I have to agree on all three areas. I have rebuilt many 3.0's and all of them with blown head gaskets with cross over pipes. They all did show signs of excessive heat at the head gasket and the #6 connecting rod is usually burnt black and bearing spun. I would have to say the heat from the crossover does damage the engine. I constantly try to tell people not to remove the EGR. The EGR is meant to cool the combustion chamber. Also the all aluminum 3 core radiators work really well for cooling.One thing he missed is to change the antifreeze every 2 years like clockwork to keep the aluminum heads from oxidizing away.

Appreciate your input on these old trucks. Recently got hold of a 1990 with 230,000 miles. Will be doing timing belt and valve check pretty soon. Motor isn't breaking quarter mile records but doesn't feel gutless by any means, so hopefully the valves are still in good shape. Phoenix summer is coming up, oh boy.

I also live in Phoenix and bought a 90 with the 3.0. And 220k miles. The gaskets are blown so I decided to just buy the master rebuild kit from LCE Engineering for like $600 and I’m about to order both of the heads from them also in order to once in for all just get it all done right and make it last a lot longer. I off road by myself or with my kids in the Az desert quite often and I really need a reliable engine out there. So far I really love the 90 and I can’t wait to get it on the trails. 🤘 Good luck to you guys.

I have just started down this rabbit hole 25 thousand klms since a top end rebuild now she’s dropped psi in number six all others pushing 250 psi so fingers crossed it’s not terminal but will see

How is it going? I did head gaskets on my 92 3vze 4 1/2 years ago. Head gasket blew today. Debating on fixing it again. Last time was a nightmare. The bolts on the crossover pipe were a pain. I torqued the new head bolts down, turned around and the crossover pipe was still laying on the bench. I had to cut off the heat shield from around it and hammer som clearance on the firewall to get it down in place. Leave the crossover pipe lay on the back of motor.

On a radiator with some pinhole leaks, mine in my '92 has had some since I bought it, 19 years ago. I've added 90k to it, now at just 187k. The leaks were so small that I've occasionally put some epoxy on them, but otherwise just get a tiny bit of residue on top of the radiator after running it over the mountain. It's something to watch, and I'd replace it if planning to drive across the country. But these days it's just my ski and trail work rig, and last year I only added 500 miles to it, so a timing belt and new plugs are higher on the list.

I hear ya. Just for anyone else reading. The risk is the old metal just cracking or even blowing a hole in itself while driving. Fast coolant loss isn't ideal. So yeah, definitely situational. But with the head gasket risk, a new rad is cheap insurance.

I used a 3 core brass and copper radiator with thicker tanks. I blew up a plastic and aluminum one because I had air in the cooling system until I bought the no spill funnel. It was $270 but I think the best one available for longevity plus I've heard the all aluminum ones cool well but only last a few years. I just did timing belt and everything all new front of motor and runs sweet now. The crankshaft keyway wallerd out to about a half inch gap and the timing was jumping around so new dampener and crank pulley. Oh and the dampener bolt was finger tight. I just traded one of my Corvettes for it and got it going and am having fun with it.

My 3 core radiator was removed by me, I took it on two occasions to have cleaned out or leaks fixed. It lasted 32 years, its brass or copper. . So I have a new one now. cools better. Its not aluminum

just got a 2nd gen 160k manual 4x4 mint interior, frame, engine bay....i was told some stuff was done but i never turst anyone selling anything...i appreciate your videos because there seems to be alot of "interesting" information out there...I paid 3k and in this used car market was the perfect weekend car for the dogs...I didnt want another jeep and I have a 5th gen to take me to the parts store...several friend have bashed the 3.0 only one of them being a real mechanic and he only bashed the engines accessibility in relation to a head gasket job...

I bought a super clean 95 4runner 4x4 autoV6 burnt exhaust valve on #1 getting ready to pull the heads. Got a super nice 90 min extcab 4x4 V6 auto pickup too I love em both..250k on both.

Agile, thank you for all the videos on the 2nd gen 4Runner and 3VZE motor. I just bought 2 non-running 1995 SR5 4Runners so I'm looking forward to working on them. One of them has 235,000 miles on it and I actually got it started, only briefly, but I intend on changing all fluids and filters, spark plugs and seeing where I am to start. I also got a new 3 core radiator and will probably get an auxiliary/primary electric fan to install when I drain the engine coolant. I also checked the VIN for outstanding recalls and did not see any head gasket recall outstanding. Think I'm safe if I keep the motor cool? However, in preparation for the future, I've been looking for lift kits, bumpers, etc. and it seems like the 2nd gen has been left behind. Very few suppliers. Can some of the 3rd gen accessories (bumpers, sliders, suspension) work on the 2nd gen? I've checked out your products page and even Addicted is limited. Looking forward to getting one of these out in the trail. Thanks again.

