You might never have heard about one of the hardest jobs in the Navy. The Naval Construction Battalion -better known as the Seabees- is the group tasked with building many of the US’s military installations around the world. Seabees are deployed globally to construct bases, airfields, roads, bridges, and underwater infrastructure critical to US military operations. Seabees often work long hours and must be able to build and repair this infrastructure quickly, under harsh conditions, and during wartime.
The Seabees were formally established on March 5, 1942, to assist with construction during the second World War; its name comes from an abbreviation of “Construction Battalion”, while its motto is “Construimus, Batuimus”, or “We Build, We Fight”. In the nearly 8 decades since, the seabees have lived up to the motto, serving in every major US conflict and constructing numerous monumental projects around the world. Among these were research bases in Antarctica, where Seabees built structures like the remote Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, including its famous 6-story metal protective dome.

I was a Sea Bee from 1959 to 1963. One of the projects i was on was replacing power lines and poles on Kodiak Island that had been put up hastily at the onset of WW2.

My granddad was a SeeBee in Saipan and tinian. One of the coolest things he ever told us was that to build some of the runways, they ground-up coral, spread it flat across the airfield and then kept pouring water on it for a few days. Then the still living coral grew together like concrete!

I almost signed up to be a Seabee when I was at MEPS, but I was talked out of it to be an MC instead. I loved my rate, but I always kick myself for not knowing better and allowing myself to be talked out of being a part of this. Ah well.

No their not the same. You don’t know what your talking about, the Seabees we’re the very first to enter Iraq along with the marines when OIF kicked off. They cleared the way to Baghdad! They’ve served a crucial role since march of 1942. When they built runways for the navy to land and refuel/rearmament. And the rout clearance and mind sweeping in Vietnam.

@@c.e.p.h.516 lmao as a Seabee myself, it is 1 working 3 standing around. Seabees haven't been a wartime fighter in along time! Most of the time we are working on projects or Preparing for a project by Planning and Estimating! This isnt the Seabees of the early 2000s or 90s

Not a Seabee, but I've worked in construction. The reason you see people standing around looking like they're doing nothing is for many reasons. It's not that construction workers are lazy, far from the truth. Sometimes you got supervisors and safety guys or project managers or engineers ensuring that the work is done right. Sometimes, because constructing is hard labor, there are workers taking turns on a shared task. Sometimes there are procedures in place for how a task is done. Another thing is that civilians don't understand that construction involves more than one trade and sometimes one trade has to wait for another to finish a task or they're there working with someone from another trade.

That may be true now I don't know. In the 80's that didn't happen. The culture just didn't allow it. You pulled your weight plus. If you didn't you weren't very popular especially by the boss's.

One of the most annoying things that I found about being a Seabee was some people outside the organization not having a clue of how this works. A Seabee is a Seabee no matter the command. It doesn't matter if they are a part of one of the NMCBs, CBMUs, ACBs, NAVFAC, NCHBs, SpecOps Support, working in a foreign Embassy or Camp David. If you are one of the Seabee ratings, you are a Seabee.

If this job came with a blurb, it would read: “Must love explosives.” If it came with a test it would go: “Getting rid of a stump, would you: A) Use Explosives, B) A Chainsaw, or C) Dig out the tree?” Correct Answer: “A, Always A, no matter the question. Also, smuggle in beer and watch it explode, from a distance that makes the infantry very nervous and question if you want to live.”
