PPM the EASY WAY! I am breaking this subject down, recommending 0 - 300 PPM giving examples depending on root size, growth attributes & seasons. Trust me, I know how overwhelming it can be to delve into the subject of how much fertilizer we should apply to our orchids when we start dosing our nutrient solution using PPM. Orchid Care for Beginners
Know that, in this video, I speak of 0 PPM of fertilizer. Please know that, it is important for you to measure how many PPM your water has before you add any fertilizer. This video only addresses fertilizers with Calcium and Magnesium as part of their composition. For additional information about supplementation, please refer to this playlist: cutt.ly/iQGZImk

Thank you Nina.I clearly understood the meaning Now my next concern is the gadget.Any good brand?By seeking advice from Adyasha Orchid Diaries I bought a humidifier.Now I know how to measure humidity and ensure optimum humidity for my phalaenopsis orchids in summer.In fact,even before the parts per million precious video,I was thinking of asking you the what and how of parts per million.But, I was too shy to ask you.Reason,I thought everybody except me know the what and how of ppm.Without knowing the stages of ppm, I was simply fertilising my orchids and a lot of burnt roots With the right amount of fertilisation, it is very nice to see orchid roots running Criss cross.So many many thanks for that highly educative video of ppm.I will listen and listen to that video like a little child singing that childhood song rain rain go away,come again another day,little'Katherine' wants to play.Katherine is my grand child.So zero ppm, 100 ppm,160ppm and 300 ppm.Now the ppm instrument. I will find it.I haven't seen that instrument at all.Thanks a lot Nina.

HI Jose! 🤗💐 I am so glad that I could explain the PPM without making a mess of it! 😅 For a TDS meter, and pH meter, I would not buy anything expensive... Search TDS meter or Total Dissolved Solids Meter in google, and many times you will find the pH meter on that search as well, sometimes they come as a pair in the page, because they go kind of hand in hand. If you find something between $15 and $20 that is a very good quality gadget for the purposes of our orchids. It is not necessary to by an expensive brand. I am going to leave you a link for the one I have... but you can see other brands as suggested as an example EU / Uk - amzn.to/3tqjFM8 this will give you several options. If you need any further help, let me know. The right fertilization does show results very quickly and you are right... the criss crossing of roots is a beautiful sight. 🤩🌸

Good morning! Long time no see :) Thought I'd have more time on vacation, but visitations made me skip on videos completely. But I'm back! On the weekend I'll do some catchup :) This is interesting video. There's one thing I've been thinking about since I switched from pots to jars (so far I didn't open my orchids for 2 months already, I need to change the water, but they exploded in growth and I didn't want to disturb them :) ), because the ppm thing is usually for pots, where you provide it in certain intervals depending on how fast the plants drink it/how fast it evaporates. And you need flushing to remove the excess salts. But with jars and "recycled water" basically I started thinking about "how fast will they eat the nutrients in let's say 200ppm water?" Why I say 200ppm, because that's what I used for my Vanilla more than 5 months ago (our tap water actually, it was 180ppm back then, just let to sit 24 hours) at this point and it's still growing well, but it's starting to slow down a bit (not sure if it's due to lower light or the nutrients running out though). I find that in drier environment (like in my pots), the roots get way more sensitive to salts in water, because due to dry air, they tend to dry up on the roots at the top of the pots, I don't see that issue in the high humidity jars. At this point my other 2 in jars got 150ppm those 2 months ago and it seems like it was more than enough so far, cause there is now a small bit of algae happening (so I'm guessing some excess is there, but roots are not burning). I need to do more testing about this. But this video is a good general starting point :) I came to the same conclusion about connection to size of the roots. Anyway, just some random thoughts, take care!

Hey!! 🌸🥷🏼SnowDragonka San!! 🏖⛱⛵️🍹🥰🙌🏼💐 I was thinking of you on a lilo with Audrey Hepburn shades on, one had in crystal clear waters being served cocktails!! So glad to see you back and... goodness me, no videos while on vacation!! I wouldn't! 😅 fully agree with roots that are exposed to more air! Too easy to do damage there, as opposed to those that are within a constantly moist environment! The thought of algae developing is interesting... mmhh! And, thank you for sharing the sentiment on the size of the roots! 🙌🏼👍🏼 Love to read your random thoughts... had a piece of chocolate to help me digest your vast knowledge 😅 hope that you are doing well, that you had a wonderful vacation and thank you so much for watching, 🌸🥷🏼 have a wonderful evening 🥰🌸

