I noticed her on the Thames when I was last in London decades ago, but had no idea what she was, or about museum ships in general. I'm now sorry I made no attempt to see her, though there were one or two other things to see while in London. I haven't visited the submarine USS Cod here in Cleveland since I was a child, thogh, so HMS Belfast shouldn't feel left out. ;-)

I am partial to the County Class; something about the three funnels does it for me. Three funnels ships by that time looked very out of place but at the same time were beautiful. The Town class aren't half bad either.

Also, pressure from each projectile's wake will disturb its neighbor's flight. I'm told this was especially noticeable with battleship rounds--one reason for firing the center gun either just before or after the two outboard guns.

US ships used delay coils which meant the center gun fires slightly after the outer guns. Although I was of the understanding that the practice was to only fire half the guns per salvo at least until the target was found.

First off love the videos, in your videos you keep talking about the Washington and London Navy Treaties, I would love to hear the stories of both of them and how each nation, felt going in and coming out. What limitations were set in place, what designs were stopped or changed in order to fit the new treaties, would love a special video about them. I know this comment is a little late, but please do it.

That would be an excellent topic. I've read up on the Japanese perspective in some detail and I know some basics about a few of the others, and I know each nation had some specific points on their agenda going in. Plus, most discussions of the naval treaties focus primarily on the U.S., U.K., and Japan, so it would be interesting to hear something about France and Italy's perspectives.

Basically, the democracies followed the treaties they signed up to. The dictatorships didn’t. For instance the German “Hipper” class heavy cruisers were up to 4,000 tons heavier than they should have been.

Thank you very much for this, I have a thing for British cruisers stemming from my own family history. My great uncle served on HMS Edinburgh right up until she was sunk then served on HMS Newcastle for the remainder of the war. I have a plaque at home which commemorates a journey undertaken by HMS Newcastle from Newcastle in New South Wales Australia to Newcastle Upon Tyne in the U.K. Someone had the clever idea of taking a lump of coal on this journey so they could indeed say they had "taken coals to newcastle" which is a fairly well known but little used phrase these days and perhaps unfamiliar to some of your international fans if they should read this. I would like to know how these ships differed from the 'Crown Colony Class' however, HMS Jamaica, Kenya, Fiji and so on? These ships were quite similar I believe.

@@heelfliptodarkslide Who knows? Sadly my great uncle passed on back in 1990 and my knowledge of his war time career is at best third hand, HMS Newcastle served throughout World War II however and doubtless in that time had many crew changes. While that idea is enticing I suppose we will never know.

town and subvariants were in fact pretty nice ships. they could stand 1vs1 against the supposed better Mogami and Brooklyn but they could build more of them. Overall the extra numbers on the British ships allowed to keep a lot of hulls in the water, and at the end of the day the improved allied radar and FCS really maked up for the size gap like Scharnhorst experienced

The biggest difference between the Edinburgh's and the rest of the Town's was their range... The Edinburgh's carried an extra 500 t of fuel oil, increasing their range from 5,300 nmi to nearly 8,700 nmi. Officially this was to better protect Britain's overseas colonies, but of course that was because, for political reasons, the Admiralty wasn't allowed a commerce raider... Which the Edinburgh's were definitely not designed to be better at... (Wink, wink, nudge, nudge...)

@Kwolfx

I don't know if this story is accurate, but I've heard that an admiral on board the Edinburgh ordered the captain to get close to an ice pack so he could take some photographs of it. Now maybe there were polar bears on the ice pack, because I don't know what was so fascinating he needed to get a picture of a block of ice, but in any case the captain warned him that U-boats were known to hang out near the edge of the ice packs, but the admiral dismissed this warning and this is how the Edinburgh got torpedoed by U-456. Though it was a German destroyer which eventually finished the Edinburgh off later on. However, the Edinburgh got the equivalent of "It's just a flesh wound" in World of Warships by fatally wounding the German destroyer in return. The Edinburgh was carrying a huge amount of Russian gold at the time of her sinking; the equivalent of 64 million pounds in 2018. The gold was salvaged in the 1980's. The salvors visited the HMS Belfast and made careful measurements of the same compartments on her that were used to store the gold bars that were carried by the Edinburgh. At around 800 ft or 244 meters, I believe it is the deepest successful salvage ever attempted with human divers.

Thanks for the overview! My Dad served on the HMS Glasgow, He didn"t talk about it much but he did share a few horrific stories on occasion, One time someone was stuck in the boiler tubes after a cleaning....Big guy smallish tube , they got him out by rope he was pretty scuffed up But the worst part is they had 5 minutes to get him out because they where under attack and if unsuccessful they would have had to fire the boilers up anyway. My Dad was sea sick the entire tour. Would be nice to know the ship name of each photo . They also where torpedoed in the Mediterranean, if I recall correctly the Southampton replaced the Glasgow after the attack and met her demise....I have a few 2 X 2 photo's if you ever want to cover the Glasgow

Belfast is a good example of how much of factor luck is in determining which historic ships get preserved. The Imperial War Museum was looking to preserve one of the 6-inch triple turrets from a cruiser, and when they visited HMS Gambia (one of the other cruisers still in reserve) somebody suggested they should preserve the entire ship instead. But it turned out that Gambia was in rather poor condition, and Belfast was in the best shape of the surviving cruisers so she got selected instead. And then the government refused to pay for her preservation, and it was only because her last captain happened to be a Member of Parliament in 1970 that the Royal Navy even allowed her to be preserved with private funds.

