I remember when my self care routine used to be one body lotion and one face cream. I was even using my body lotion on my face. Ever since I started doing the whole scrub, cleanser, serums thing my skin in now f$&ked up more than ever. Now I keep having to change products to correct the problems the previous products have caused.

@Queen-xq4dj I have had a similar experience when I was younger. I have VERY SENSITIVE SKIN and spent so much money trying to clear it up in the past with products. I now seem a dermatologist and aesthetician because I have no clue what I'm doing. I do understand this is a privilege to see my aesthetician for treatments and not a necessity so I'm am blesses and grateful. I hope you are able t find something that works well for your skin! I know how annoying this can be.

I’m not sure where she’s from based on her accent, but at least in America I feel like that’s because debt is so normalized. Everytime I use my credit card, I enter debt. It’s encouraged to enter debt to go to school. Most people won’t be able to buy a house or car without entering some sort of debt (a loan is a form of debt). So while I don’t know if she was raised in a similar environment, but at least for Americans, I completely understand why they don’t see stuff like afterpay as debt- it’s just like a credit card, and your parents needed those to get approved for a home loan, so what’s the big deal? (sarcasm, in case you didn’t realize, 740$ in afterpay is a big deal).
@aesinam
@aesinam 22 күн бұрын
@@neonradiusso true because outside the west (U.S especially), where credit cards are not really a thing, debt is mostly from loans and such so it's easier to see those as debts but when you're used to needing to have a credit card just to get a credit score to buy a house etc, it can be difficult to understand

DUDE this is why I don’t trust afterpay. I remember I started seeing it as an option and immediately distrusted. Like if I am going to go into debt over something… it’s going to be a large purchase like a car (and even then my ass is avoiding those luxury vehicles that put people in money pits 😭). I’m not gonna finance some name brand slides or some BPAL perfume cause if I don’t have the money for it then I don’t need it right now.

I think “self care” has really become a way of consumerism and overconsumption. My definition of self care is just that, things to take care of myself such as basic hygiene(toothpaste, body wash, shampoo, etc) and gym membership. When I buy these self care products they’re $20 max and I buy them every 3-4 months, only buy when I run out.

I agree. I had a period of not being able to delay gratification after a sudden death in my family - I took "buy it now, what if you're dead tomorrow" to the extreme. Luckily I went nuts on craft supplies that I still use today, and not perishable overpriced trend products. Still, not being able to wait for something or try out something else is really bad, because the next "what if..." is always right behind it.

Self-care has been twisted into a strategy to get people (often women) to buy things they don't need and weren't even thinking of buying. Really crazy how much these impulse purchases are usually the opposite of self-care in the end. Recently I'm also seeing the word "hygiene" being used in the titles of videos of this kind, while showcasing products that aren't even remotely necessary for basic hygiene. It's all manipulating people into feeling that splurging on this stuff is a good thing. PS: the girl in the video adding up the list for "the cost of being a hot girl" needs to realize that none of this is "the norm to get in your 20s". Most people in that age range don't have the disposable income to do that. I wish people like this would join the real world. Oh, and if your forehead slightly wrinkles when you move it, that means you're a normal young human, not that you "need" botox.

I recently found out that I don't need all that products that influencers are trying to sell us. I was shopping at mall, looking at clothes, haircare, skincare, makeup, perfumes, and thought "this makes no sense at all, it's all the same and I have these things at home already". Because who needs 10 th crop top which looks almost exactly the same? And who needs a thousands of different blushes, when an old eyeshadow palette does just fine? Why would I buy hundreds of skincare products, when my skin is not very problematic? It all just takes space.

Honestly, this is why me and my family shop at thrift stores for clothes. Sure, places like Goodwill don't have as much quality control, but there are plenty of places like Savers for example, that do. And you get those products cheaper than you would get them new. Especially, ESPECIALLY when it comes to kids clothing! I have a 1 and 2 year old, and we've never bought a new outfit for them, because the prices for new baby clothes is INSANE. You go to a used kids store, which we have 2 in our area, and the clothes are usually in like-new condition. Not shabby at all - again because of good quality control. People don't need to spend as much money on new things, as they think they do. And it certainly won't add to long-term happiness and fulfillment, because at the end of the day, it's just stuff.

Self care is so much more than physical care. Ultimately if you are stressing yourself out by trying to fit in your everything shower into your schedule, or stressing yourself out from the financial situation you’re putting yourself in due to the self care, you are not truly caring for yourself. A lot of us need to invest in therapy, meditation, and prioritizing peace.