Interesting topic! I learned from Fred Clark about how he fertilize his plants… of course it is very different from what you do. And it is super simple so I can easy do so. He taught me to continuously fertilize with 100 ppm. Plants which needs daily and more fertilizer naturally need to be watered often so they get more food naturally he said. So it’s kinda similar idea with you watering twice to give 320…

Hi Yoshi 🤗💐 If I had a greenhouse with controlled environment, then, that is what I would do as well. Turns out, in my conditions I have to help some orchids out with more based on the weather conditions, and then help them out during the colder months when in active growth, but with less. But, I would do exactly the same if my conditions were steady and controlled. Maybe I would double it for the big cattleyas, even in steady conditions, but that is hypothetical for me 😅 thank you so much for watching, Yoshi! 😊🌸

@@NinjaOrchids interesting nonetheless… I had heater issue last year… almost burned the house due to electric problems 😅 this year, my greenhouse temperature would be “controlled” since I fixed it and the temperature really holds what i set up. I am interested in seeing how cooler dryer resting ones and also constant growing ones do in my greenhouse this year.

Hi,Nina parts per million was a term which I could not understand at all until this lucid,educational video with plenty of examples. Again a doubt is there in my mind.How will we measure say 100 parts per million of TDS ? This video is a pointer to the mistake orchid gardeners commit by over fertilisation.Happy Gardening.
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jose 🤩💐 parts per million is the terminology for the total measured amount of Total Dissolved Solids. So, if you have your Total Dissolved Solids meter (the gadget on the thumbnail or any gadget that measures Total Dissolved Solids = TDS meter) and stick it into any water or liquid, it will tell you how many Parts Per Million are in your water. So... let's say you take a glass of water with tap water in it, and stick the TDS meter in it, it will show a number on the display.... maybe 70 or 150, whatever the number, THAT number is how many Parts Per Million is in your tap water. It will not tell you what exactly is in your tap water, but shows you how much of 'something' is in your water. So, if you then add x amount of your fertilizer, and stick the TDS meter into the tap water, you will see the Parts Per Million number go up... lets say, after you added your dose of fertilizer, you Parts Per Million number now says 500 on your TDS meter, then, you subtract what you had before you added the fertilizer from the total, and you know how many Parts Per Million you are giving your orchids. Example: Tap Water = 100 Parts Per Million + Fertilizer dose brings your water to 500 Parts Per Million - The 100 Parts Per Million the tap water already had before you added fertilizer = 400 Parts Per Million of actual fertilizer in the water Does this answer your question? Let me know, Jose! I would be more than happy to elaborate if I did not answer your question adequately! Thank you for your time watching and I hope that you had a great day 👍🏼🌸

🦒👌💃🎠!!! Great referance vídeo, great thorough information. It made me think of my Jimeney cricket. I have to give this idea some further thought but, in view of the crested bloom and aborted ones I wonder if I am giving too much fertilizer (300 while in active growth) to her needs 🤔 Being a vigorous orchid from the start she might not need so much which may seem its contradictory but isn't ... she is just productive enough with sugars from the sun light and environment... Also, considering it's a Brassavola cross and roots not really that thick I even wonder if Brassavolas in general will do better with intermediate levels all together 🤔 I am going to experiment that change, thanks for making me think !!! Hope you will have a very pleasant day, everything according to your wishes, vecina favorita ❤️😍🤗

FFF 🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰🤩💐 hello, meine liebe Freundin! I was starting to respond to comments and the garden centre called that they had unloaded my pots... I did not waste any time to go and get them. Well, I had to wait for King to sniff everything along the way, but, I did not want to wait another day, just in case someone came and said they would pay for all of them then and there (which happened some years ago, and the garden centre had sold my order because I did not come quick enough 😅 back then, I even offered to pay for my order in advance so that they knew I wanted that quantity and they said it would not be necessary, but, then another customer came along and they sold my order to them 🤦🏼‍♀️😅... today, I was not going to let that happen!) Your Jimeney Cricket is a mystery! I would give that one 300ppm as well, because of it's vigor, and it is in a pot. But... you are right about Brassavola roots, they behave different when they get a wet dry cycle as opposed to being in a constantly moist environment. But... you do not have any root burn, all your roots are healthy, so... there is that to consider as well. Seeing as we are coming into colder months, it won't hurt to drop the ppm and see if that makes a change. Will you also consider this orchid to be where your new growlight is? I hope that year 3 an awesome spectacle of blooms awaits 🙌🏼🤞🏼 thank you so very much for watching and your kind feedback! I did not get any filming done, but I got my pots,... so... it was a good day! Now, to finish the rest of the housekeeping here, and then Xyliano time 💆🏼‍♀️ the dogs are already doing stupid stuff under the desk, right at my feet! There is so much space outside on the patio, but... nope... right at my feet, playing the seal game 🦭🦭 I think King sees Baloo as one big stuffed animal 😆 have a beautiful evening, amiga!! ❤️🌸

