About 10 years ago, when the voltage regulator on the factory 110 amp alternator on my 03 Super Duty died, I replaced it with the DC Power 270 amp unit. This thing has been a champ and still keeps all the electronics , batteries, and aftermarket lights happy.

There's a much better argument for using two factory alternators than cool factor, although I understand the cool factor. The alternator case has a finite heat dissipation, regardless how much current the internals are capable of creating, because the thermal mass of the high output unit is no more (appreciably) than the standard factory unit. Thus, if you're in a situation where you have a sustained current demand of over 200 amps, each of the smaller alternators will be operating at a much lower heat load, which increases their efficiency. And I'm glad to see DC sent you a 270 instead of a 320, 390 or 490 amp unit. I never recommend more than a 270 amp alternator to my customers because efficiency gets pretty nasty when you're generating more than 300 amps in that standard sized automotive alternator chassis. Two hundred seventy amps seems to be about the limit for these chassis in terms of heat dissipation and efficiency when loaded. Last, get some fusing on those additional power wires. It's rare that an alternator fails to high voltage but it can happen and when it does, if there's no fusing the damage can be catastrophic. Many years ago I melted down my entire audio system because I didn't have the wire feeding it fused, when the alternator failed and dumped ~60 volts into my electrical system. Thankfully, the factory side of my electrical did have a fuse so it saved me surely totaling my truck with that mishap.
@animefreak5757

I've never heard of a fuse that blows based on voltage, only on current. Happen to have a link to one? It'd be a interesting read for me.
@BrandonBuckaudioanarchy
@BrandonBuckaudioanarchy 3 ай бұрын
I never suggested fuses blow based on voltage. But I will say, nor do they blow based on current. Fuses are thermal devices. They blow based on temperature and their alloy, cross sectional area and length are "tuned" to melt at a temperature that would be created by a relatively closely approximated amount of current. But with that said, they do not know what that current is just like they don't know what the voltage is. And they don't need to. Next let's examine Ohm's Law where it relates to a 12 volt electrical system. If we have a 200 amp fuse on a 12 volt circuit that circuit has a more or less constant amount of resistance. So if we raise voltage, current must necessarily also rise because resistance is fixed. And when that happens, fuses heat up and do their thing. For the maths we can assume that if we're flowing 160 amps through a circuit fused at 200 amps (20% headroom) and voltage begins to rise.... it only needs to rise to ~18 volts to reach 200 amps. Theoretically, at the 55 odd volts I measured coming out of my alternator when it failed the current flowing through the factory installed fuse was something on the order of 600 amps and last I checked, it doesn't take anywhere near 600 amps to open a 200 amp fuse. I'll also add that, in a catastrophic even like that all it takes is for one device in the vehicle to fail to a dead short in order to cause an insanely high inrush of current. And that inrush will last until something opens, whether it be a fuse or the dead short failed device. tl;dr Because Ohm's Law is real.
@animefreak5757
@animefreak5757 3 ай бұрын
@@BrandonBuckaudioanarchy the bit where i was confused was where a fuse would protect your system from the alternator outputting 60 volts. Most electronics aren't a purely resistive load, and applying 5x the rated voltage is going to fry them instantly unless they have inbuilt protection for overvoltage. A fuse won't blow in time to stop that, even if the device does pull enough current to blow it.
@BrandonBuckaudioanarchy
@BrandonBuckaudioanarchy 3 ай бұрын
I didn't suggest a fuse will protect your electronics in this scenario. Fuses don't exist to protect electronics from damage. They exist to protect the occupants of the vehicle/building from burning to death in a fire. Please address the things I actually say. Thanks.

That's fantastic. I did a similar dual battery system to a 93 k2500 after I changed to dual electric fans, added a 60" bar light, pod lights, electric brake booster, and converted to direct port injection and coil packs. The load was way too much for stock on my truck, so i added a second battery and had a 105amp rebuilt to 180amp. I will remember this company for when i need to replace the alternator.

For hurricane preparedness, wouldn't it be much easier to have a whole house automatic standby generator installed? You can get natural gas or propane. Natural gas if you have it, the generator would not run out of fuel, and you wouldn't have to pick and choose which circuits you want to connect.

@SeanBZA
@SeanBZA 3 ай бұрын
No varnish there, those are just plain nichrome strip elements, and the smoke is the burning off of all the dust and oil vapour that has been deposited from being in a garage where this is in the air, and where you also breathe it as well. Got a cheaper one, one setting non adjustable, and it too will smoke after 10 seconds of use, which is the duty cycle to test a battery, to emulate a typical starter load and time.

I understand your thought process with what you did Ray. Nice setup. I went a different route since I did work for a Kubota diesel dealer and generator manufacturer. Got the components and assembled a 7 KW Kubota D905/Stamford Newage brushless alternator, a 60 gallon tank, and manual transfer switch for 4K a couple of days after Hurricane Frances in '04. Back fed through the dryer after removing the meter(sorry FPL) until I had time to wire in the transfer switch. Jeanne hit a month later, then Wilma in '05. It handled my small house including the HVAC system if I managed the load by not running the range at the same time. It burned 1/2 gallon an hour at full load and my customers were giving me fuel from their boats. I was without FPL for 10, 14, and 12 days during that time after the hurricanes. Two nights of sweating and no lights and refrigeration after Frances were enough for me.

The suppliers of the _super_ alternator saved you a can of brake clean because their alternator is already supplied _nice and _*_shiny!_* 👍👍 I don't know if you have thought about this but since this setup is so important for your _hurricane emergency power_ it might pay to keep a spare serpentine belt sitting at home so if this one breaks your _emergency power_ also won't be down for long unlike the grid. With the _super_ alternator installed you'll now have a mobile power source for a welding unit if the inverters can handle the draw. Cool eh! 😎 *Thank You* for the video.

Yep, a pretty cool addition. Upsize all your DC power cables and connectors + and - for the new max load and add the appropriate fusing. You have a pretty slick set up.
