After 4 days without power due to the wildfires in N. CA. (Smith River Complex) it was interesting that when power returned... it was pushing 133 volts for about 18 hours. My EMS-50 advised me by shutting down, and the error code. Ran my 3500 generator until the next day when the voltage stabilized. Love it!

I removed our factory installed refrigerator 6 years ago after 3 recalls and inability to keep stuff cold, purchased a 30 X 24" "real" frig from HD and filled up the 5-1/2" space with a spice cabinet, it did help that I owned a cabinet shop.

I run the same brand in our momentum but we use the green labeled one, it’s installed behind the false wall so it doesn’t get stolen hanging on the power pedestal. But the main reason we went the other route was you can unplug both ends if it fails and then just plug the cable together untill you get a new one and your not having to take all kinds of stuff apart just takes a couple extra electrical components! Great info!

Nice job and thank you, love your videos. I use the inline unit and it as saved us a few time with a ground fault issues. I like the inline because it gives you total protection from shore power, solar and generators. I drilled my own hole in the floor for a wire run and added a string in the run to help guide additional wiring.

We went with the 50A Surge Guard Portable Total Electrical Protection 34951 because we camp at many state parks and other parks and only have 30 amp service. We added the $50 wireless monitor option that allows us to see how much power we are using in the coach and to turn off things if we get close to 30 amps of use. We also like the quick 10-second analysis to access to this model, compared to 128 seconds on the internal model.

Chad - watched this video today and agree TechnoRV is a great source and great people. One key thing you may have over looked comparing the two (Southwire and Progressive) and it was the deciding factor for me to go with Southwire. Southwire is the ONLY brand that protects both LINE side and LOAD side! I have seen wires shake loose in an RV and cause issues and even hot skin on the RV where the EMS would not detect it. Southwire WILL. Keep up all the good videos, ride safe - tell Tara - Love the Scott Calvin hat! I know you will get it... Cheers - Brian & Brandelyne

Low voltage in an RV park or a Marina where the entire electrical system is shared from site to site or dock to dock, is a lethal condition for on board appliances. If you understand that amperage is the lifeblood that your appliances need to live on, then you also need to understand that voltage is the “thrust” in conveyance of that amperage. A low voltage condition starves your appliances of the amperage requirement they need to run on. And the result is that the appliance dies under stress.

Excellent video and thanks for talking about both vendor’s models. I don’t need the giveaway so please don’t include me in the list. I just purchased the Southwire 34951 50Amp model with the add on remote monitor as it seems to have the best Energy dissipation protection (up to 4200 Joules). The 34931 (30 Amp) has 2450 joule protection. Both models have a limited lifetime warranty for the original purchaser. The original or a copy of the original receipt is required, so make a copy and put it with the manual. There is also a connected equipment replacement warranty (fair market value) if the unit doesn’t do its job properly and something gets damaged in your rig. At the end of the day it only makes good sense to have some level of surge protection on your RV, but, as you’ve Clearly explained, surges aren’t the only issues you may encounter so having some level of electrical management or protection makes a LOT more sense. Spending $150-$300+ dollars on some type of electrical protection is a very small price to pay for a rig that may cost from $30K up to $500K or more.

Great topic on this video! On our last trip about a month ago our portable surge protector went bad. It was the molded in terminal the rv cable plugged into became a loose connection and was arching inside. So now we need another one before next season. I went out to look at the new ones and saw the ems units and I was debating on which one to get. Your video just helped me make up my mind, its going to be one with ems in it. The extra cost of that unit will be well worth, instead of having to replae a fridge or a/c unit.

Thank you for the advice on "saving" our RV from surges and sags. We are Grand Design full-timers and have not protected the electrical part of our RV yet, so we hope #GIVEAWAY is the answer to this. We first opted to protect our water supply with a water softener as the water here is Texas is like solid calcium flowing out of the faucet. My wife and I have watched all of your videos and anxiously await your next one every week. We love your candid advice, the sharing of your experiences and we hope that someday we can meet you on the road.

@@ChangingLanes Agreed about the water part. We have been sitting here in Fredericksburg, TX for a few months and within that time, we saw major calcification. I am sure that this was also happening within our hot water heater. Once I saw the issue, we purchased a water softener. I am told that 30 miles east of us, the water is twice as hard. This would be a great subject for you to share with your viewers. We lived in a brick and mortar house in Orlando. What many RVer's do not realize is that Orlando is the lightning capital of the world. More strikes per square mile than any place in the world. Singapore is # 2 in lightning strikes. RVer's that do not have power protection in that part of the country are really risking it.