@@NinjaOrchids How wonderful that you have your pots, at last !!!! You were wise to get them straight away. Having two young dogs is a totally different game... I remember when both Rufus and Phoenix were younger and their favourite game was rolling around nibbling eachother's throat... Oh I miss those days. Now that Phoenix is by herself everything is a lot quieter. Olivia is always following her as if she was a dog herself🤣. It is funny to see Phoenix tagging along my husband in the garden and Olivia right behind them as well... My J.cricket likes high light, even direct morning sun. I still don't know which orchids are going under the lights. I will see the best way when I am organizing things. Everything is different from previous years as several high light lovers went into larger pots. However if not under the lights JC will be right at the front row on the window sill. Hi Jean 🤩💐 welcome!! Really appreciate you being here, and as it is the first time that I see you in my comments, WELCOME! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and leaving me your feedback. The fertilizer quantity sounds ok to me.... it all depends, of course, as to what fertilizer you are using and at what point in the orchids' grow cycles, but... may I ask what media you are using? Do you grow in inorganic or organic? It would be interesting to know, because there could be other reasons, apart from fertilizing outside of the grow cycle of the orchids, why your media is showing left over salts, despite your flushing. Let me know, and maybe I can give you some other pointers 🤗 thank you so much for watching!! And once again, WELCOME! 🙌🏼🌸

Thanks so much for your help, and yes I am semi new to your channel and I’ve been enjoying your education! The fertilizer I use is MSU and my media is a mix mostly but the majority of what I use is moss, orchiata, leca, perlite, some charcoal, and a few slow releases fertilizer balls. Depending on the orchid will depend on the makeup and size. Then I use rain water or RO and periodically add magcal. When I gave them the flush out I used rain water. But like I said the flush out seemed to do very little for the salts showing on top of my media :(. Thanks for your help and advice, it’s very appreciated!!

@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 2 жыл бұрын
🌸🥷🏼Trish San! 🥰🤩💐 hi! When you say you need to invest in a better reader... what do you feel is wrong with your's? Honestly, the cheaper versions from Amazon do a great job, and are good enough, because we are talking about minute concentrations of ppm for orchids as opposed to other plants where a TDS meter would need to be high quality... ie, nurseries, mass productions etc, but for our uses here, in our collections, no need to spend $$$ if there were to deviate by 50ppm or even 100ppm, it is not detrimental for our orchids. Usually, they deviate by 20ppm if you were to buy different brands and compare the different readings. The measures are tiny! But, it would interest me why you come to the conclusion that you need to invest in a better TDS meter. I would take the mid range from Amazon. I have never been one to go for the cheapest option, seeing as that was not the way I was brought up, even though they may be just as fine, but, to go top dollar, for what we are doing, there is no need at all. US - amzn.to/3gftNDC I don't know if this link works, because Amazon took my affiliate away seeing as I was not meeting their targets, 😔 but, I did link my TDS meter in the description, or brand equivalent for the US. Had a good Wednesday... thank you! I hope your's was nothing short of fabulous and, that it repeats along the same lines today! 🥳🌸🥷🏼❤️ thank you for watching, Trish ❤️🌸

The TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) is the name of the gadget that measures PPM (Parts Per Million) - Maybe you are getting the pH meter confused with PPM? Not sure. In my kit and kaboodle, I have a TDS meter that reads how many parts per million are in my water, and a separate pH meter, because I have not found that the two readings can be combined into one gadget. I hope I am understanding your question properly and making sense in how I replied! x

