In 1995, Disney released "A Goofy Movie" which followed the character Goofy as he embarks on a cross-country road trip with his son, Max. Along the way, they encounter various challenges and adventures, including a run-in with Bigfoot.
This vacation is Max's worst nightmare, and it couldn't have happened at a worse time- his original plan was to escort his dream date Roxanne to her friend Stacey's end-of-year-party to see a Powerline concert in Los Angeles.
The film was a minor box office success and praised for its heartwarming father-son story and catchy soundtrack including the Powerline songs i2i and Stand Out. It also spawned a sequel, "An Extremely Goofy Movie," in 2000. To this day, "A Goofy Movie" remains a beloved classic among Disney fans.
The behind the scenes drama at Disney involving Katzenberg, Eisner and Wells caused some release problems but A Goofy Movie quickly found an audience on it's way to becoming a true Disney classic.

As someone who said that as a kid before I realize I was on the spectrum, that line tore me up hearing a character I related to as a child just out loud say that. I’m glad more media covers deeper topics for kids these days so they can explore themselves. Only having this line and then Monsters University when I was 13 or so was barely enough.

I agree. I also feel Turning Red is a spiritual successor to A Goofy Movie. Similar themes and plot hooks, while still being it's own thing.

I was listening to "Eye to Eye" and "Stand Out" just today, in fact, all these years later. The dynamic between Max and Goofy resonated with me then, when I was in junior high, as it does now as an adult. These days, I spend a lot of time with my dad since I'm not going to have him forever, you know? This movie also just encapsulates the 90's for me, a decade I hold in high regard.

When Rob Paulsen was interviewing Jason Marsden on his podcast: Marsden used some dialogue Pete and Goofy said during the hot tub scene to bounce off his own feelings about parenthood; that one of the ultimate goals of fatherhood is to have a child who both loves and respects you. In the movie, Max and PJ regard their fathers with one of these qualities but not the other and that's a major source of friction in the relationships they have with them.

@@DuskusCB I'd argue it's a mix of both. If a child does not have any sense of fear of being disapproved by his or her parents, then it's hard to build the necessary respect to have a functioning parent-child relationship. That said, Pete in the movie does not have a balanced approach, thus making it more about fear than genuine respect. Goofy on the other hand gets zero respect from Max but is more loved as a result. Neither are really perfect parents, but it's definitely easier to sympathize with Goofy than with Pete, even though Pete does have a point. In the end Max and Goofy reconcile after talking things out and Max finally sees his father with genuine respect by absorbing the things he was taught during the course of the story. It's why the story works so well. Max actually has to grow by learning to respect his father while Goofy has to work on becoming a more balanced in his parenting.

Best underrated Disney movie, if you couldn't relate to it you weren't human! But side note this movie spoke me as African-American kid who didn't grow up with a two parent home. My mom had been my rock and seeing this movie really made me want to know my father. And find out a way to be closer to him and build that relationship. No matter if you don't see EYE TO EYE with your parents, they want to STAND OUT to better then them.

I'm so jealous of anyone who got to experience this movie in theaters when it came out. I'm 18 and I found this movie in middle school and was obsessed with it for months, I would watch it constantly and had pretty much every song memorized. Still one of my favorite movies today and I'm glad it's getting the recognition it deserves. I definitely recommend watching the D23 panel, watching Jason and Bill sing on the open road together when they didn't during production was so amazing to see!

One reason why this movie became a huge cult classic is that you completely understood the perspectives of Max and Goofy and take either side. Yet you could also recognize both of them needed to be much better at communicating. It’s also one of the Disney movies that doesn’t have a villain that works. It’s just a great portrayal of a father-son relationship.

My parents got the movie for me on VHS for my birthday. I was a big fan of Goofy already but somehow had never heard of it until that moment. When I came down with the flu a few weeks later, I decided to watch this movie to pass the time, and it transformed my life. I think I ended up watching that VHS over 200 times before it wore out, and after that I had the entire thing memorized, songs included. I even developed the ability to talk in Goofy's voice, something that I can still do today. It was also helpful in repairing my relationship with my father, who also had a penchant for stuffing the family into a car and taking long road trips.

I love the contrast between goofy and Max’s relationship and pete and pj’s. While max will always be frustrated by goofy’s antics and clumsiness the two of them love each other and will always be close. On the other hand Pete and pj’s relationship is built on Pete bullying and intimidating pj. My guess is as soon as pj graduates college, starts a career and gets married Pete will probably only see him on the holidays at best.

