Was everything on Mars real or a dream?

My interpretation is dream, but a dream so perfect that the audience doesn’t care. It makes so much sense with Verhoeven’s hyper reality.

It all made perfect sense, until you remember that Quaid was shown a picture of Melina, on the monitor screen at the Total Recall clinic. If Melina was a character from their " Secret Agent " fantasy dream holiday, how was she a real person on Mars?! :)

It’s really awesome to see people still enjoying this movie. What is funny about it is that it is a paradox because there’s evidence to support that everything was real and there’s also evidence to support that it was fake but both can’t be true. But this movie had literally everything you would ever want in a sci-fi, action movie.

The guy who did the effects for this did the effects for The Thing. I think it's all in his head, everything he encounters is inserted into his mind before he gets in the chair. His mind spins a narrative tailored to his life so it can't tell its all a dream. Plus the score does this little whistle at the very beginning and end. Anywho, that's my take on it.

The reasons to believe it was all in his head are because everything that someone from Recall told him would happen, did happen. At the Recall offices: Suite at the Hilton, Secret Agent, deep undercover, people trying to kill him everyone,meet a beautiful exotic woman, get the girl, kill the bad guys, save the planet, Sitting in the chair: 2 headed monster (The psychic inside the other person), the alien reactor is shown on screen, the whole adventure is called Blue Skies on Mars, "He's not going to want to come back" In the hotel room when the doctor visits, the consequences if he kills the doctor: One minute, you'll be the savior of the rebel cause, the next minute Vorhagens bosom buddy. You'll even have fantasies about alien civilizations

The entire film, from start to finish, is the recall implanted memory. The real Quaid is just a normal guy, probably nothing like Arnold. He's more like the guy too old to climb the mountains of Mars, but wants to have the memories of doing it. Do you think he was young and fit, able to climb in his memory, or had to still be old and crippled? It's a vacation from himself, of course he's going to look like Arnold in his recall memory.
@RuntotheMovies
@RuntotheMovies Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching with us. Interesting theory. I don't think anyone else has suggested that yet. Do you think the Lori is also imagined?
@brianmonks8657
@brianmonks8657 Жыл бұрын
@@RuntotheMovies I think one of the biggest problems you would have with implanted memories is that the closer they are to your real life, the harder it would be to tell what memories are actually real. If you just wished you had a vacation on Mars that might not matter, but if you think your wife is not really your wife, Your friend at work is actually a guard to keep any eye on you, etc that could be a problem. Imagine the doubt and paranoia Quaid would feel about his "real life" after waking up if his life was the one portrayed in the film, and it was a dream. I think that nobody in his recall memory would match anyone in his real life. Maybe someone he would never interact with again, like the recall representative, but not his wife, co-workers, friends, etc. Even if Lori was just a girl he just wished he was with, I think that might be too close. I doubt that Lori matches anyone in Quaid's life. She's his fantasy wife brought to life in his Recall memory.

"Total Recall" was a crazy ride at the theaters. You have to pay attention rather early or you get confused really quick until the pieces start to unravel. Michael Ironside is delightful and threatfully brooding (well he generally is in most roles) as Richter and Ronnie Cox, who was in Robocop also directed by Paul Verhoven as Dick Jones... is just out right evil as Cohagen which is sort of an extension of Dick Jones, just more cruel and twisted. Sharon Stone and Rachel Ticotin.... 'nuff said. Your reaction to Kuato was priceless. But still pales in comparison to your reaction during "The Thing", which is probably the wildest reaction to that film to date. HAHA!!

Hey Ladies I've watched a number of these reactions to this movie (mainly because it's my all-time favourite movie. And I don't think I have EVER seen anyone recognise Melina when she first appears at the Mars Bar scene and say that she was on the monitors back at Total Rekall when Arnie is in the chair selecting his 'ideal' woman. Not only that, but you both realised that! Also at the end, not everyone gets that hint either. As a super-fan of this movie I have not just the PKD original short but also the movie tie-in book written by Piers Anthony (an award-winning writer in his own right) and there is a little more inner depth in the book, perhaps because it might have been written on the original script before shooting changes or cutting and editing movie versions. I have the video game too lol So yep, This movie is like my version of what Star Wars is to everyone else. So it's great to see this reaction where you are both lost as the script intended, yet also fully aware of the twists and hints! Brilliant! Anyway, Fantastic reaction, thanks so much for this! YES!!! One of my favorite Arnold Schwarzenegger movies! Before Schwarzenegger was cast as Douglas Quaid, Patrick Swayze, James Caan, Michael Douglas, Tom Selleck, Jeff Bridges, Richard Dreyfuss, Dennis Quaid, and Matthew Broderick were considered. David Cronenberg, director of Body Horror films like SCANNERS, THE FLY, and Videodrome was going to direct the film in 1984 as a psychological thriller rather than a Sci Fi Action Adventure. Producer Dino De Laurentiis bought the rights to the film, and hired ALIEN screenwriters Dan O'Bannon, Ronald Shusset, along with Gary Goldman to write the script, but Cronenberg hated the first draft, while Shusset wanted to do "Raiders Of The Lost Ark Goes To Mars". Tensions between Cronenberg and Laurentiis got so nasty, Cronenberg left the project in 1985 and Laurentiis sold the rights to Carolco the same company that produced RAMBO, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Cliffhanger, And Cutthroat Island. They filmed the movie on location at Churibiscu Studios in Mexico City. Schwarzenegger did most of his own stunts in the movie. Like PREDATOR, half the cast and crew got food poisoning. Thankfully Schwarzenegger and Verhoeven got through it during filming. It was made on a $75 million dollar budget, making it the most expensive independent film at the time. The VFX were done by Industrial Light And Magic, Dream Quest Images , and Metrolight Studios, which would win Best Visual Effects at the 1991 Academy Awards. The film was a box office success making $270 million dollars. Its now regarded as one of the best Sci-fi Action movies ever made.