Hey!!! 🌸🥷🏼Sue San! 🥰🤩💐 in a nutshell, you are safe to pH your water at 6.5 all the time when growing in organic media. That, is not going cancel out any of the nutrients in your fertilizer based on what is happening in the pots. Some media may be a little more degraded, making the climate of the pot a little more acidic, but, the nutrient uptake with always be fine if you pH at 6.5 to keep it simple as a target pH. No need to check the ppm or the pH of run off water unless you want to when you flush. Only then will you get a better ready of what is coming out of your pots. But, if you are not using massive amounts of fertilizer, then, measuring the ppm is unecessary. The pH could be of interest, to give you an indicator of how the media in the pot is performing. If your run off water in a pot is 5.8pH and below, then that pot needs fresh media. The orchid won't suffer, anything above 5.5pH in the pot is fine, but, it is getting close to getting too acidic which will affect the health of the roots no matter how high you pH your fertilizer solution. The climate of the pot is what it is, in between waterings. Waterings are every so often, but the climate in the pot is what it is, in between waterings. I hope that makes sense? Let me know if I can clarify further... I had a difficult time with this subject because of my dyslexia, but once I wrapped my head around it, I try to keep it as simple as possible, because there is a lot of things that can make it daunting and confusing, which ... it is not! so... ask away!! 🤗💯 the only time too much of a pH adjuster can block out nutrients is if the pH is far too low for any of the nutrients to be taken up. So, if you have gone too low, and then need to raise it again to the 6.5pH, it does not matter, as long as the pH is correct, the nutrients will be absorbed 👍🏼👍🏼 Kwa muda crocodile 😂😂😅🤣 love it!! Have yourself a fabulous Thursday, 🌸🥷🏼 Much love! ❤️🌸

@@NinjaOrchids Asante sana Nina, 🙏🏼 Thank you sooo much for the explaining this. I was worried, having read too on the subject causing me confusion. I read somewhere that you should only use less than 10% of ph adjuster in any given feed solution…since my RO water is sometimes as low as 4.5 -5ph, I have to use a fair amount of silicon and ph up. I didn’t know you had dyslexia. It doesn’t show so don’t worry about it. My nephew was diagnosed with it. I think it’s a name given for a differently wired brain that functions at a higher level so you see to me it’s not an impediment but a enhancement. 🌸🌼🌸

A question, just out of interest... how old is you pH meter? Have you recalibrated it recently? If not, I would recommend to see if that changes the readings of your RO water. If you have all that in place and done done, then forget I even brought it up. If you are uncertain about your pH meter and if it is calibrated correctly, then... buy another one, seeing as they are not that expensive and compare your old one's readings with the new one. See what happens, and if the readings are so different, take the new one's for face value and switch it for the old one. 👍🏼 My dyslexia was a huge problem when I was a child. I was told I was dumb, not paying attention, too stupid to understand, doing things wrong on purpose etcetc, the list goes on and on, and I believed them. I read encycolpedias as if they were novels, German and English dictionaries from cover to cover.... spent a lot of time in Germany reading all these complicated books slowly, in my time, and started to shut the critics up, but still did not know why I would get flustered easily when it came to numbers or the minute someone says 'its easy!' .... those words are triggers, and I feel pressure to have to understand, because, 'its easy!' Still to this day! When I saw similar symptoms with my daughter, I thought she inherited my dumbness and I felt terrible. But we had some tests done, because I was sick of the school telling me my daughter is not capable, and I wanted to prove to them, that it was them that did not have teaching qualities, they did nothing to protect her from the bullying etc... ... and turns out, she is also dyslexic. So, in my mid 30s, something lifted from me, I was not dumb, stupid, careless or a troublemaker, there was this condition I had, and the ignorance of people back then, did not help the situation. So, when it came to understanding pH, TDS etc, I had to really break it down, like you would short bread for a baby. I had to find a logic, and make a system, so that my head can do it without thinking. When those little building blocks fell into place, what I do became a habit. I have problems with thinking too quickly while I absorb information 😬 then what I read 5 minutes ago becomes a big jumbled mess, enter stress.... and the house of cards falls. Frustration kicks in, confidence is out the window, until I can pick up from the start and try again. Oh... and don't get me started with numbers!! 😖 thank you for your kind sentence at the end there 😘

