I've always been taught to NOT final tighten the bushing fasteners until the tire is on the ground and the suspension is loaded with the normal weight of the car, that way the bushing is tightened in its neutral position. Otherwise the bushing will be twisted when it is in normally loaded position, and will be over twisted in jounce or rebound, which will destroy the new bushing prematurely.

My mechanic said the same thing to me when he changed an axle seal in the front end of my Ranger. Granted, the truck was well cared for and mechanically had just over 100k miles on it. Everything was still free of issue at that point.

Couple months back I got a call from my girlfriend when I was in bed saying she "ran into a branch in the road and isn't sure if she should drive the car home". Asked a few questions and drove over there. I get there and there is an ENTIRE tree in the road that had knocked down a power line to boot. Her car is up on this "branch" front end hanging off and fluids everywhere. (As an aside none of this was her fault, thing was right around a blind curve and she didn't have any time to stop. Didn't hit it super hard but a mirage can only take so much)

So your average shop labor hour is about $80. Per labor hour. They work off a book rate for time ie he has a certain amount of time to finish the job in his stall. It's not that hard to do some quick estimates

Ray I was watching your youtube( I think I hit something). You were using a hammer to hit another hammer. Don't take this the wrong way. I have been in the machining business for 50 years. My friend lost his eye hitting one hammer against another. They are both hardened and one of them shattered and went into his eye. You might have safety glasses on. But I would hate to see anybody loose their eyesight,

Sometimes you just gotta take a risk. That said, eye protection is probably OSHA-mandated in that workplace, meaning that anyone walking around without safety glasses on their eyes has chosen to take their own chances.

that is absolute correct . pieces that comes from a hammer are like bullets . they go thru flesh up to the bone . it can rapture a vain or cut it . i was standing 5 meters away from a guy who did this and got hit in my thumb . a hammer is hardened in front and back . the middle of the hammer is softer .

so yeah, i have to say.... it's refreshing to see a mechanic do good work, and not try to absolutely screw people at the same time... it was so nice to hear you say "the strut should be fine, but we'll wait for the alignment" and not even talk about replacing the knuckle, sway bar link, inner/outer tie rod, steering gear, etc., etc. Let alone you didn't immediately replace the wheel and tire, and from the video i'd have to say it didn't come across that you called your customer to say the tire has to be replaced along with the wheel, and we "strongly" recommend replacing the other 3 tires at the same time because of tread depth differences and "safety" reasons.... every mechanic shop where I live just bids for everything, every time.

At age 73, I am impressed with these cars that have problems over 100K miles! Back in the sixiies, cars were all used up by 100K. The auto manufacturers must have competition from Japan and make them better. Of course, they could be made even more durable if their competitors do.

@@svenschwingel8632 People say that, but it's mostly not true IMO. Like in terms of "this is broken, so now the car no go" there really isn't too much new on modern cars. Really just run down a list of key systems between a modern and old one and it becomes apparent. -Starter? Old car had that. -Battery and charging? Old car had that. -Injection systems? Just replaces carbs really. - Coil on pug just replaces old ignition systems. Though it's WAY easier to service and way more reliable than any of the older systems. -The actual mechanical bits valves, cams, cranks, etc had all that too modern engine might have somewhat more moving parts or it might not since many modern engines have fewer cylinders. More engines might come stock with turbos nowadays, but a bad turbos usually mean's an underperforming car, not a non-running one. -Transmissions? Had them on old cars too. -Not much has really changed in the suspensions on common consumer vehicles in decades -Brakes, same shit really, expect discs have taken over by and large and are way easier to service then drums So... what are we left with in terms of "this is broken the car no go" on a modern car that wasn't on an old car? Basically, just two things IMO: 1: A critical control module is totally buggered, but this is quite rare 2: The immobilizer system malfunctions Most of the "more stuff to go wrong" is really niggly bits like infotainment systems, climate control, driver assist stuff, etc but that stuff not working doesn't actually stop the car from working as a car. In allot of ways most of the 'modern tech' in cars is just a coat of paint that obscures the fact most of the core competent are at most just refinements of pretty much the same core systems that have been in use for like 50 years at this point.

I hit a pot hole in Cleveland that was filled with water, and it was raining so I couldn't see it, in my 2017 Beetle. Ended up with needing an alignment and a cracked rim. Tire was alright according to the tire guys. The rims that Nissan uses must be tough to hold up to that much damage. Those special edition Beetle, Dune VW rims were $250 used on eBay.

Roads in Michigan are bad my winter car is a 1999 camry i went with the 14" rims for my snow tires and the 15" for summer if your roads are bad do not get the low profile tires

Personally in your situation, I'd think you'd need and alignment and a straight rim. I doubt you'd like riding on a bent one...

@@dantresohlavy7323 you are correct I just reread what I typed and I indeed need a new rim, tire and an alignment. I only had 3,000 miles on the car at that time. Rim I was able to get from the wreckers near me.