Y’all ever notice how things that are considered “self-care“ are just normal things that people should be doing as part of their daily lives? Grocery shopping for healthier foods and cooking at home, going for a walk, socializing with family and friends, dedicating time to hobbies and passions that you like. Modern society treats self care as a luxury and not as something that is vital to our well being. The better we take care of ourselves the better we can take care of those around us.

The idea of self care being tied to consumption has such a strong tie to the idea that you can buy a persona. Like, its no longer a slow roll of building up your likes and dislikes, its micro trends, destash, haul, restock, destash over and over, fast paced as hell with the rise and fall of different aesthetics. They both rely on insecurity to drive sales on the newest shiniest thing, make sure to use their promo code! Its so draining emotionally and financially, but then it sucks you in by promising to remedy that with an even newer and shinier product.

Self care to me is taking my epilepsy meds and making sure I eat daily and having a decent sleep schedule 😂 I’ve always had a decent skincare routine since I was a teen in the 00’s to keep my eczema under control and I keep saying it’s INSANE to me that people think 20 different face oils and supplements is ‘self care’ and I see the constant shorts and they remind me SOOO much of the used car salesmen that you mentioned that my dad always warned me about and oh boy does the finger tapping annoy me 🙈🙈 love your videos, can’t believe I’m this early haha

Unfollowing anyone that tells me that something is life changing or that I "need" something - is my own self care. I run my life, I control what I view online. I would rather buy groceries and meaningful things that bring me happiness (traveling without using debt, journaling, painting, dancing). That is self care. Do not fall for the crap online, use your head, use your own judgement.

i always go back to maslow's hierarchy of needs. at the top we have self-actualization, and that's what i've been striving to achieve in the past few years. maybe it's through therapy, but i've learned that what self-care truly means for me is discovering who i really am as a person and doing things that make me feel better mentally: making art, journaling, connecting with my ethnic roots, reading. even with all the struggles i have, i've found that self-actualization is what has made me happier than every purchase ever has.

the people who are like ' how did I spend $$700 at sephora??' Do they need to learn self-control? I'm hoping it's an act really. I think the term self-care is losing meaning. I never really saw all of this as self-care, only as overconsumption. Going on a nice walk, I'd like to take someone's dog with me self-care. Taking an Epsom salt bath with 1 candle and meditation music playing, self-care. Bringing a charcuterie board, bottle of wine, 30 candles, and two movies, excuse me what? I like baths but, not bath bombs, and sitting in the bath too long is bad for your skin.

I recently got an offer for free shipping on a product and was ecstatic and immediately went to my cart and filled it up. Old me would've hit the checkout tab and went on about my day. Luckily reformed me has decided that I am going to use that offer for the one item I initially wanted but couldn't find at the store and didn't want to pay shipping for. I always leave this comment on these types of videos and so I'll say it again: anyone who knows anything about psychology or therapy would know that self-care contains at least four parts and only one of them is the physical element of it, and at the same time, that physical element of it is not having every smell of the same soap, it is genuinely taken care of yourself in a way that is needed or relevant or Etc. Great video. I've been operating on the mindset of I'm generally miserable so buy a little treat, a reward at the end of the week. I then lost everything I owned and justified excessive spending with well I meed to replace. But ultimately none of it was making me happier, the new skincare item didn't work any miracles, the expensive pretty shampoo from japan nothing more than any other I've used. And I look back and see money spent. Thousands that could have probably bought me my own home, a major need now. I see my path but everything is honestly so fucking depressing it's hard to stick to.

The idea of buying and using 17 beauty products as an act of self-care is insane. Like sure if your skin is THAT bad, but like her skin just looked slightly irritated. The only cost I have for myself is my nails. I would love to do them on my own one day, just because I like doing things for myself, but as a single mom not needing to do anything at all for like two hours and focusing only on myself during that time is vital for my mental health. What I do as a form of self-care is create. Like making a bracelet for myself, or even editing my stories. If I don't get out my creativity somehow it ends up making me sad and depressed.

It became an obsession. I had a ton of products. If I didn’t do my routines I would feel so guilty. Even though they would just stress me out more because of my how busy I was. Eventually I got help tho and I’m better now. The products never made the sadness go away. I was only 14 at the time and still figuring out who I was (still am tbh). I looked up to the people I saw online, because their lives were so much better. I still have a busy schedule, but I have found a few ways to cope. i am so grateful i found your channel! i grew up watching my mothers horrible spending habits & eventually adopted them, now in my 20s i am realizing how detrimental my habits could become and am working towards becoming more financially responsible. social media completely sets me back sometimes but your commentary is LITERALLY a breath of fresh air than what is normally pushed onto us!! you are amazing & deserve every ounce of support you get!! ❤

