has plenty of traction. The correct tire pressure is listed in your operator's manual. The manual either comes in a plastic bag hanging on the new machines or Toro specifically has a QR code on the nameplate at the back of the transmission. Scan that code with your phone and it gives you a link to the manual.

Tes, you will have to check with your dealer to see if the alternator on your model can handle the extra current. Most snowblower engines that only have lights have small alternators. They are not capable of handling the extra current load of handwarmers.

Paul, I am in the market for a new blower and your articles and videos are a huge help, thank you! Should I be concerned about Toro and others being made in China? with the Corona virus supply chain disruptions and the trade hostilities between the US and China I wonder about parts availablility going forward? I know you recommed Toro but is it safer to get a US made machine like Troy Bilt?
@PaulSikkema
@PaulSikkema 3 жыл бұрын
Toro is made in Bloomington, MN. Ariens is made in Brillion, Wisconsin. Troy-Bilt, Cub Cadet, Craftsman are made in Ohio. The confusion may be that ALL snowblower engines are made overseas - most of them in China. These engines are generally shipped months in advance so there is no shortages at this time. We did have an issue with engine last summer (2019) because the Port of Los Angeles got behind but that was quickly fixed by rerouting the container ships to other ports of entry - like New Orleans.

If you want to stick with Ariens I highly recommend the Deluxe 30 or Deluxe 30 EFI. You'll get done a lot faster and can clear the long part in just two round trips. If you get a lot of snow consider the Platinum 30. It will clear 15 inches or more as fast as you can walk.

I've been reviewing Ariens for over 10 years and I've only once broken a shear pin. And that was because I stuck the snowblower in a chain-link fence...That one fell out. I'd go with the 1030. It's a little wider so it will get the job done just a little faster, it has the same power to width ratio as the 928, and it has heated handgrips!

I've never thought about having a brake on the tranny. Probably because if the slope is steep enough that it would slide that the slope is too steep to walk on. That said, I'll mention it to the snowblower engineers next time I see them. Snowblowers with hydrostatic transmissions or tracks don't need the brake. The only brake they have is on the impeller/auger so it stops right away - for safety.
