In aviation circles there's a saying "The takeoff is optional, but the landing is MANDATORY". It's not an issue of being able to pull a heavy load, you have to be able to control the vehicle, including stopping while doing so. Great review.

I know I'm late to the party, but I was waiting for this video! I wanted to say something about Ford's exhaust break system for towing when you made the previous video visiting the dealerships test driving the Dodge Ram vs the Ford...but I wanted to wait until you made a video of you actually towing with a Ford. True, I do favor Dodge products, "Even though I was raised in a Chevy family" but I like all badges, and in the end was not surprised by your conclusion. In all honesty...I know people are asking for you to review a Chevy or GMC but hear me out. Ford is about to release their F600! this July apparently. Basically an F-650 but with the pickup cab and front end, without having to run the oversized medium duty body. Best yet, it comes with a 4x4 option, High output allegedly, and the 10 speed!! If you can gets your hands on an F600 to test it would be awesome to see, because no one is talking about it! Not even Fast Lane Truck is covering it or evening mentioning it, and right now there's only 1 KZfaq video of a running example of an F600 and it's just the 7.3 gas. Overall it sounds like a review thats easy pickens/up for grabs, and would be really cool if you could beat FLT to the punch. Anyway, sorry for the long comment. Really enjoyed this one, and loved the collab you did. Keep it up, and looking forward to what's next.

Hey, both guys are on the top of my subscribed list, Awesome content! *CDL Loads = 450/5500, just the final drive ratio will help to slow ya down. My opinion is to put the Ram exhaust brake on the Ford rather than the Ford Trany on the Ram. Besides I think there is more than a common bolt pattern that gets an automatic transmission/engine pair to work well. Don’t sweat the Ford Trans Temp. I have a MB Sprinter that runs at Temps that would get you to call 911 and its normal. Hoping Ford and Ram are watching your important content and reading some of these comments, I would like to add that both Ram & especially Ford need to go with a tilt (F-650 style) front hood, one should be able to see the engine without pulling the cab. Hey Sam been watching your videos for awhile, and like you I’m a dodge guy, well more like a Cummins guy. I live in the Texas panhandle so no hills, but we do have wind like crazy. So I have a short story to share. Now this took place back in 06 so laws where different back then. I was hauling cattle for awhile in a 05 with a tune I cannot remember. Again going to remind y’all in Texas and in 06, but I was on a regular basis weight total 38k and some change and my 05 4x4 dully 5 speed and straight exhaust, that’s it. It would pull that load all day at 70 with no issues. I still think there is no better engine than a Cummins, so stick with what works, the 08. It’s pre emissions crap and you know it. If you need more power throw some bigger injectors in it and a compound turbo set up. As for more gears get you a gear vender then you would have a 12 speed, assuming your 08 is a 6 speed now. That’s my thought, like them or not just my thoughts. Pray God keeps blessing y’all!!

Just picked up a Texas pride 40ft goose and tow it with a 2015 f350 fx4 with airbags and I agree the exhaust break sucks big time and I won’t upgrade till they can compete with rams. I17 north heading up to flagstaff from Phoenix is one of the toughest hills I’ve ever driven and with a 20k load I’d be lucky to hit 34 miles per hour I’m thinking with a 30k load id be at 15 or less. Those hills are true proving grounds for any badge. Thanks for the videos keep them coming

Good to see someone being honest in the comparisons as a mechanic and a Ford fan it would of been interesting to see if you could of bought your super duty with the 6.7L or Cummins and the 10 speed. I have to agree that in stock tune the engine brake is weak but just putting a small tow tune on the Ford really wakes up the engine brake. In our area their is a lot of companies that use super duty for their work trucks and most agree engine brake from stock should be better. I think if you had a chance with trying a super duty with a tow tune that wakes up the engine brake you might have a different opinion. No matter it was another great video look forward to more.

Sam...F450 has bigger brakes, bigger rear axle shaft and lower gears. Also, the dodge video that took zero brake applications...not true. Garage Geek I have a 2019 ram 1500 when the cruise control is in the truck will apply the brakes to hold set speed. You can verify by setting the info screen to the electric brake screen and you can see how much brake is applied. So in my opinion TFL messed up when testing the ram going down hill. The truck was absolutely applying the brake in it’s own.

I am in the process of building my ultimate tow rig, 2005 3500 with nv5600, plan to add compounds and injectors to it. My goal is 500+ hp on my tow tune. My 08 has the factory vgt with the exhaust brake but it's an auto truck with a mild built 68rfe, good for towing but not as good with the heavy trailer as far as trusting the transmission. The 6.7 has so much more torque than the 5.9 though.