Im on a long road towards learning what self care actually looks like in my life and slowly developing the capacity to care for myself in ways that will pay off in the long term. Growing up I was not taught how to care for myself properly and overspending, overconsumption and accruing debt were all normalized. Videos like yours help me to feel less lonely on this journey and remind me that I'm on the right path. I'm nowhere near perfect and I still struggle with overspending but making progress. Thank you for bringing all of your thoughts to this platform and helping us all see more clearly ❤

Self-care can look different for different people. However, self-care is not over consumption. As a woman you need to find the routine and the products that work best for you and just stick to them. You need to keep yourself HEALTHY and clean. Take good care of your meals, oral and body hygiene, move your body regularly, read books , listen to music and honestly - that’s it! Nothing wrong with having a self-care routine as long as it’s only the products you need for mantaining a healthy skin, not some random serums.😭

I had a slight problem with overbuying skin care products. at the beginning of this year I made a promise to myself that I was going to use all my skin care that I have before I purchase anymore. The only thing that I was able to spend a little bit on was sunscreen. I had hundreds of facial masks and now I'm down to about three boxes. So proud of myself for using what I have first.

I love that you mentioned this, I learned the proper meaning of self-care in my college guide class course, which meant self-care means managing lifestyle in a healthy positive way that reflects it onto others, being organized, eating healthy, admiring the little things in life ( a tree blossoming) or nature in general, managing finances to lower debts and create more savings, cutting ties with people who aren’t good for you spiritually, mentally, and emotionally is also a part of self-care, which is something I’ve also done in managing my self- care, my class discussed this along with having a growth mindset to get through difficult classes-- I utilize what I have learned every day, and it’s helped me tremendously. Also, I am a minimalist 😊. Hollywood beauty oils in the 2oz bottles that are $3.99 make a great face serum, and doctor bronners Castile soap gives me soft skin when I use it with a bath sponge, I also use the soap in a spray bottle to kill fire ants. And witch hazel is a toner--no need to buy toners for $46. My witch hazel by Dickinson is $4.99.

Some of those skin care products from Sephora cost a lot of money, and can damage your skin. This over consumption is a major problem. I agree, people buying these skin care products doesn’t pay your bills. It’s only materialistic things. I work, and I don’t go out and spend a ton of money.

The amount of self care steps for facial routine is baffling. The only barrier you are destroying is your skin. These facial products make it so that you have to go back for more. They ruin your face permanently for this reason.

Thank you for talking so much sense! Re make-up and skin care: I have bought a lot of products, so I am using them up and try to enjoy the things I have. A lot of make-up products last a super-long time. No need to buy more. And yes, it’s a satisfactory feeling, but very short-lived.

I love this video! Recently I realised that I’ve subconsciously started buying more and more stuff (mostly skincare and makeup), not in a concerning amount but still I realised that those products I bought three months ago are not even 1/3 used and most of the time I don’t see myself reaching for them. I also had a list in my note of all the skincare I wanted to try and some of them were really expensive (I try to really manage my finances cause I’m a student and I don’t have infinite money so thank god I didn’t buy those). The point is I finally understood that I was just wasting my money and good products, I stopped buying new stuff and I deleted that note (and I’m trying to stay less on social media). Now the rule is that I have to finish the product I already have before buying new ones! If you are struggling keep watching these videos, they will give you a dose of reality

I also want to bring up the concept of race and self care. Women, especially black and indian, have struggled with being called gross or disgusting due to western ideologies. Its affected the way I've grown up because I am so worried about being called the smelly indian girl or the indian girl that stinks. Its become more of an obsession over others opinions on me and a need for constant validation by purchasing something. I’ve realized that I don't need an extensive skincare routine or a 10 stop body care routine to be clean. And finding beauty in your race will be more important then focusing on the flaws.

Women on the whole are told they stink. Look at all the “feminine hygiene” products. As if our privates are supposed to smell like sunshine and apples. 😂🙄

Thank you so much for this video! I feel like even “self care” influencers who push you to live a better life somewhat trick their viewers as well, by telling them to live through certain routines that only influencers without an actual nine to five job can accomplish. Many people don’t have the time and money to live out these extravagant and privileged routines and find themselves unhappy. When stressed, they try to buy products in order to compensate for being unable to fulfill these unrealistic routines. This video I feel like is very truthful, and more scientific on a physiological basis. Self care isn’t the money you spend, how your body looks or the clothes you have. Self care is much more mental. And if you truly do want to have a better look on the outside, start on the inside and work outwards. I feel like the people many are drawn toward are both beautiful in and out.