This was really informative! Just to make sure, throughout the video you mean ppm as in, measuring TDS after dissolving the fertilizer, right? Because my TDS meter didn't seem too reliable, I ended up using the calculator on the First Rays website to calculate the ppm of Nitrogen and make sure I'm dosing it correctly. That website recommends 100ppmN weekly, but I assume that the total dissolved salts would be higher since the fertilizer is not just nitrogen, so I decided to under dose a little bit.
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 2 жыл бұрын
HI! 🤗💐 yes... measuring TDS after dissolving the fertilizer. The First Rays nitrogen table can only be used using a calculator, in my opinion. The TDS meter will only measure the Total Dissolved Solids and not the amount of N, you are absolutely right there. When I tried to see what the total ppm was after dosing using 100ppm of nitrogen, I was horrified at how much ppm was going to go into the pots, so... I never did that. I assume that you are using RainMix, I am still on my stash of MSU, which is basically the same. But, if there is everything in our fertilizers, then, yikes, to fertilize using the N amount as a margin for how many ppm... of N, and the rest is 'included'... yikes! No, that was too much for me 😅 I know that Miracle Orchids was dosing using the N component as the measure for the ppm for her orchids, ... there was nothing wrong with her orchids, but... I am too chicken to put that much into my pots 😬 I found that I could unjumble the quagmire of ppm by going by root size, season and growth attribute of the orchids. It sounds like a lot of different applications for different orchids, but in truth, breaking it down for me like this, has made it all so much easier in my head. Having the balanced fertilizer is also a bonus. Once I am done with my MSU stash, I am looking forward to switching to RainMix. Glad to know that it is available in Europe! 👍🏼👍🏼 I hope my comment made sense 😅 really appreciate your feedback... it took a while for me to get what I do out of my head and put it on paper, hopefully keeping it simple, so, thank you, for your feedback 🙏🏼 and for watching! Hi Nina, my tolumnias in red lava rock are not doing anything so they are getting just rain water at 14 ppm. You have clearly stated that fertilizer is NPK only, IOW supplements are not considered fertilizers for the purpose of your video, that is important to know. Right now I am watering my other orchids with water at 463 ppm but having only 63 ppm of NPK, 400 of the other ppms are for calmag, super thrive and PH-up for a 6.5ph. The calmag just by itself accounts for 338 ppm. Most of my orchids are actively growing so I should probably raise the 63 NPK to 100 or 150 (?) What do you think ?
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 2 жыл бұрын
Andre, hi! 🤗💐 in this video example, I had to make clear that I am only referring to ppm with a balanced fertilizer, supplements are not included, because I do not mix supplements to my fertilizer. That is a personal preference, because I do not want anything above the ppm amount mentioned in this video as per root size and orchid activity to go into the pot, or touch aerial roots etc. So... what you are telling me is way more than I would ever fertilize in a single batch. The max ppm I ever deal with is 300ppm and then apply as and when a reservoir is empty, so the activity of the orchid determines how often I have to replenish the reservoir. My fertilizer happens to include Calcium and Magnesium, as I mentioned 'balanced' so... if even in small margins, my orchids always get a bit of that at every watering. I do supplement separately with CalMag, but never add it to my main fertilizer batch. If your tolumnias are not doing anything, then, I have to assume that they are not growing roots either? If that is the case, then there is no need to fertilize them until such a time that they start growing. I don't want to question your methods, but, why is your supplementation higher than your actual fertilizer? If your orchid gets little NPK, it doesn't boost the growth, so there is no need for supplementing to such a degree. There are no structures that warrant such a high supplementation. I would raise the NPK to 100 and halve the supplementation or eliminate supplementation for 2 months, so that the orchids can get used to having more NPK, and get some grow on. Supplementing is a good thing, but only necessary 1x month. Again, I do not want to impose anything on how people fertilize their orchids... but, when the orchid is growing, N is necessary for growth, but the ration of N to your supplements is the opposite of what would be considered 'normal'. I hope that makes sense. Again, no offence! I hope that my answer was of some use! Thank you so much for watching, Andre! 🌸

