Eastern Europe might not be everyone’s number one travel destination. Communist-era buildings, the conflicts in the 1990s and border disputes in recent years have meant much of the region has been overlooked by potential tourists. But with its patchwork of pretty, pastel-colored old towns, incredible ancient history, exciting nightlife, and nature from sprawling lakes to swooping mountains, Eastern Europe is a surprising delight. Here’s a look at the best places to visit in Eastern Europe:

The truth is that the top five places are overloaded with tourists. There are many more beautiful places in Eastern Europe where there are not so many tourists yet. I am from Poland, so I will give it as an example. Krakow and Warsaw are the most popular cities, but there are also Gdańsk, Toruń, Wroclaw, Poznań, Łódź, Lublin, equally beautiful and rich in history. Small historical towns like Sandomierz, Kazimierz Dolny, Brenna, Sanok, Zamość. Many castles, landscape parks, Mazury land of a thousand lakes, mountains. I encourage everyone to look for less known tourist destinations, they are more authentic.

Fun fact. Prague is located west of Vienna and Stockholm, so much to "Eastern Europe". It is also the opposite of a hidden treasure as its one of the most overrun tourist destinations in Europe. That said, like Venice it is fully justifiably overrun by tourists as it is a stunning place.
@sofron1977
@sofron1977 4 жыл бұрын
@@sagichnicht6748 Fun fact - Czechia is also a slav country - full of slav people that speak a slavic language and also share common recent history with Russia and the rest of Eastern Europe. It's about culture, people, language and not so much about location. Cuz if it would be geographically based only - Bulgaria, Albania, Macedonia are all in Southern Europe.
@ioanciumasu994
@ioanciumasu994 4 жыл бұрын
@@sagichnicht6748 Good point. Romanians only reluctantly admit they are "Eastern Europe" because of the location, but they see themselves as an island of western culture/people surrounded by slavs; their orthodoxy is also historically a reaction against the Popes who wanted to bring them under their fold, and they resisted it - so basically a kind of - sort of protestantism before protestantism. They are essentially Carpathian highlanders speaking Romanian since Roman times - Wallachians (plus Saxon settlers with which they partly intermingled in Transylvania or which they completely assimilated in Moldova) that resent any domination or encroaching over their freedoms - see the case of the Bohemian Wallachians who didn't obey to Habsburg rule but were ultimately destroyed by the Habsburg when they got surrounded by catholic powers and couldn't have the support of Danish, Swedish and Hungarian protestants anymore. BTW, Hungarians are catholic with the exception of the areas bordering Romanian populations (like along eastern Hungarian border with Romania and in Transylvania - where also the Saxons were and are protestant). So basically being Latin-speaking orthodox was what projected their cultural identity, which anyway is a synthesis of ancient Dacian, Graeco-Roman, Gothic, Saxon (and other Germans), and a bit of Slavs (which were actually themselves, those bordering Romanians, in fact slavicized Goths and Romanians rather than slavs proper -- all areas bordering Carpathians are like this, including Southern Poland, eastern Czechia, then Slovakia and Western Ukraine. Anyway, cultural richness and syncretism is a good thing! :)

@sofron1977
@sofron1977 4 жыл бұрын
@@KaterinaNov Yes, agree there was no Russian liberation, more like Russian invasion but I hope you know the forming of the Eastern Bloc and areas of influence was in a way agreed upon with the west after WW2. We leave this aside - the fact you have common history with the Germans, doesn't mean that makes you "Central Europe", same as we had 500 years of common history with the Ottoman Empire - which doesn't make us West Asia nor Turks. So we have to leave culture, language and ethnicity aside - because you Czechs are slavs - like the rest Eastern Europe. Your DNA is primarily is Balkan and Eastern Europe (Ukraine, Russia, Belarus etc). Now, I don't see any particular reason to leave aside culture, language and ethnicity apart from pleasing the "superiority complex" that Czech people have over the rest of the slav countries. But let's say I do...let's say - ethnicity and language doesn't unite us together. Then very well, Bulgaria is Southern Europe. Cuz that's where it is on the map. Same with Albania, Macedonia and everything on the Balkans. Eastern Europe - well that's only the peers of Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus and Russia ofc.

So, yes, it always will be, Eastern Europe also means socialist construction, overcrowded, orthodox churches, industrial cities and zones and that is here not the case, they do have a lot of them have a different story and history, not all, and I am not saying that some culture interaction does not overlap and exchange, but Prague is surley Central Europe.

Eastern Europe is underrated becouse many tourists still associate this region with iron curtain and socialism, and the truth is that now these are intensively developing countries, and their historical inheritance goes much further than the communist period. Medieval castles, renaissance tenement houses, baroque palaces, gothic churches, and you can see it for a much lower price than in Western Europe. I think that all of Europe is beautiful and worth seeing.
