We're grateful to the management and staff of Marilissa Farms for allowing us special access to give you a behind the scenes look at their process. Join host, Khristy Beharry-Renie as she explains the production process and gives information on the different breeds of sheep and goat at Marilissa.
____________________________________________________________________________
"Marilissa Farms is located on fifteen acres of lush grassland in Penal, Trinidad. Out of an intense passion for farming, the farm was originally developed as a hobby.
What started as a hobby farm developed into the largest small ruminant farm in the Caribbean.
Our farm currently consists of over 3000 goats, 4000 sheep, cattle, rabbits, llamas, miniature donkeys, Shetland ponies and a wide variety of birds and wildlife including but not limited to peacocks, macaws, parrots, geese, ducks and guinea birds just to name a few." - Source: www.marilissafarms.com

@shri.s mom.s kitchen Most of the farming done in Trinidad is done by Indians. It was like that since slavery was abolished and the black people who become the ex slaves went to Port'-of' Spain. The Indians who were brought in as indentured labourers was able to inherit a lot of land to do their farming decades after.. So when people shop they are supporting Indians. It was always like this when coming to agriculture. You all have to stop stressing on race. It is becoming like America with their division and hate. Indians own most of the businesses after the Syrians. Do not act as if people don't support Indians. This is also an international platform, so don't give people the wrong impression.

Congratulations. This is the type of production that is needed in Trinidad. Large scale farms in order to spend less on importing food. Too much negative news are put out by the media about the country. You should include tours as part of the tourist sector. I am sure you can fit in one or two tours a month especially for schools. I would love to visit on my next trip. The goats are loving but unfortunately one day they will go to market.

Great story of a successful agri-processing business in T&T. Trinidad also had one of the largest water buffalo population in the Caribbean, suitable for meat and milk production. Not sure what happened to that. However, as the Oil&Gas sector decline, a return to sustainable agriculture with family owned farms, will become increasingly necessary. A valuable lesson for Guyanese who are mostly intoxicated with new Oil.
