Today we are going over the full cost break down of our solar power system and the time it will take to recoup our investment costs. If you are interested in the build of our system you can find numerous videos documenting the entire solar power system build in this playlist:

We are a couple who are building our own home from the ground up in the mountains of West Virginia. After living near the city our entire lives we finally decided to sell it all, pack up our 3 kids and live in an RV on our 73 acres while building our own debt free, off-grid house and learning to live a more self-reliant life.
Our house build is documented entirely on our main channel "Wild Wonderful Off-Grid" and our family life vlogs can be found on our secondary channel "Wild Wonderful After Show"

So you are in it for about $15K for a total off grid home. 5 year pay off... and it will last for years! I find it interesting how some people look at the payoff on solar. Maybe a $20K system, and they look at the payoff that may be 20 years. And they think it's not a good investment. But they will buy a $50K pickup that just sits and loses money over a 5 - 7 year period and they think that is just fine. Can't light your house with the pickup.... I think what you two are doing is wonderful! A great investment.

I have worked with several electricians and electrical contractors. I can tell you that Josh is up there with the most qualified, and professional electricians in the world. His system design is professional and elegant. It speaks to a highly organized mind. From me, that is high praise. So many people hit a problem with the attitude that I can do it, but then get bogged down trying to perform the work. Hit and miss is not the way to take care of a problem. In the installation of the original system, you made the statement that you were planning on expanding it. You planned for it and laid the work out so that you could do just that. Your expansion recently covered in several videos demonstrated that you had planned out the expansion and that you had done your homework on the products that you would use, and the manner in which they would best serve your needs. Well done! Good job standing for your husband Erin. Great Job being the man worthy of that Josh!

When we looked into having ours installed, it was about double the cost of the components. So the $15k in equipment I bought would have been a 30k bill had I let someone else install it. I did it myself and I can tell you it is easier than you may think. Ours is just a 3.3kW system with 16-305 ah AGM batteries. I did mine in 2014 and it would be much less today.
@gardengatesopen
@gardengatesopen 3 жыл бұрын
I was wondering this same thing. How many man hours would be needed? Of coarse, this depends on the situation. But what DOES a qualified electrician charge for such a job? Is it by the hour? Or by the job? Just for grins, if it's hourly, how much does a qualified electrician cost per hour these days? I also wonder how many hours the family put into that entire project! There were times kid labor was used - and that definitely counts too!!! Good video y'all ❤ I'm no where near an electrician's level, and I understood every word. Thanks for all your info ❤❤❤

My wife and I are in our mid-sixties and are self-building a modest ICF home on a small island off the coast of B.C. in Canada. I watch every episode of your fantastic journey and always finish each one with a smile and a feeling of gratitude that I learned something. Usually, what I learn has more to do with heart and soul, not so much 2x4's and solar panels. The value of what you are giving to each other, your kids and to your viewers is impossible to measure. Keep on doing what you do best - forge ahead with energy and passion. Don't pay attention to any negative comments. They are saying more about the person who wrote them than they are about you. Great rundown of costs, I was very interested in hearing about some of the other material costs and sourcing. Not that I think you should have included it but a large missing line item here is the labor costs for all of these things for anyone that is not able to diy. I think of that all the time with my current house build. The more I do myself, the lower the cost. The per hour rate of an electrician comparable to Josh is definitely not cheap. Thanks for sitting down and walking us through these numbers.

@@michaelcoles6140 you can get cheap land north and west. Tax system changes could resolve normal wood price issues, and of course compare population density in Europe and the length of time EU citizens have been working that land; USA is pretty much empty..........

With the size of the panel array and it being in the pasture have you thought of turning it into a rain catchment for animal water? Due to the gaps between the panels you would need a sheet or tarp under to catch the water and direct down to the gutter and a in ground tank for holding would then let you run a pipe down hill to a water tank for the animals.

@TheUserid82
@TheUserid82 3 жыл бұрын
@@laurieg673 How would it direct the water to the gutter if it is flapping in the wind? It is a tried setup often hidden under things like decks where water runs between the boards just in this case secured to the top and bottom of the frame to catch the water running off each panel.

I live in Texas, we had 21 inches of snow and got down to minus 3 degrees Fahrenheit. I built my home for livability during this type situation. I have a 250 gallon propane tank with gas logs, gas cook stove, and heaters in all bathrooms. I also have a manual disconnect on my house where I can hook up my Honda EU 7000 generator to my home for lights, fridge and deep freezers. We made it just fine. I keep 80 gallons of non ethanol gas with Stabil fuel stabilizer in it. I fill up in October each year and if I don't use the gas during the winter I use it in my mowers mowing 8 acres of yard each spring. Most homeowners sadlly failed to plan for this type situation. We were unable to get out of our house for 8 days since we live off the main roads but made it just fine because of proper planning. Love your guys channels. Been with you since month one.