@@NinjaOrchids yes please, do question my method, I want to learn and your criticism is entirely welcome Nina. I am using a product by General Hydroponics, "CALiMAGic" at the rate of 1 teaspoon per gallon of water as recommended by the manufacturer, I do a 2 gallon batch so I add 2 teaspoons which raises the tds of the water by 338 ppm. My rainwater tds measures 14 ppm so right away my water total tds is at 352 ppm. Now I understand from what you say that this is too much calcium-magnesium ? Your method of not mixing supplements such as calcium and magnesium with NPK is probably what I should do. And what about your seaweed supplement when are you giving it to the plants ? Thanks and I greatly appreciate your advice Nina.
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 2 жыл бұрын
General Hydroponics ... wish I could get that here, I would use it as well if I could get it in Europe.The amount of CalMag is not too high if you are doing it once a month, but, if I did not misunderstand you, you are putting that into your fertilizer mixture every time you fertilize? Please correct me if I misunderstood. When you fertilize, then it is important to do just that... fertilize. Supplement, is not the same as fertiziling. It is an added thing to do... and that is why it is referred to as a supplement. So, if you were to have your fertilizer at 300 ppm then you are giving your orchids a good amount of the most important building blocks, NPK. If you want to use CalMag at every watering (assuming that your fertilizer has no Calcium and Magnesium in it) then 60ppm of the CalMag at every watering is ok. Because you are doing it every time. But, the metabolism of the orchids will not be absorbing 350ppm of CalMag if their building blocks are not provided for (NPK being 60ppm) does that make sense? If you are not comfortable with switching the numbers, and want to supplement with CalMag at every fertilizing. I would recommend you try doing it the other way around. NPK at 300ppm and CalMag at 60ppm. The manufacturer dosis is fine if your supplementing and not adding to your fertilizer. Does that make sense? I hope that I am not confusing you. Please feel free to keep asking for clarification ... and thank you for not taking my comment the wrong way, Andre! Really appreciate that you are open to what I was trying to say without coming across as a know it all. I do not know anything, but when it comes to nutrients,... I know a little 🤗😉

@@NinjaOrchids thanks Nina, I like critical comments, how else are we going to learn ? Rick L uses (5-12-26) which is straight NPK, together with (15-0-0) straight calcium nitrate Ca(NO3) which raises the nitrogen and calcium content of the soil which is, according to Rick, the best form of N for the plant, making N more easily absorbed by the plant. On top of that, much of his substrate is composed of large crushed limestone. Rick emphasizes the importance of calcium. The reason for adding epsom salts is not clear to me, except that it may improve the availability of magnesium when used in acidic mediums. Rick L also adds seaweed extract to his fertilizer.

HI Sandra 🤗💐 I would need to know which orchids are not happy... we can focus on those, seeing as the others are happy, so no need to investigate them 😉😉 keep doing what you are doing for those that are doing great. Which orchids are not doing great? Is it a specific genus? Alliance? Are they big orchids? Small orchids? Growing? Size of roots? Is their light ok? Is the media still fresh, or maybe they need a repot because they cannot take up the nutrients based on the age of the media? You see, those are the questions we need to look into for us to understand if the ppm is too high or the fertilizer too low, so, if you would like to elaborate, then maybe we can troubleshoot together? Really appreciate your feedback, Sandra... looking forward to hearing back from you so that the unhappy ones will be happy again! @@NinjaOrchids thank you for your time, I appreciate your help very much! ❤ First it's my dendrobium harveyanum: all roots died in the moss setting it came with. After repotting it into medium bark it grew new roots (but not much) and tried to grow several new growths, but all except two went black. Now it does nothing since half a year. Then its my Laelia purpurata in new big bark chunks in a very airy pot. She is growing roots but the leaves are yellowing and a new growth seems not to have much strenth. And then it's the "summerbloomer" alliance. My Phal. bellina is the only one that is happy. The amboinensis and the violacea alba x amboinensis are getting yellow leaves and lost some old leafs. The last one also lost two spikes, they also went yellow. The media of all of them is new (from this spring), the roots are healthy and growing. The only Phal. with bad roots is my Phal. violacea alba x bellina. She came with black rotted roots. Only two small ones survived. I cleaned her up and potted her deep in an transparent pot with dump moss at the bottom. I keep the roots moist but they do not grow. Because the harveyanum and the last one are nor growing they don't get fertilised. But my tabwater has 250 ppm. Think light can't be the problem. The laelia grows at a south facing window, the Phals at a west facing window with much (maybe to much?) light.
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 2 жыл бұрын
Lets have a go 🤗 Dendrobium harveyanum - sounds to me like it is set back due to root loss, and the new growths being aborted, could be that it did not have enough energy to grow them. If this were my orchid, even at this stage in the season, I would water it with CalMag at 60ppm and seaweed at 40ppm, @6.5pH mixed together, and as it is late in the season, no need to force any fertilizer into the plant. Some hormones to hopefully promote some more roots or branching, before the season is over and CalMag to support that root growth and get those 2 components into the rest of the plant, ready for the next growing season. Laelia purpurata - are the yellowing leaves shrivelling? If so, then, do the same as with the harveyanum. Support the new growth with some hormones and CalMag, this protects the roots she has, but doesn't stress her as she is trying to figure herself out. If the yellowing leaves are not shrivelling, then, know that, purpuratas have a tendency to get yellower leaves as they age, and, in general, have a yellow green if they get enough light. The opposite of the red anthocyanin in other orchids, when they get the right light levels kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eKmPm8djnri7e6s.html in this first ever video on my purpuratas, I have them... you can compare the coloration of my leaves with your's as a reference. Your light levels are fine from what I can picture in my head. The summer bloomers are magnesium hungry orchids. I will also recommend the seaweed and CalMag solution . It is late in the season and a deficiency will take at least 12 months to correct, but it will be corrected and any new leaf that grows will have what it needs and not take it away from the rest of the orchid structures. Your light levels sound fine, summer bloomers like more light than the regular phals. Phal violacea alba - sounds like it is seriously set back because of no roots, and that is understandable to not want to fertilize if there are no roots. However, if you can give the roots she has in the seaweed and CalMag solution ever so often, then the hormones in the seaweed will trigger more roots based on the fact that you have her on damp moss. CalMag will give the orchid the strength to develop the new roots without draining any reserves from the other structures. Let me know, if what I wrote here, resonates with you. If the color of the leaves on the purparata compares to the colors of mine, that are not shrivelled. (that yellowing color applies to the pseudobulbs as well, so... if they are not dessicating beyond what their age may be, relevant to the rest of the orchid, then... the orchid is ok! 👍🏼

