Can you add a dethatcher to a Toro Timemaster 30”? Well we find out and also do a deep dive into functionality to see if what we did actually works! Follow along and there is a DIY How To included. The dethatcher on the 30” Toro Timemaster actually performs fairly well. Watch to see the results for yourself to see if this is a DIY project you should tackle for yourself!

Informative video. Note for all: @01:27, it would have been safer to do the tilt with the fuel cap on to avoid spillage.

Would be hard to show the trapped air on a video if the cap was on. But in general yeah I agree.

Thanks for answering a long standing question for me. I own the same mower in your demonstration, and have been deliberating this for a while. Look like it’s a go.

After you do a “real” or through dethatch, it works well in a maintenance or maintaining low levels of thatch. If you have severe thatch, it really isn’t the proper tool for the job. For a $20 purchase and it not adding any more time to mow the lawn. It has its place and it is what it is. Cheers from the Bulldog 🍻

I fit that JD dethatcher on my Honda HRX by adding shoulder bolts exactly like the front wheel bolts on it, accept half an inch longer and added a bronze bushing from Lowes, a couple bolts and washers adjusted the dethatcher frame to toe in slightly and it goes on easily and works very well! Thank you!

Awesome farm-engineering! Yeah, it’s not going to be the end-all attachment. But in my opinion it has earned it’s place in my tool box. For the weekly “maintenance” and for how simple it is it’s a fine modification. Cheers from the Bulldog 🍻

Great video. I found one of these 2nd hand (pretty rare I guess over here in the UK). I don't want the hassle of hiring a comnercial dethatcher, or walking miles behind a tiny domestic one. This might solve the problem. Will be trying it soon..

Hey, guess what...there's a company called Red Magic that makes one of these dethatcher spring-tine units specifically for the 30" Toro Timemaster, Turfmaster & Exmark units. Maybe you gave them an idea?!!! 😁

I had to take a look at them. After I fell off my chair for the price of $280 (or 4 easy payments of $70). I did see they said it would work on the Timemaster but only shown the Exmark for the pictures. I would like to see how the front adjustable axel on the Timemaster would interfere with their mounting plate. I think it is great the aftermarket has made a plug-n-play kit for these mowers. I would have like to see it a double row like the one I used. That would double the dethatching rate of probably 4” on the Red Magic unit to what my cobbled together unit has of roughly 2”. Happy to see the aftermarket step it up though!! Thanks for the FYI!! 🍻

I need something with a bagger. I have a 3pt CMP dethatcher for my 1025R but I really need to rack after using it... which is a lot of work. And a 30" like yours would be much quicker than a 21", have to look into one.

I do like a “little” exercise and if I can accomplish a chore while I exercise. Well that’s just a win-win. But my old 21” just made everything longer than it needed to be. The Timemaster is a light duty machine. Light enough my wife is comfortable operating it. But at 30” big enough to actually make forward progress. The tine Dethatcher really opened up the versatility!

What's the length of the dethatcher from john Deere since you are using a 30 inch toro timemaster?
@BulldogTractor
@BulldogTractor 2 жыл бұрын
I picked the Dethatcher up used, on one of those local sell-it-yourself sites. So I honestly don’t know much about it, and for the life of me, i can’t find any identifiable product numbers. I measured the total tine width and find it to be approximately 20”.

I purchased it used off a local on-line webpage. Unfortunately the Dethatcher has no identification or part numbers. There is a John Deere sticker, and i assume it was off one of their 21” walk behind mowers?

Why would you mulch, then bag? Why not just bag the first time? By mulching first I would think you are forcing cut grass down into the lawn instead of putting it directly into the bag. Even on a second bagging pass after mulching, there's going to be some grass that's now too deep in the lawn to all come up. It makes the dethatch pass look a bit better than it really was because it's getting up some of that mulched grass from your first pass. I also wish you would have shown some footage of what the dethatcher pulled up without the blades running on the mower to get a better idea of exactly how much it's pulling up as you go. Showing us what's in the bag gives us no clue. We don't know how much area you covered to collect that much debris. But I think we get your point that it is a worthwhile thig to do. Even if it is not as thorough as a power rake or scarifier it seems like a much quicker method. Maybe just do it a little more often than power raking. As a Timemaster owner, I thank you for pointing this out to us.

Why did i do, what i did? I dunno i guess? Just felt this approach was the most unbiased approach. I didn’t visually flag or fence off the area for the camera. i did explain in the video the exact same area was used for all 3 cuts. I wasn’t really trying to get scientific, rather one day i just felt like i wanted a dethatcher and Toro refuses to make one for these light duty residential walk behind lawn mowers. So i found a used attachment (that has zero part identification numbers) did some metal fabrication and made it work. My intention was to show a dethatcher on a Timemaster. As a bonus, I tried to show my real world results in a way that made sense to me at the time. I thought and still feel that showing the debris in the bag is a valid measurement. By the third cut of the same area, and being previously bagged. The third cut and final bag should have very little to no extra clippings other than what the dethatcher kicked up. Agree to disagree. Maybe next year I’ll incorporate some of the comments and try to make a better video? 🍻 Cheers for viewing, and thanks for the comment. -Bulldog

@@BulldogTractor I guess the reason I wish you did some dethatching without the blade running was so I could compare it to what my Greenworks electric dethatcher pulls up. Not criticizing your work, just asking some questions..
@BulldogTractor
@BulldogTractor 2 жыл бұрын
@@mellowjammer Oh, I now I understand. I now can see where the confusion is. I own a corded power tool, the Sunjoe AJ801E which would be a fair comparison to the Greenworks corded dethatcher/ power rake. However trying to compare the Greenworks/Sunjoe Vs. front mount tine Dethatcher would be a slaughterhouse. The dedicated type power rakes are great at performing their sole purpose. My Frankenstein version of a front mount spring tine Dethatcher is more for “maintenance” or every day use. It really doesn’t add any additional time other than the time to perform regular mowing. It does however do light scarification to help with weekly maintenance. The comparison between a dedicated Dethatcher to the Toro Timemaster front mount spring tine Dethatcher was something i knew, but held bias against. I should have caught that, and addressed it but it slipped by me. That is actually a good video idea for a follow up to this video. It will be a runaway blowout, but would definitely show the comparison between a daily maintenance tool and a dedicated purpose built tool. Gimme a couple days and I’ll make a follow up to this one. Cheers for the comments and the video idea 🍻 -Bulldog

Checking the oil could be a good idea. Then again this mower is no good. I owned one, it left the biggest mess I have ever seen. Great heaps of chewed up grass everywhere. One only way to stop this was to leave the cut grass very high, this meant I had to return quickly to cut it again. My advice get a real mower.

This is also my second Timemaster. Bought my first one in 2015 with the small motor. This second Timemaster with the larger motor works just fine for me. As I’ve owned these specific mowers for around 7 years, I guess my experience is different than yours. I’m wondering if yours is the smaller motor? As that could be the difference in our experiences. Cheers 🍻
