Rarely have there been so many new racing bikes at the Tour de France as this year. We took a look at the pro racing bikes for the Tour de France 2024 at the Grand Départ in Florence and show everything from the bright special paint jobs to hidden new tyres.
Tour pro racing bikes 2024 - what stands out?
Professional racing bike technology used to be very different from the material used by hobbyists for their races and tours. That has changed, even if there are still small details that make the subtle difference. One reason for this is the UCI equipment rule alone, which states that all professional road bike technology must also be freely available on the market as a series in certain quantities within a year.
What are the trends? There is a growing trend among teams sponsored by major brands to use only one racing bike for all stages except the time trials. Top competition racing bikes combine low weight and excellent aerodynamics. Some reach the UCI minimum weight limit of 6.8 kg, but not all. The Specialized Tarmac SL8 marked the beginning of the move away from the additional aero-only race bike. But at Canyon Teams this year we only saw the Canyon Aeroad and at Lidl Trek there is only the much lighter, new Trek Madone SLR. Israel Premier Tech is also only on the Factor O2 VAM aero road bike.
In general, it is noticeable that the end of "widening" has not yet been reached in terms of tyres. We often see tyres that are nominally 28 mm wide on wide, sometimes hookless rims that are then around 30 mm wide. This should put the teams in a good position for the gravel stage to Troyes.