Well, I do feel some compassion for the driver of this poor Nissan. I experienced some unintentional off road action here in the frozen Alberta winter (Blinding snowfall / blizzard). Yup, off the highway and into the ditch where I hit something too. Turned out to be a massive boulder that crumpled the subframe of the front of my GMC Envoy. I had to take it to a frame shop and the owner there basically had to rebuild it. It wasn't an inexpensive repair to say the least. Good work Ray and excellent videography. Cheers!

@@name_less7687 I'm not sure what's confusing or funny about my comment. I am not a professional mechanic but still enjoy his videos. If he shows a part that is sheared, snapped, broken, etc. the damage is obvious. But for a part like the control arm, I have no reference for what that looks like undamaged. I believe him when he said it was "twisted...a lot" But a comparison between the new and damaged parts would be interesting and enlightening for us laymen.

The wheel bearing was probably damaged in the accident. I would have drained the transmission oil first (if there's a drain on those). I find some grease on the inner cv shaft snap ring holds in central and helps it in. Some copper slip on the lower arm bolts will also give you an easier time.

Glad to see you properly torqueing the lugs. I had an alignment job done after lowering my truck and had to put 300 lb ft on the lugs to get them of for a pad and rotor change shortly after

That is what pisses me off about a lot of shops, Everything has torque specs for a reason. Now having said that, a good mechanic can get it close by hand when they are used to certain size wrenches and ratchets, and having torqued a lot of stuff. The problem comes in when those lazy ass mutha fuckers want to impact everything on and not properly torquing it, and tire shops are the most notorious.

I would have lost my shit, You plan ahead like u are told or have been taught u should do, as it is the responsible thing to do. You bring ur automobile to get checked out and u are worse off than before u started, not only worse off but prob a decent amount in damage to vehicle and a planned trip ruined. I hate to use the word sue, but this is the reason why people sue, for damages and distress, of what should have been a perfect trip, because u did everything u were supposed to do. But due to laziness or incompetent employee, possibly both, u were set up for failure the moment u left the shop. U cant make this shit up man.

@@reality150tv Luckily I've been around the block once or twice. I replaced the damaged studs and continued with the trip, checking the toqrque on the wheel nuts every day. The shop replaced the damaged disc and wheel studs without any argument.

At 4:40 you were using two hammers to remove the front drive shaft from the hub. I was told to NEVER hit two case-hardened surfaces together as they can fracture and literally explode throwing case-hardened chips in all directions. I would recommend a dead-blow hammer or a hammer and a brass rod.

They definitely won't shatter into millions of pieces like a big explosion or anything, but metal can chip off and potentially go flying. Shattering is bullshit though it can still be dangerous

I have a big knot on my arm bone just above my wrist from using one hammer to hit another. A shard flew off and cut all the way into the bone. Bled like crazy. Lucky it wasn't my eye. Lesson learned for me!

I always used the spindle to snap the axle back in just before re attachment, made things faster during reassembly. Less going back to the toolbox action.

Turning L, I bumped against a curb and it tweaked everything unbelievably on an '85 Supra. Had to get towed. Wasn't going fast and didn't hit it hard. I figure it's just certain angles will get you. Had two passengers with me and we were all dumbfounded at how much damage had been done in what seemed like a nothingburger occurence.

I live in the deep south. My wife's family lives in Illinois and we go up there 3 times year. I took my car to an alignment shop and the guy asked if I ever drove up North. Not being a mechanic, I can see how being in the salty & snowy winters can affect the guys who take care of cars. Just 10 trips made my aligner guy get frustrated over some rust. 😀

Maybe it's a NE thing. We don't destroy our cars with road chemicals in the NW. I can't speak for Seattle, though, since they're on the coast (I was inland). Anytime buying a car and saw rust, I assumed it was from Seattle.

@@michaelm.1947 I'm in PA and yes, they spray liquid crap all over the roads here before snow, then salt it so heavily the asphalt will be bone white for a month. Suspension work is a huge PITA up here. There's a guy where I work with a three year old Wrangler. Looks brand new, unless you crawl underneath. If I took pics of just the suspension from underneath you'd probably think it was 30 years old. Badly rusted. You gotta wash that salt crap off pretty frequently in the winter or that's what happens.

I saw something similar happen to a similar vehicle. Left ball joint seared off while slowing down on the highway. The ball joint looked like it had been cut halfway through with a hacksaw. Lucky there was no injuries, just a lot of sparks and the vehicle slid onto the shoulder.

Hey Ray good video as always but one thing that concerned me was starting the vehicle without doing a visual inspection first. There could have been a damaged oil pan or transmission pan. Maybe you did check off camera or something but I would definitely be careful with that. I once hit a big metal drain cap that came out of its hole and was rolling down the road and although I shutoff the car afterwards I had lost just about every fluid imagine. Radiator, oil pan and transmission. Even the steering rack was damaged. Everything down the middle of a subaru (which is literally everything)

Knocking two hammers together to remove the drive shaft from the hub!! as an apprentice mechanic it was something I was told never to do as one or both of the hammers may shatter, I was cringing as I watched and was glad when he stopped and reverted to the air chisel.