Exhaust Brake - 450 driver here, also often around 39k total, so the exhaust brake while ‘on’ (not automatic) seems to have four settings, not just one. If you just hit the button it doesn’t do much. Hold the brake with moderate pressure for maybe 3 seconds. Too quick won’t work. Listen, you can hear it spool up, I call this the second setting. Then wait maybe five seconds and repeat, get into third level. Listen for the increased sound. I think I can detect four settings, although the max one may only come on during slower speed high downward incline situations. Ford engineer may correct any of this but this seems to be how it works. Play with it again and see if you can engage at least the third setting coming down 8% grades at 55! Huge difference. As soon as it gets steep do the three or four second moderate brake application to engage next level. I don’t brake often, but definitely do. Going down 70 Co for example (The Gauntlet). If this is correct maybe this is better because it isn’t just on/off, it has settings you can manipulate with the brake pedal for situation. For fourth setting slow (7 mph) and steep it is extremely strong. Is it detecting angle? Maybe. Separate comment: if towing around 30k consider the 450. Better in high wind sway, braking of course and turning radius - good for jackknifing massive RV’s right into small slots for example. Controlling load critical - engines so good now very small trucks are often managing loads they can’t stop or maneuver well if something goes a little wrong in front or to the side if you.
@chrisbaskett52054 жыл бұрын
Oh, and just to add after getting into level 2 or 3 it is so strong if the descent isn’t steep it is too strong. To get out of that mode hit the accelerator lightly and it actually takes ten seconds or even more to get out of the mode. It holds for a while, takes a lot of light acceleration to get it back to level 1. Listening will tell you what mode it is in. Also, just to say, huge Cummins fan in general! Bad Cherry / Bad Robot / Bad Wolf
@chrisbaskett52053 жыл бұрын
Okay, so found out that what I was experiencing wasn’t engine brake alone, but only happens when engine brake is set to on. It basically engages the turbo engine brake and automatic aggressive downshifting. Between the two what I describe is correct.

Hi mate, just a quick point on engine brakes, i have 47 yrs experience in large trucks, and regardless of horse power different brand motors all retard differently. Cummins has always been strong, then GM,mack and caterpillar. The point is that Cummins will hold you at 45mph on a hill whereas mack might have to go down the hill at 40mph, cat at 38mph,etc. Also the gear ratio of the gear you are in will be slightly different as well. Perhaps if you came off the hill at 35 instead of 40mph could have been the difference between touching the service brakes or not. Also sometimes engine brakes work better with slightly less revs. A 2nd go down the hill at a lower starting speed would have been good, and might have surprised you. Keep on Truckin. Cheers from Digby in Perth western Australia

Regular 68RFE has slip and slide with powerglide (Torque Management) On really steep stuff, 20% plus it would heat badly up to 275 with the stock trans. With my ATS Stage 2 with Co Pilot the max I have seen is 192. Whole different trans and torque converter. And for me, show me the Ford 6.7 with 500000 miles that has towed heavy. Very nice of Tow Piglet Alex to let you test with your loads and your roads. Now the exhaust brake is the deal breaker. For those really steeps with my 2 wheel drive and the manual transfer case, I never have to touch the brakes. On the east exit from Yosemite, you get to do 11 miles of 8% downhill. There are two switchbacks. Just to be safe even though the turn sign said 30 mph, I did one small brake stab to go from 30 to 20. Did not really have to do that, could have downshifted but I am lazy. Be careful what you wish for. There is ZERO long term on that 10 speed tranny in the Ford. And maybe do yourself a favor and on one of your builds, drop in an ATS 68RFE. Totally different trans only the cases are used and those are reinforced. The ATS will hold double the torque of the Aisin.

I have a 2017 F350 4x4 XLT with extended cab 8ft bed 410 LS rear end. I haul consistently 20k on a 6500lb 38ft sliding axle trailer. The F350 has 86500 miles the transmission just was rebuilt do to running to hot consistently 275 degrees up Vermont hills 230 average, not good, shouldn't run hotter then 240 up any hill on an automatic transmission it will cook the plastic that's in them making the transmission useless. Other then that I'm impressed a 1 ton has done all that work 5 days a week to 80k before a automatic transmission overhaul. I'm getting a 2020 F550 single cab with a customized gooseneck bed with storage integrated into the sides, going to be way better in turning radius then the F350 which is horrible. I manage cause I've been hauling class 7and 8 trucks with 53ft trailers for 22 years in Boston/New England and NY. But doesn't mean it can't be done easier with less aggravation with a proper set up. So we'll see if this new F550 out does the F350, I'm banking it does. Stay safe 💯drivers ✌💛👊

As a die hard ford guy I’d have to agree that nothing beats a cummins engine brake. Been wanting ford to make an actual engine brake.

Awesome videos. Since you have tested Ram and Ford, you should try to get a GM and try the same load up the same hills. Even if your not a GM fan, I imagine it would be good for views. Keep up the awesome vids! Bad Cherry!

Bad Cherry? Well, up until about 27 minute mark, I was getting nervous fer all yer Dodges. I was gonna send you a check and take 'em all off yer hands. But then, you professed yer loyalty, and i thought, Damn, that was close! Welcome back to the fold.