I like to think the sweaty Recall guy was telling the truth. And that Arnold imagined the sweat right as he decided to reject the pill and the truth (to give himself "proof" so he could justify continuing the fantasy). Then his real wife cries as she turns back until the badass fantasy wife and the wall explodes for no reason as all the bad guys pick up right where the fantasy let off.

Great reaction ladies! Of course everything that happened to Hauser/Quaid in the movie was real. We know this because we frequently saw scenes from a perspective he didn't have and that he wasn't in. The movie is trippy as heck and has a lot of Verhoeven's trademark gruesome FX and deaths. It's one I remember fondly enough but never feel the need to rewatch as my soul goes through the equivalent of a LOT of Tori's facial expressions remembering the more gruesomely brutal scenes. 😀 And, Max, if that was you doing the amazing editing job, great work as always on the Tori's Facial Expressions zoom! 😀

Thanks so much! I'm really glad you enjoy the girls' reactions and the editing! One thing about your theory regarding everything being real: in my personal experience, dreams aren't always from a first person perspective. Oftentimes they play out like a movie with scenes from a bird's-eye view or even from other characters' perspectives. There are other comments on this video so far, on which people said that it's the same for them. I'm not saying I disagree or agree with your conclusion. I'm mostly curious to see what people think and how they reason.

@@RuntotheMovies Max, you are so good at the facial expression zooms. They make me laugh at loud even as I cringe. And just as amusing is the difference between the two of them: Tori looks so horrified while Hannah often looks indescribably happy. 😀 I get your point here, and it is a valid viewpoint for your premise, but remember that the Recall experience isn't offering a dream, because those are free and easy to get. Instead they offer an implanted memory, which means that to be an effective memory the only point of view would be that of the person remembering. To have a "real" memory implanted, the only allowable focus is on the self, otherwise the feeling of it being an actual memory is lost. One can't remember the events of others far distant from the self, so their inclusion would make it just a dream other than a "real" memory. And a waste of 300 credits. It does still slightly support the theory of the psychotic break, since the psychotic can often delude themselves into believing that they can see and hear what others are doing or even thinking far away from themselves, but most psychotic breaks are just unending chains of psychosis, where the enemies never stop and the happy ending is never achieved. That there was a happy ending seems to argue strongly against psychosis. This concludes my irrational psychology 101 lecture. 😀 Sorry about that. But the workings of the mind and psychology have always fascinated me so I have always studied as much about them (albeit haphazardly) as I could. 🙂

@@thatpatrickguy3446 Wow. Thanks so much for the psychology/philosophy talk. Hannah is overseas for a conference right now, but I'll make sure she reads your comment when she returns. This is so up her alley. Interestingly, KZfaq just suggested this video to me last night. It compares Total Recall and The Bourne Identity: m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gr55mMWqmrnOdpc.html

@@RuntotheMovies LOL! I often worry that I too easily slip into pedantic old geezer lecture mode, but psychology has always fascinated me so it is easy for me to drone on about. Unfortunately. 😛 I hope Ms. Hannah has a safe trip and a great time at her conference! An answer isn't required because it is delving into offscreen life, but I'm curious what kind of conference she is attendiung. Anyway, I hope you all have a great weekend! 🙂 The video that you linked to was an interesting one, and the guy makes some thought-provoking points in it. While I still think that the events of Total Recall are effectively real for the reasons mentioned previously, I'm more willing to entertain the thought that Jason Bourne is potentially having a psychotic break, since the bad things never stop happening to him. Or he could just be having what a friend of mine who used to work tradecraft called "a really involved career". 😀But even my friend believed that Recall was more possible than Bourne as most of Arnold's opponents were just corrupt sub-par trained thugs or gunmen instead of supposedly equally well trained assassin-agents. It is an interesting perspective and was an enjoyable watch. Thanks for passing it along!

I like how you noted that the visual framing with the brutalist architecture emphasizes the oppressive, dystopian feeling of the film, and immediately thought of the ethical and psychological consequences of such technology. Of course, as you also noted - we can't be sure what we were watching wasn't an implanted memory. It hints at a general epistemic question: how much can we trust our own memories at any time, especially when for all we know, technology to implant constructed memories is commonplace? Apropos geometric framing and its meaning - my deep-cut suggestion for a movie to watch would be Fritz Lang's "M". It's an absolute classic of German Expressionist cinema. It pioneered several cinematographic techniques and technologies. It has powerful writing, great acting from some of the finest actors of the time (Peter Lorre, Gustav Gründgens) - and it was formative for the visual language of Film Noir.

When you said you don't know what's real, that's the whole point of the movie. Based on a short story, "We can remember it for you wholesale" by Phillip K. Dick (yes, his real name). However there's a scene near the end every woman gets rightly pissed at, pity you skipped over it.

Loved this reaction! Most of Philip K. Dick's work shared similar themes about reality and self identity. Since you liked this one, the other major films based on Dick's stories are: Minority Report with Tom Cruise. Blade Runner with Harrison Ford. Minority Report is just a great film in general, so it's definitely worth watching. Blad Runner is the foundation for the cyberpunk aesthetic found in games and films and it's often considered a science fiction masterpiece. A few minor films based on Dick's work are: Screamers Paycheck with Ben Affleck. The Adjustment Bureau with Matt Damon. A Scanner Darkly with Keanu Reeves. You could skip them entirely if you want to, but they're certainly not terrible films.
