It makes me laugh that so many people seem to think it's a 'risk' to change formation now. Do they not think it's a risk to stick with what we've seen so far? That's a MUCH bigger risk, IMO.

I dont think our formation has been the issue. The players chosen and the way they have been asked to play is the issue. So now we might have the wrong players in wrong positions, a new formation, and probably and forced to play caustiously and safe. Could well be even worse

It's the quarter finals of a major tournament, why not take a risk? If you take the risk and go out fighting, at least you tried. If it works out and you smash it, amazing.

Drop Kane for Watkins Kane and Toney are the same player. Drop Saka for Gordon Saka has been toothless on the right. May as well play someone like Gordon who is hungry, has balls and is good at tracking back.

England looked a lot more balanced with the 3-5-2 formation. It worked for us so many times before. The 4-2-3-1 is too narrow and everything goes through the central area which makes us extremely predictable.

Bigger question would be, how did this team get here. . Not having a first team LB and not one single proper LB back-up, Not one, and resorted to moving a RW to a LB.. Now missing a CB and everyone confused. No backup CB too ? wow. Who did Southgate called up .. Only midfielders and attackers ?

The complaint is that this should have been tested in the qualifiers/friendlies/nation league. Try out Mitchell, Hall, or Doughty Bring in Livarmento Try Toney and Watkins up front. Out Bellingham in the 8. You had all of these games to test these things out, you didn't, and now you're fucked.

hear me out. we should take our under 21s squad to major tournaments to play against the first team in training, can then play with different formations against an opponent to see what works best, and give the manager practice in adjusting his team and tactics during a game. would also give the first team manager a good way to get to know the under 21s better, for future squads

All this talk about bringing the under 21 squad etc is ridiculous. Please, can someone with at least a bit of knowledge of football make a sensible comment? Ffs🙄🤣🤣🤣🤣

People forget the genius move from Bobby Robson in 1990 We reverted to a sweeper system and that made us the best side in that world Cup. The best England side in my lifetime and the only time we really should have won the world Cup. That's a fact

Ricardo Rodriguez is one of the slowest players on the pitch, he's a great passer but he's not someone who'll run past people.

Gareth is ignoring the biggest problem in the team and that Foden playing on the left, we need a threat and some sort of overlap, Gordon is the only player who can do that

I would say we have not played well and something needs to change so formation is the obvious choice. This should enable Bellingham and Foden to play in their respective positions?

Changing the system is a MUST. It’s not working, and we looked far more comfortable in a back 3 in extra time the other night. We looked solid in 2018 in a back 3, and certainly have the personnel to do it. I disagree that Guehi not being available has caused this change; it would’ve happened anyways

Goldstein is starting to grate on me! Changing the dynamic in our shape, can only improve us! We have a team of professionals and can adapt to change, so we have to do it!

If we stick with our formation we will be pinned in all game, they have 2 number 10's who will not give Rice or Mainoo a second on the ball.. they only way we can compete is to switch it to 343

Okay so they mentioned the back 3 and 2 wings, but what about the other 5 positions? Rice, Mainoo Foden, Bellingham, Kane? Not bad but maybe Toney should be on for Foden.

Formation's have been 'versatile' for a long time. The WM formation, the Tottenham push and run, Hungary and the deep lying Centre Forward, Holland's total football, the invention of wing backs.....

As a swiss, Rodriguez is a good player bur for sure not the main man. Look out for Xhaka, Ndoye or Akanji.

Gordon on the Left , Olly nr.9 Cole palmer looked good on the right let Saka come on sevond half. Foden is nr 10 and Jude and Rice behind him. Joe Gomez at left, That Should be the formation the rest xhould be hard to pick up

They have to change. Southgate's formation was terrible with 5 players all trying to be 10s and a huge gap in the middle of the ground. They will get destroyed by Switzerland if they try it again.

In my opinion Southgate will change formation but stick with the same players bar Guehi (obviously). If we progress it will be down to substitutions IMO. His over loyalty borders on abject stupidity.

We need to go to a back 5 to try and compete with Switzerland, if we continue with the back 4 they will dismantle us because they play their system perfectly. Saka & Trent wingbacks, Mainoo & Rice holding with Foden, Bellingham & Kane in front is defo the way to go.