Just seen this video for the first time. I'm amazed that the steering rack tie rod end wasn't wasted too. Did she hit a curb while offroading in Afghanistan? I've seen my share of pulled out ball joints but usually on 4X4's in the field. Mabie in her lingo 'hitting a curb" is code for a parking block while driving full speed across a parking lot. Seen it happen with similar results.

I remember helping my uncle replace that, only it was on both sides and the vehicle was 2002 Dodge ram 1500. Then, after we thought we were done and test drove the truck, the rubber tore open and slung grease all over the bottom of the truck. Thankfully that didn't happen with the second one we put in. That was a pain. Especially seeing as I had to do everything laying down when I was working under the vehicle. I did find an easy way to align the tires though, all you need is something straight that can go the length of the vehicle, or at least close to that, like a taught string, a tape measure, or something like that, and to adjust a nut, I don't remember what way to adjust it though lol.

Wouldn’t a “dead-blow” hammer work better for stuff like this instead of an air hammer? It won’t mar the metal and it packs a punch on stuff like this. I got a few of them from Harbor Freight, they were pretty cheap and I can’t live without ‘em. I got a big one (for those “I wasn’t asking” jobs) and a little one for the “tappy tap tap” jobs. Love the videos man, keep ‘em comin’! 😎

In my experience, a dead-blow that is heavy enough for this kind of job usually has too big of a head. Not to mention, the rubber coating dulls the impact and makes it less effective. What you use instead is a hub puller. It bolts onto the hub using the lug nuts and has a threaded shaft with a taper on the end that screws into the center of it. You turn the shaft and it forces the axle out.

If you notice, there is conical shaped dimple in the end of the axle shaft specifically for that purpose.

I can never get the CV joints to snap off, so I found a clamp that goes around the CV housing, and my slide hammer threads right into it. Never had a problem since, and I'm able to work within the wheel well.

Once upon a time my FIL bought a farm and we went to check it out in my relatively new car. The hay was as tall as the hood of my car. Very slowly I drove around the pasture. I ask FIL where the well head he had mentioned was located. He said, “Over next to that fence.” Immediately my car came to an abrupt halt. I found the well by myself. As I drove home the steering wheel was 90 degrees off. My lower control arm looked like the one you removed.

The curbs in the area that this happened are designed to be noticed by 20k lbs vehicles. They don’t want the drivers to be playing fast and loose on the way to drop off passengers.

Dad was a diesel mechanic. Once when I was 5-7 years old I watched him disassemble the drum break on his car. When he was ready to assemble it again, he could not remember where all the little bits belonged. I remembered and showed him where they belonged, and the breaks performed properly.

Great Scott! That driver should reconsider using 1.21 jigawatts again. I'd love to hear the real story behind this one. Repairs: (1) when it should be a simple job, prepare to change religions - several times; (2) one can never have enough tools; (3) when in doubt, hammer it in or out.

Oh the pain. I have felt it. My wife ran over a deer that was already Dead in the road. Said she could have swerved but didn’t think she needed too. Drove it back home with the Evap canister among other thing’s dragging on the ground . $600 later + all my labor. Hopefully she might swerve next time. But let’s be real she will probably roll it over trying to miss a squirrel

Hi Ray, hitting a hammer with another hammer is dangerous, I have had to take a young trainee soldier to hospital when a chunk of hammer flew into his face. This is because the faces are hardened and are liable to 'sought of' explode. I care about you and all that watches your channel.

I second that. In another life I used to be a line mechanic for Chevron. I witnessed a new hire do the same exact thing and the hammer being hit had a chip come off of it and go right into his cheek just below the eye. He got lucky he didn't lose the eye. The amount of blood that came out of such a small hole is amazing. It even nicked the bone. Please be careful folks. Save the eye patches for pirates. Gotta edit this so the crowd out there won't "why didn't you stop him" to me. I heard one clang and looked around in time to see the second swing and as I yelled the event unfolded.

I love the videos. At this stage of my life, I planned on being in the middle of a off frame restoration of something. Unfortunately, 12 back surgeries and other health issues have taken me out of the game. All my tools sit there and collect dust. Very disappointed in life right now, but I look back on all the people that I have used those tools to help, and they give me a warm comfort. By the way, safety, why are you wearing a ring while working. My uncle taught me many many decades ago to never ever wear a ring while doing mechanics work. He would always show me the burn mark on his ring finger caused by an electrical connection between the firewall and a contact with his finger in it. Gold is a very good conductor! Fortunately, he had water nearby and quickly cooled the finger and saved it. Plus my teaching mechanics for over 12 years for the US Air Force, we would have immediately become unqualified in our jobs if we started working on something, anything, with a ring on. This could have lead to major damage to a wonderful career, not counting loosing a finger! MSgt David R. Smyth, USAF, Ret.

Good advice on the ring. mine has worn the little arc pits smooth with 15 years of retirement. My wallet still shows the circle of carrying it 25 years after that minor lesson. What about offering your tools to an apprentice after checking with a trainer to find one who would benefit and might help others?

12 back surgeries...I can't imagine...I'm on my first when I was 25, 29 now and wondering how long it's going to hold up. I already can't work nearly as much as I want to because my back will start to lock up after a while and I have to stop. Keep on trucking, I guess...
