This is a tour of the tent I have designed and made. my old tent was at the end of its life and I could not find a tent with all the features I wanted. This is the first time I have tried to make a tent.
The next video will explain how I designed a built the tent

@RestlessKiwiHiker
@RestlessKiwiHiker 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I only used it for a few nights before my thru hike was cut short because of the lockdown. The day it rained heavily the tent stayed dry to the touch inside so it may have been the ventilation or just not cold enough for condensation. The other nights were not in conditions that cause condensation. The sewing is not perfect, wonky seams and some rough gathers but it functions as intended. I am a novice self taugh sewer.

Do you I could make a 4 person tent to hold my wife and 3 kids along with me? Sewing wise It would be easy, just adjust the width dimensions. The thing that would need to be tested is if the pegs cound hokd the extra strain to keep the spine taut.

Thanks Sarah. Yes this was the tent I used on my recent thru hike snd it performed well in strong wind, both steady and gusty, and rain. Once even with half the pegs only a couple of cm deep due to hard ground. I got the DCF from Ripstop By the Roll. My next video will break down all the materials by; anount, cost and supplier.

Wow, this is great! Such a great and rewarding project. I've just bought a very similar tent (making one on my own far exceeds my sewing skills - for now). I'm thinking about upgrading it with these little poles you came up with to extend the head and the foot room. Did you sew the sleeves into the mesh and the hull or did you just cut an opening in the mesh to slide them through?
@RestlessKiwiHiker
@RestlessKiwiHiker 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jonus. I left a space in the mesh for them to go through. It is small enough that there is no gap and the insects havent made there way through it yet.
@markcummings6856
@markcummings6856 4 жыл бұрын
Beautiful. Those side extender struts are genius! Couple questions: 1. They go through the bug netting? 2. Why bother with a sleeve for them? I may have to get right on modifying my duplex for the same idea! Thanks Homemade!
@RestlessKiwiHiker
@RestlessKiwiHiker 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mark. Yes they go through the netting to ensure they are in the tight place. The sleeves serve two purposes. They keep the poles in the right place. I used these poles on my old tent and in wind they slide off the right spot and fall down. The other reason is to guide through the mosquito netting so there are no gaps for the insects to get through and to reduce the risk of ripping the netting.

@RestlessKiwiHiker

Not so far. It is better than my last tent which I think is due to the top vents which I generally have wide open except in heavy rain. I do consider campsite location if it is likely to be conditions conducive to condensation.

thanks for sharing. i to am making my own tent and i just wondered if you could tell me what thread you think is best for sewing the dcf material. Doug
@RestlessKiwiHiker
@RestlessKiwiHiker 2 жыл бұрын
I am not sure if it is best but I used polyester upholstery thread. It is stronger than normal thread and lasts better in the wet than cotton. I bought it at my local sewing shop so easily available. Despite severely overloading my homemade pack at times (21kg going through Sierras in heavy snow) and completing PCT and another 2 month hike the thread is showing no signs of wear.

I love this tent design. Have you had a chance to use it? Would you change anything? I always thought a sky light flap over the head area would be wonderful on a cloudless starry speckled night. With maybe a breathing flap option just over the head and face. Do you have a pattern I could use to make one similar, but custom to my 5'7" (172 CM) Anyway well done, thank you for sharing.
@RestlessKiwiHiker
@RestlessKiwiHiker 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kuhn. Yes I got to use it on my recent thru hike, though only for 4 nights as I had to stop due to countrywide virus lockdown. It performed well in high wind and rain but I would like to use it in a wider variety of conditions to get a real feel for it. My next video will be on the design and making of my tent and will include detailed plans, material list and even patterns. These should be easy to adjust to make the tent longer. If you dont keep gear at your foot and head the tent would fit you as it is. The foot poles make it really roomy and allow taller people to fit in a shorter length than normal. For reference I am 165 cm.

Hi. I have two videos detailing how I designed and built the tent you may be intetested in watching. It took 2 days full time to build the tent. I drew the plans based on my wish list and then built a basic scale model testing a couple of designs. I then used cheap cotton for full size testing before using the hood material. The only parts I used from my old tent were the rings for the self support option. I used DCF seam tape purchased from Rocky Mountain Fabrics on Amazon and direct from Ripstop by the Roll where I also got most of my fabric.

Hallo , do you have inside some water from condenzation?
@RestlessKiwiHiker
@RestlessKiwiHiker Жыл бұрын
At times yes though much less than my previous tent. The top vents help. Unfortunately all single wall tents can get condensation and good campsite selection is important. However the condensation runs down the wall and through the mesh and even after 25 days in hot and wet weather I never had any condensation drip on me. Also the DCF fabric is easily wiped dry and doesn't hold water so drying and packing the tent is easy.

How would you add a guye line point above the head of your sleeping pad
@RestlessKiwiHiker
@RestlessKiwiHiker 2 ай бұрын
Just sew a loop using cross-grained ribbon and stick on a DCF reinforcement patch over the stitching (on the inside of the tent) to waterproof it. In this tent design I never needed additional guy attachments. The end poles gave good foot/head clearance at the ends and I was never in places where the wind was extreme enough to need extra tie downs.