I have a very simple question which is (I guess) difficult to answer: How good did the rivals of WW II know the capabilities of their opponent´s ship? Example: did the american ship x know that it had a zone of engagement where it was immune to shellfire from japanese ship y but had a decent chance of punching through its armour? In hindsight we know much more of course, but did they really know what their opponents where able to do? Armour layout, rof, caliber, shell performance? Did the Admiral of the Hood know what the Bismarck was capable? Battle of River Plate ... The near engagement of an Iowa battleship with Yamato ...

Drachinifel I have always wondered about a particular feature in the construction of the triple 6 inch gun turrets on these ships. What is the purpose of those triangular brackets attached to the front sloping face of each turret directly beneath each gun barrel? There is nothing like them on any other type of turrets that I have ever seen. It seems to be a common feature on every UK 6 inch gun turret. Do you know what its purpose is or what it is called? Thanks for your expertise. Great videos.

Hello, they are resting brackets for the guns, each has a hydraulic piston to prevent the guns depressing into the deck or the turret in front of it but allowing further depression up to a maximum value when broadside.

In 1940 there were design studies for post-treaty heavy cruisers with 3x3 8-inch guns, comparable to the US Navy's Baltimore-class. And even super-heavy cruisers with 3x3 or even 3x4 9.2-inch guns (it's unclear whether this would've been a new gun design, or the the old 9.2"/47 from WW1 armoured cruisers and coastal artillery batteries). During his time as First Lord of the Admiralty, Winston Churchill was the driving force behind the latter concept. But even without treaty limitations, Britain's shipbuilding capacity was finite and there was a large demand for both cruisers and destroyers to patrol their vast empire. The (nominally 8,500 ton) Crown Colony-class cruisers and the follow-up 8,800 ton Minotaur/Swiftsure-class could be built cheaper and in greater numbers than any post-treaty heavy cruiser, so that's what Britain went with. Toward the end of the war, the Royal Navy was looking to build 15,000 ton cruisers, but these would've still been "light" cruisers because they'd successfully developed a dual-purpose 6-inch gun, the QF 6 inch Mark N5. World of Warships players know those designs as Neptune and Minotaur, which were in fact the names the Royal Navy planned to use for them. But then the war ended and the Royal Navy no longer had the budget to afford them. Several of the turrets had already been built, though, so three incomplete Swiftsure-class cruisers were fitted with 2 turrets each as the Tiger-class.

Heavy cruisers had a problem of relatively slow rates of fire with a shell that’s not relatively terribly destructive. The thought was that in an engagement between a Town class and a heavy cruiser, they would normally aim to attack at night and so the range would be shorter and by the time the heavy had established the range of the light cruiser, the light would have blasted three times as many salvos and broadsides into the heavy.

USA and Russia, still have a few. I believe that the major combat vessels are the Nuclear Powered Submarines, Attack Aircraft Carriers, Destroyers, Frigates, Corvettes, Fast Attack Craft, Amphibious Assault Ships, Mine Warfare Vessels, and Stealth Counter Measure Vessels. The next war will not be fought like WWII. Merchant Fleets will be destroyed instantly, and those Countries that need them will Starve!!

Thanks for another great video I think these magnificent ships are all too often overlooked despite the sterling service they gave. Many people focus on the Japanese ships but don't do the research to find out just how blatantly the Japanese lied and broke the treaty's (during peacetime) with their ships being both well over the announced displacement as well as the 10,000 ton limit. The Mogami's announced at 8,500 tons were actually over 12,500 when finally fit for service and that was before any war. Despite all that, Japanese, German and Italian ships were lightly built to fit more guns, speed and armour but were to withstand either rough sea's or battle damage. Thick armour is great but ineffective if what it's attached to is weak and fragile. The Town's were tough and solidly constructed ships that were well able to handle rough weather and stood up to enemy action.

A real shame about the Gloucester. They served under a complete idiot of an admiral in their final action at Crete, who ordered them into range of the Luftwaffe when they were almost out of anti-aircraft ammunition. They ended up firing practice shells at the planes before they were hit and sunk. The navy then didn't send back any rescue ships under cover of darkness (as they normally would) and the majority of her crew were dead by morning.
@dubsy1026
@dubsy1026 5 жыл бұрын
Are you calling Cunningham an idiot? What actually happened was that the Admiralty was ordered to provide support at Crete. Hence the Gloucester had to go there when the landings happened. The reason for no rescue was the ships assigned had to go and bombard targets instead, which should give you an idea of how pressed bother the Med Fleet and the Army on Crete were. Realistically the best option would be to get out of Crete before in the first place, but a bit late for that.
@zarabada6125
@zarabada6125 4 жыл бұрын
@@dubsy1026 Your lack of understanding of the detail shows you shouldn't be arguing about this from a supposed position of authority. 1. No, not Cunningham. Cunningham was the Vice-Admiral in charge of the fleet. I meant the Rear Admiral in charge of the squadron, who ordered Gloucester from a position of relative safety off Crete into the range of the Luftwaffe. The Admiral had been sent details that Gloucester was dangerously low on ammunition but failed to send her back to Alexandria to rearm, as several other ships with a less desperate ammunition supply were ordered to. That Rear Admiral would be quietly moved to a desk job to prevent more mishaps; open criticism wouldn't be possible due to the risk of creating a propaganda coup for the enemy. 2. Being ordered to participate in a battle and wasting a very expensive ship (and 800 trained crew) on a suicide mission are two very different things. You can't correlate presence at Crete for a strategic battle with incompetent orders at a tactical level.

Most British warships of this period had an enclosed bridge, and in the case of Battleships, an armoured conning tower. However, they were hardly ever used due to the limited visibility of standing in an armoured box and so captains preferred to con their ships from the roof of the bridge- which the admiralty took into account in design stages essentially creating a closed bridge and an open bridge above. It was a strange situation, that eventually resulted in late war destroyers and frigates having no enclosed bridge at all.
