@Leigh TheSnapChick hello, Other than using the same lens on multiple systems, why not consider Nikon Z 20 1.8 S and 14-24 2.8 S lenses? As you are getting into Astro photography, very soon you will consider and probably purchase a star tracker, also stacking options via Sequator, and then fast aperture lenses (F1.4) won't matter that much. There is another good lens, Laowa 15 F2.0, And I would consider ISO invariance of the cameras, Nikon Z6/7 shot at 800 can be increased to equivalent ISO 6400 in post with higer Dynamic Range and lower noise, than if shot at ISO 6400. Sony and Leica not so much. Could be a good topic for the next video 😊 Clear skies!👍🏼

I've been using the Rokinon RK12M-E-SIL for astro. It's a 12MM F2.0 all manual lens on a crop sensor E mount Sony. It weighs little (8.6oz) and takes up little space (2.33 inches long) in the bag. Manual is no big for astro, I focus at almost infinity and leave it wide open. The price is great - and with a tip. The silver version is $249 on Amazon. The same lens in black is $319. Go figure. For $70 less, silver is just fine. Maybe this lens is not for a pro, but as a starter for astro, it's a competent, economical choice.

I bought the Nikon 20mm f1.8 before there were art lenses, but I had to consider others. Then, the Nikon 14-24 was a "holy Grail" astro lens for some, but the price put it out of reach. I don't usually shoot wide open because this lens isn't as abberation free as I'd like.

I used to own the Sigma 20/1.4 for E-mount back when it launched. I found the astro performance wide open lackluster, the astigmatisms in the corners annoying. As a result I had to stop down to 2.4 or 2.8 usually. When the Sony 20/1.8G launched I switched and haven‘t looked back. I get your reasoning for the Sigma and it‘s a great lens. For predominant Sony shooters I‘d advise against it.

Since you have a Nikon Z camera, I would go for the Nikon Z20mm 1.8 S! A fantastic lens for astro photography!

14, 20 and 24 each have their own use cases. Like you, there are usually multiple cameras out when it’s Milky Way season, one for panoramic compositions, one one a tracker and one doing time lapses. Thinking of adding a fast 35 now, so will probably sell off either the 20 or the 24.

Laowa 10-18 f4.5-5.6 - fantastic results in my opinion. the long exposures do cause noise if you're not stacking photos... Also you get a star ray (which i like) effect from bright stars/planets due to aperture blades

My astro lens is the Nikon 20mm f1.8 G. I got it for landscapes when I got my D810 then later got into astro. I still use it with the FTZ on my Z7. It's got a bit of coma but is not too bad at the sizes that I print. I am waiting to see what other ultra-wide fast lenses come out in Z-mount.

I got the newest version of the Tamron 17-35 F2.8-F4 on the for Nikon Fmount. I have a Z7. Was actually out shooting stars with it this past weekend, and this upcoming weekend will be out again. I can send you some of the files at different ISO settings if you want to see how it goes if you want. I got it because I have have other Tamron lenses that are great, and for the price of this vs the 14-30F4 Z mount lens it was a no brainer.

I have Canon EF, Nikon F and Sony FE systems, but eventually realized Pentax is by far the best choice for astrophotography and was thinking about the K-1 camera lately. Unfortunately not even my Nikon lenses can be adapted for the K mount, but Pentax has the Tamron derived 15-30mm 2.8, the highly regarded Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art, many long SMC Pentax K lenses that are now inexpensive, plus some new HD lenses of the FA line. A good star tracker is very expensive and unpractical to move around and setup. The Pentax K-1 solves that problem.

The Sigma 20mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art is a disgrace for shooting stars at night. The stars in the corners of a photo full of stars, either with 1.4 and 2.8 apertures, have very strange shapes. I don't recommend. For landscapes it's great. But for shooting stars at night there are options much cheaper and achieving better results.

Great video as always! I went with the Nikon 20mm f1.8 because I liked the added ability to use filters. I'm new to Astro and have found that using a light pollution filter has helped my images as I live near a large city and have not been able to travel, like everyone else! My Mum went with the Sigma that you bought. Have you found that you need to stop the Sigma down to f1.8 or f2.0 to improve corner sharpness? Also, I've read that the Sigma 35mm Art lens is amazing for Astro!

I am using the Voightlander 15mm f4.5 Leica M mount, initially adapted manually to Sony A7, A72 and A7R2 even when using the TechArt Pro to get autofocusing. Sold all the Sony Cameras and lenses, but kept these Voightlander 15mm f4.5, 40mm Classic f1.4 & Color Ultron 55mm f1.4 (QBM) for my Nikon Z5. Overall Voightlander are great lenses.

I'm facing the same decision process now, and I'm leaning towards the Sigma 20mm 1.4 as well. Astrophotography won't be my main subject, but I want a versatile lens that will allow me to shoot the night sky. However, I've been watching and reading TONS of reviews not recommending this lens for astrophotography because it would have too much coma distortion close to the borders. Would you have any words on that once you tried this lens?

My technically best Milky Way photo was with the Tamron 15 to 30 sp f2.8. The sky was insanely dark in Montana. The Tamron can be shot wide open. I also have my favorite shot with the Rokinon 20mm f1.8, stopped down one click from wide open. I also have the Rokinon 14 mm sp f2.4. I found it sharper than the irix 15mm. The 14mm is sharp wide open. I have heard the Sigma have issues till f2.8. Camera is important too. The Canon 6D mii did well in Montana, I use an R for Astro now, but not the R5. I think the R6 or z6 would be the ideal cameras. Still waiting for the made for mirrorless fast and wide Astro lens….

@@LeighAndRaymond In Montana I was northwest of the crazy mountains at over 5000 ft. I think altitude and air quality had an impact. The number of visible stars captured was the highest. My other photos are from northern Minnesota. In both locations so far north, there are really less than three hours of darkness. Lots of variables to consider.

I just saw this review of these two lenses from Sigma's Art series. My question is if you are still using and advising Sigma's 20mm f1.4 lens and if the horrible coma that appears in the corners really doesn't bother you. I also own that lens and am not very happy with the astrophotography results of this lens for this reason.

For astro I do care about coma performance. For this reason I decided not to buy the Sigma 14mm, it's not so bad nor the benchmark in this regard. Waiting for the new Sigma 14mm DG DN version for L-mount, in the meantime I bought a decent Laowa 15/2, same coma performance of the Sigma but at a fraction of the price and weight (and I can mount squared pollution filters as well). Regarding 21mm, one of my favourite focal lenght, I'm still waiting for the Leica SL Summicron 21/2...