Bill Farmer's performance in this movie is the shining example I always use when I see Hollywood stunt cast in place of an established voice actor for an existing character. People will say, "That voice wouldn't work for a whole movie," to which I just point aggressively at Farmer's legendary performance in this film, full of so much emotion and authenticity. Trust a voice actor to ACT with their VOICE. Lookin' at you, Mario. Also: Katzenberg originally wanted Steve Martin as Goofy before going back to Farmer, to remind you how tone-deaf he was.

@@anionleader you also have to factor in the number of games Mario is in. he may not talk much in one, but you gotta imagine he's either in that booth multiple times a year or in one long marathon recording session. Plus Martinet got through some fairly dense dialogue in Skyrim. I don't doubt he could handle a movie.

I remember seeing this in theaters in 1995 with my dad and two sisters and thinking powerline was sooo cool. As a young boy around Max's age, the movie resonated with me. What could I do to 'stand out' above the crowd? Loved it then, and still think it's a classic today.

I was 10 when this movie came out. Growing up with adhd (undiagnosed at the time) I was labeled as goofy or weird by my classmates. Trying to escape that stigma is what helped me relate to max, and for a while this was my favorite movie.

I was working in a small theater when this came out. Box Office, concessions, even learned how to run the old platter projectors. The final concert scene was truly impressive on the big screen.

I recently rewatched both movies and find myself agreeing with Kevin Lima, that the big reason for the movie gaining the following that it has is because of the emotional heft, that relatability of at some point wanting to disconnect from one's parents but eventually realizing they were just doing their best to do right by you.

I used to watch this move at the start of every summer break for years. As someone who grew up with just my mom, I loved that they showed a single parent family in a positive light without the typical narrative about how terrible it must be. Goofy and Max solved their problems through communication, which my mom also emphasized instead of spanking or other punishments. And the music slaps.

I want a third film in this series. Here's how I imagine it... Max has his own child, a daughter the same age as he was in the television series. She thinks her dad is lame, but idolizes her grandfather, to Max's frustration. Meanwhile, an adult PJ is grappling with the reality that he can never quite escape the shadow of his father. Also, we finally learn what happened to Peg and Pistol.

I2I was a "must have" song for our wedding DJ's set list with Stand out added if he could squeeze it. Movie was a massive impact on my teenage years after losing my mother and remembering that my dad was doing his best to connect with me any way he could.

I still listen to Eye2Eye once in awhile, my favorite part being "Dad, do the perfect cast!" I'm not a dad but my Dad was a fisherman, so I could sort of relate to that. Also had a crush on Roxanne, and felt the least guilt about that due to her looking very nearly human. A far cry from my crush on Lola Bunny.

I used to watch this movie while sleeping over at a friends house. It was two brothers who didn't have a lot - we'd go to the grocery store and I'd buy everyone a bunch of bags of candy. (The younger brother would also pick out some Circus Peanuts for his dad, to try to help him quit smoking.) We'd stay up late playing Tekken 3 and watching Goofy Movie, as well as other timeless classics like Clerks and blurry channels 98/99. Flash forward to today, and their dad has since passed, and the older brother recently passed unexpectedly as well. I think a lot about those times lately, and this movie is burned right into the heart of all those memories.

We have to thank Katzenberg for so much of Disney’s critical success in animation during the 90s. He’s also the guy who personally went behind Eisner’s back, and encouraged the development and re-pitching of “Gargoyles” to Eisner with some more depth and mature drama. There’s a reason Dreamworks went on to have a number of successes, and the reason Disney animation tanked after the in-fighting for recognition between Eisner, Katzenberg, and Roy Disney.

I remember watching this movie in theaters here in Sweden actually, so I suppose I must have been part of that small limited run- I did like the show, so maybe I pushed for the family to see it... and yet my biggest memory at the time was how scary it was seeing Max grow giant in that dream sequence at the start. VHS rewatches felt like it did more to show me its charms.

When I was a child, I loved this movie. It's great for kids for it made me emphasize with my Dad more. Working a thankless job trying his best to give us good experiences that we can take with us for the rest of our lives. It made me feel greatful that I got to do stuff with my dad. I went crabbing with my dad the week before I watched it at my grandmother's, and while it may have been boring but I could tell that my dad didn't have a lot of money, so it was just something for me and my siblings to do. At least the crabs were tasty. So happy my dad is retiring in 2 years. Recently, my 2 year old randomly discovered this movie on Disney plus, and it's been a reminder that I need to bond with her and do my best for her and her little brother. I'm so thankful my Dad did what he could with what he had. I can't think of any Disney that made me appreciate my family more than this one has, especially recently.

