Toro Timecutter Zero Turn No Start Issue Fixed By Bypassing The Park Brake

In this video I'll be showing you how to get your Toro mower back up and running IF your No Start Issue is caused by the electronic park brake module. I'll be showing you how to bypass the system by jumping the micro switch connectors and removing the park brake assembly.
Disclaimer: This is NOT a permanent solution. It is meant to get your machine back up and running until the brake module is replaced. Also by doing this procedure you are tricking the brake module to register that the park brake is still ON. Your mower will no longer have a functioning parking brake system and if machine is left on a steep incline or uneven terrain there is a possibility that it can start rolling away so you are doing this modification bypass at YOUR OWN RISK.

Bought a toro 42 inch timecutter about 3 years ago. Need to replace the battery but otherwise runs good. Keep these timecutter videos coming my friend. Videos are well done and very informative. No doubt in the future I'll need them. Thanks for sharing with us.

Your testing process was grate, even though my mower was a slightly different model the shorting system you used with colour wires worked. Without that I could have spent hours looking for the problem. Many thanks.

Want to Thank You for this video., iOn my Toro Timecutter 5020, replaced the soleniod, relay, battery and starter. Nothing. Even de-attached the blade bed from the mower to see if there was anything was blocking the blades from turning, Saw your video and after following the steps, mower cranked right up! Thanks again!

I bought my TORO 42" Zero Tuen Time Cutter last year 2022...within one lawn cutting, the brake module went bad, yeah warrantee but still $60 transportation to the shop and home fee! The shop guys said these have been a problem for years...and pricey if out of warranty! I always bypass the seat safety switches, now I may do the same to the steering lever safety switches too - don't need no stinking parking brakes. This machine was built to Go - Go - Go! I did the same to a reverse button on my old Scot mower - safeties are for kids!

Yes they had problems with those brake modules since day one, all the way back to like 2013 or 14.

Yes, it's the fastest and cheapest way get your machine back up and running. Ordering parts nowadays it takes forever.

Yes they do drain the battery, when I winterize them for the customer, I unhook the battery, and put chucks under one wheel, and show the customer what I did.

@@knighthawk86855 When I turn the ignition on for my toro timecutter the park break engages really slow and weak. When I take it out of park it disengages normal. Should like a brake issue to you?

@@bigal2681 First clean the area around both brakes make sure there is no twigs, grass clippings, keeping it from moving, 2nd make sure you have a full charge on the battery, 3rd oil/grease the pivot points on the brake interlock, 4th if the first 3 things don't fix it, replace the black box, ie the module.

Hey, gonna try this, if it doesn't work, I need to get fuel solenoid off, can't really figure out what tool to use or if there are tork screws plus a 1/2 inch thin filed wrench?

What is the machine currently doing when you try to start it. If you are talking about the fuel shut off solenoid, yes some can be removed with thin wrench and some you can remove the whole bowl from the carburetor.

So how do you stop your mower on a slight incline without it rolling away? You should leave the brake linkage and connect a cable to it so that you still have a parking brake!

I have jumpered all my switches and now my mower starts and moves perfectly. Problem I'm having is when I try to switch on the mower blades. That's when it dies on me. I didn't remove my brake levers like you did, just bypassed with jumpers. Will those arms still being attached cause the mower to die when you pull the yellow lever to start the blades?

No, if you jumped the control levers you should be good. It may be your seat switch. If it's jumped too, just plug it back and see if that works.

I have a Toro zero turn with no crank no start issue. I have replaced all electrical components (starter, solenoid, starter switch, PTO switch, ignition switch, battery etc. I can now crank and start mower with NOCO starter but not with out it. VERY STRANGE.. thoughts?

Possibly needs valve adjustment or may have a broken compression release on the camshaft and that's why it needs more power to crank engine pass compression stroke.