So my tds and ph meter have finally arrived and I tested my tap and RO drinking water yesterday and I was very surprised by my results. My tap had a ph of 6.8 and tds of 003 and RO ph was 7.1-7.3 and tds was 033. I’m shocked that the tap water seems cleaner than the RO water considering my part of the world and to be honest I have never been able to find out where our tap water is sourced from. My landlady and neighbours say “it’s jungle water/mountain water” so weather that’s rain water from the mountains or ground water who knows. But I’m a little confused how to understand the actual tds reading. On the back of its box it says “measures from 0-9990 ppm with a resolution of 1ppm. From 1000-9990 ppm the resolution is 10ppm indicated by drinking water x10 symbol” So would my tds reading 3 ppm or is it 30 ppm? (3x10) Thank you so much and I hope you’re have an amazing day 😊

Hi! 😍💐 thank you for your feedback on this video, I am glad that you found it useful and thank you for letting me know 🙏🏼 you water sounds amazing! Wow... I am jealous... again! so.... it sounds like you can set your TDS meter to read either in increments of 1 or 10. So, if your water is 003 then it is reading in increments of 1. If it were to show x1' blinking (if it does that) then, it is reading in increments of 10 meaning that it is rounding up. So, lets say if your TDS were 037... and your meter is reading in increments of 10 then it would round up to 040. It is my understanding that, TDS meters will read up or down if it is set to reading x10. Does your's have that extra setting? IF it does, I would always opt for the 1ppm resolution as opposed to the 10. It is more accurate that way. The reading you mentioned is how you used it straight out of the box? Was there a blinking x10 when you did your reading? If there was a x10 blinking your TDS meter is rounding up. I hope this really makes sense! Let me know 👍🏼 Wishing you a fabulous Saturday 🌸

Hi Tina 😍💐 Really appreciate your feedback and thank you so much for your time watching the video 🫶🏼 at the time of filming this video, yes, I was fertilizing my vandas and cymbidiums at 300ppm. However, that number increased in the following season to match the increased growth of the orchids. Coincidentally, I upped it to 500ppm 😃 I do not mix my fertilizer in advance. I make a bucket when I need it. If I run out of that, then I prepare another one. Any bit that is left over goes into my plain RO water bucket which dilutes it down to irrelevant, but it won't go to waste when I mist for a second time on warmer or very windy days, like today. Know that I lost my large vandas because of an overdose of copper fungicide, which was my mistake and had nothing to do with the fertilizer concentration. They were growing like beasts, I could hardly keep up 😅 sadly, they are no more but a sweet and beautiful memory.