This year (2022), there was a special appearance of Max as Powerline before the parade each night of the special ticketed event, Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party at Walt Disney World. Max is a rare character that isn't seen in the parks very often, let alone in his Powerline costume, so many people were very excited by this addition.

Amusingly, if viewed through the lense of the usual archtypes and tropes of Disney cartoon movies, in this one Goofy is the Villain... and Max is the Princess.

It's amusing how meddlesome executives can get with legacy characters like Goofy. Katzenberg wanting to drop the "goofy" voice would repeat itself decades later when some at the studio wanted to drop the "duck" voice from Donald for the DuckTales reboot. And just as it did with Goofy, it had to go all the way up to the top executive at the company before sanity was restored and Donald Duck was allowed to just be Donald Duck as we all knew and loved him.

(although, maybe the editing should have placed the info about the "blackest movie" articles *after* mentioning the Atlanta ep? I dunno, seems like it might have flowed better that way...) Funnily enough, I was just rewatching The Phantom Menace, and it really struck me how much Jar Jar Binks essentially IS Goofy, from the walk, the clumsy good luck, the general cheerful good-naturedness...and he ALSO was accused of being a negative racial stereotype (far more so than Goofy has been, tho)!

I'll never look at this movie the same way again after watching that episode of Atlanta. it was a masterpiece

My five year old loves this movie. We watch it everyday multiple times a day. We also got shirts for Christmas mine has Goofy on it saying Goofy Dad and his has Max says Goofy Son. I took pictures of us wearing it. But yeah I use to watch it all the time when it first came out. And it's just crazy my five year old watched it all the time I even bought a shirt that has the scene from Goofy sticking through the roof saying Goofiest Dad. But yeah he also carries a stuff Goofy. I even showed the director the pictures and told him on Twitter. He actually replied he seems like a really nice guy.

Saw this as a teenager and completely identified with Max wanting to blaze his trail. Now I’m a parent and I completely identify with Goofy just wanting be allowed to watch the ride. This movie was excellent when it was released and is better now.

I literally had this movie memorized as a kid. Seriously I remember laying in bed and replaying it in my head line for line as I fell asleep. I was a weird kid.

Not going to lie, A Goofy Movie accidentally gave me an appreciation for the Bee Gees’ song “Staying Alive.” Yes, it’s because it inspired a Bigfoot to do a Saturday Night Fever moment. But I did find A Goofy Movie to be an enjoyable, underrated (at the time) film.

The single most quotable movie in my life. I can’t tell you how many times I say “I wish that this was the day after today”. I watched this movie ever year on the last day of school and it is on my list of favorite movies of all time. I also got the board game earlier this year.

I loved this movie. The music was amazing (I still listen to it occasionally). The ending concert stands out as one of the best endings. The story was so perfect. As a teen I connected with Max. As a father of two boys now, I connect with Goofy.

Yeah, I feel this might be the strongest part of the movie- it ages with you, makes you embarrassed about your past self, and makes you connect with every character at different parts of your life.

I worked at a movie theater in the center of Boston in 1995, and The Goofy Movie just appeared quietly in our smallest house one day with no advertising, no Disney promotional fanfare, no heads-up. Everyone at the theater loved it and re-watched it over and over. We were all mystified that it hadn't been heavily promoted, and now I know why.

Great job as always folks! I grew up with shows like Ducktales, Goof Troop and the entire Disney Afternoon lineup. You make this fan extremely proud and ty again. Ty for letting me suggest topics. I remember you did videos about Batman: TAS and Mask of The Phantasm. Was wondering if I could suggest a video based on Superman: The Animated Series and also one about the phenomenon called Pokemon and how it changed Kids’ WB! I think those would be awesome and ty again. Keep up the awesome work and this video and the James Bond Jr. one are two of my favorites of 2022!

Huh, it's pretty amazing that this movie came out at all. I'm glad it did as it's one of my favorite Disney movies of all time. Other movies can be good and fun to watch, but this is the movie that connects with people in a way that most other movies can't and it probably helped save some father/son relationships out there too.
