I moved to O'ahu at age 10, almost 11 (in 1985) and was taken straight to Sandy's by a neighbor. After getting drilled on 2 or 3 waves and having a bloody nose, the lifeguard came out and said, "You have no business here. Go to Waikiki, then Ala Moana, then Diamond Head and then you can come back after when you know what you're doing." By high school I was dawn-patrolling Sandy's on Saturday mornings. (Now I'm landlocked in the middle of the US and only get to watch waves on KZfaq.) Great review Zeke.

Discussing pecking orders = 10/10 content. Every other surfer avoids this. Thank you. All of us non-Hawaiian people are just curious about it to be honest. I live in Atlanta and we've never even surfed other than Florida a few times, so the whole thing is cool and interesting to us. All of the local how's, why's, and do's/don'ts are legitimately interesting. It'd be dope if on the super popular spots you'd tell us where you and the other famous surfers exist on the line up and whether or not you burn each other, etc.

Thanks Zeke for the review. Please allow me to add that courts has an expansive pecking order. The hoard of locals on the main peak has a website, charity drive, golf tournament, Christmas party, and summer BBQ. The numerous uncles (and aunties) out the back have 10-foot boards and surf 7 days/week. Now add 10 or 20 highly skilled and local SUPs that surf there every day, a niche of native Hawaiians, and a tight crew of talented shortboarders on the inside (especially if there is a bump). They all know each other, and they will know right away that you are a traveler. I’ve been surfing there nearly every day (April through October) since 1998, I am reasonably skilled, friendly, polite yet assertive, and even after 24 years I’m still quite junior. With the heavy crowds, I'm mostly getting scraps. Just for example, I’ve even seen locals violently ousted, chased out, humiliated, and forever banned for things like “calling off uncle” who went in front of them (OMG don't EVER do that!). As a transplant, it’s not my place to welcome or dissuade you as a traveler, nor will I pull the lame "I’ve been here longer” card. If you come to courts and you take turns, I will be honored to share my scraps with you. But I humbly recommend that you do not choose Honolulu as a summer surf trip destination. It’s packed and it’s local. You would have a more relaxing time by choosing Malibu for a surf trip. I would rent a board and paddle on out if you are here with the family or for other reasons, though. Best bet for all of Honolulu is 3rd shift after 11am when the retirees are done and everyone else is at work. Winds are often offshore all day, but wear sun protection.
@alexs5394
@alexs5394 2 жыл бұрын
i think his view may be slightly skewed because he is about as local as it gets. I'm sure he could paddle out at any spot on Oahu and get a ton of waves, whereas the experience of a visitor would be much different.

I really enjoyed the breakdown of the waves on different beaches, as well as the very nuanced rating system and explanation of the rules and factors. For the final segment, I especially appreciated the safety warnings on beach break waves for bodyboarders and bodysurfers. I'm both of those -- I would love to see a segment from you, or a guest on your channel, about what it took to be able to get enough experience and technique to do those beach break waves, and whether even experts still get hurt in those conditions. I think of the Hawaiian beach break bodysurf contests, which are amazing to those of us who fear beach break and won't go out in it. Understanding what is going on to not get injured would be great content.

Zeke, this video is so good and useful. I think the convention and visitor's bureau should hire you. I love surfing but mainly as a spectator. Sandy beach is my favorite spot to watch the Uncles having fun so effortlessly in waves that would injure others. The name I always heard it called was Break Neck Beach, I think it was well earned.