Thanks for the clear explanation! So if I jumped 12V straight to the starter, I've not just bypassed the solenoid, I've bypassed ALL the safety switches? I've replaced my starter, but still, it moves 1/4" and stops. The flywheel turns by hand and spins freely with plugs out. What else could be keeping the flywheel from engaging with the starter? It had been working 2 days earlier

Where is the compression release mechanism, and how would that only allow the starter gear to barely move and not engage with the flywheel?

@@johns1577 unfortunately it's on the crankshaft and you have to disassemble engine. One way to know for sure as this happened to mine. Remove air filter and using your hand or flexible rubber or plastic cover air breather intake stopping free flow of air and see if it spins easier . You may even get it to start like this but it's just a temporary fix.

Im not hearing my clutch engage or disengage. Nor am i hearing the sound from the brake module working. Makes me think the clutch is stuck on ? Will the brake mechanisms work and make that sound if the clutch is stuck engaged? That would explain why i hear neither one?

The pto switch goes through the seat safety switch so you need to be sitting on the mower to test the clutch. The brake module will not interfere so it as long as you are sitting on the mower you should be able to turn ignition ON without starting the mower and hear the clutch engage when you pull on the pto switch.

@@mr_fixit I noticed right off the bat that my switch felt kinda crunchy when turned . So I replaced that first and I'm back working. I thought maybe the break module because I have never wore a switch out that quickly. Thanks for the great videos.

Mine still won’t turn over after doing that. Is there a certain type of wire needed? I just used 14 ga. Does it need to be solid wire?

No that should work so there is probably something else going on. Is the mower cranking at all?

@@mr_fixit it does if I Hotwire by connecting the solenoid terminals together. But it still won’t turn over. Seems like no fuel is getting to it. I didn’t totally remove the breaks yet though. Is that a must before it will start??

@@TeamBazz if you bypassed the switches on the control levers and still no crank then there is another issue. And since you mentioned that by jumping the solenoid you can get it to crank, then the solenoid may be bad as well. Definitely also pull the fuel line from the fuel pump to see if you are getting fuel and also check for spark.

AT THIS TIME I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. I ALREADY DID THE SAME AS YOU. BUT THE AUTOMATIC BRAKE CONTINUES TO WORK AND DO NOT LET THE ENGINE START. I HAVE TO GIVE THE BRAKE A MANUAL TURN TO START THE MACHINE. TIP IN CASE THE SAME IS HAPPENING TO YOU. HOW TO DISCONNECT THE AUTOMATIC BRAKE?

If you jumped the handle bars and brake is disconnected but still have the issue then you need to replace it. I never had one that did that after the bypass but still that is a temporary fix. I do recommend to replace the brake module sooner than later. Hope this helps and thank you for watching.

Every machine is different it also depends on how you take care of it and if it's out in the element or it gets covered after use. I remember few years ago when they first came out with these electronic park brake modules that alot of them developed problems within a year.

@@mr_fixit I just bought one a week ago with the floating seat it cuts really good and the floating seat really took the bumps out my back I got a bad back and that's why I bought the my ride how do you adjust the steering on it

@@wadebarnes6720 there is a nut at each transmission where the rod connects, that's the neutral set screw.

Most likely the brake module has gone bad. Check out one of my other videos, you can bypass it temporarily (or permanently at your own risk) if you need to be able to use the mower.

Sounds like you either have drive belt issue or hydro issue. If both transmission move at about same speed start with the drive belt.

my toro ss 5000 won’t start. All it does is click, I already replaced the solenoid and tried this and nothing 😢

You will have to do some more diagnostics to see where is the slicking coming from to determine where you have a short or failed part.

So you had a dead $3 switch and you didn't want to fix it. Is that pretty much What's going on here? Because the modules fine if you're bypassing the switches and then it works.

No, there was a short in the circuit for the safety switches inside the module so module needed replacing and that's why I stated in the description that this is a temporary fix until the module is replaced.

Assuming all your safety switches work properly then you will not have spark if your coil is dead or the air gap is not set properly.

In this video I'm showing the scenario when mower is not doing anything. If the mower is cranking over and doesn't want to start then yes, one of the possible causes could be the carb but not in this case. I can possibly make a video showing all the different no start causes.