Sure glad you set things straight on the 3.0 I've saw so much bad stuff I was kinda scared to put any more money in my 89 DLX 4x4 3.0 engine 5speed bought it not runnin not sure believe possibly jumped time but have no compression on 3 5 and 6 cylinders never had 3.0 only 22r hopefully I can get it goin. Compression can be bad valve timing. Your timing belt might have jumped on one of the cams. It's a non interference motor so no damage done if this is the case.

@@AgileWoodsman OK thanks. Had crank on TDC the right side was 3 notches past mark left was6 notches past mark. I pulled the belt put cams on marks put belt back on cranked it over still no compression on same three cylinders. I suppose I'm gonna have to pull the heads. Never worked on one of these 3.0 engine

Thanks for Ur Video sir .. I have a 3VZE Toyota Surf 3.0 matic 4x4 ‘95 but in my country toyota Surf isn’t common car (just few in Indonesia), the common cars just look like Surf are LC and Prado.. An old auto parts guy today said I should wrap that exhaust on the passenger side with some insulation to keep heat away from that cylinder. What say you?

Yeah I've heard of guys doing that. Sounds like a good idea to me. Can't hurt, and just might help. It'd a tight squeeze to get in there though.

What are your thoughts on valve adjust on these? My T100 valve covers are leaking and I can do that job myself but I know adjusting the valves is more art than science. I have around 112K on this engine. Thanks!

Yeah there are several schools of thought. Some people stick to the factory recommendations, and others never bother. For me I tend to not worry about it too much unless there is an issue. Or If I have the valve covers off I'd do it while I'm in there. But yes, there is a lot of voodoo involved! haha

Just did a head gasket on my 3.0…… it’s got some pretty decent mileage and so far it’s been really good….. however I put a felpro gasket on! How much time do you think it will last me ?

@@moejr14 well I was 15 when I did it and it was probably a 3-4 difficulty, BUT PLEASE buy a Haynes manual with some liquid wrench and Spray everything days before. It will save your life. But you have to be organized you have to take basically everything out of the engine.

@@moejr14 the only special tools you need is a Toyota cam gear puller and a impact with 130+ psi for the harmonic balancer. And a torque wrench…. EVERYTHING has a torque spec so always be checking that before putting things on.

@@ridebc153 I think you'll be fine man. If you did this job you know enough on how to take care of it well. Also sneaky tip, you can get away without an impact on the harmonic balancer by using a breaker bar propped against the frame and bumping the starter motor :D

I’ve seen some with aftermarket aluminum radiators and electric fans - does this help keeping it cool? Also I live in Phoenix, maybe I should just take the thermostat out entirely?

I wouldn't take out the thermostat. It can run too cool or take a long time to warm up, sludging up your motor. Where I am we have 2 months 100 to 115. A proper cooling system should handle it. As far as rhe rad goes, I suggest oem style myself. But your idea might work. I can't say though, ice never tried it. Good luck!

I think red, but myself and almost everyone I know runs green. No reason other than it seems years ago most got switched to green. And it's been fine. So run what you got.

Hello! I have a 1990 pickup with the 3.0 v6. I bought it new and have had little problems! I also have had the gasket failure and had the valves done. My problem now is low idle and can’t adjust it because the throttle body is not working properly. Unfortunately you can’t find a replacement because nobody makes them. I could look in junkyards but all of them are 30+ years old. My question is: can I rebuild mine or I should say find someone who knows how?

KZfaq search "4Runner SR5, 22RE, "A/C-VSV Idle Up Problems Fix/Mod" some of this is similar to the 3.0... and inspect every inch of Mass Airflow tubing and large hoses, and PCV valve check that if functional. see if helps...

Ow wow!! What an amazing rig! Great buy! Yeah man, change all the fluids, do a good tune up, and change the timing belt. Then go from there if she needs anything else. Check belts and hoses. Grease up the chassis really good too. Give everything a good look over. Steering tight. CV axles and boots in good shape, etc. If the radiator is original, I'd change that too.

What engine would you use for a swap? 92 3vze sr5 pickup 4wd automatic. Mechanic says cylinders on rd side are 190 cylinders on left are 140. Top end on both sides rebuilt at machine shop 3k ago Help

Oh man, that's rough luck. I don't know why so many engine rebuilders suck these days. If you can get away with it where you live I'd do the 3.4 out of then3rd gen for sure. Also, more rare, the 4 banger from those years is solid too, and chain timing so no more dumb timing belt changing. Good luck man! Let us know what you decide!

Just got A 91’ runner with 138k, only 500 miles on the rebuilt engine. So many things have been replaced, fuel pump/filter, plugs/wires, cap/rotor, injectors, battery, air sensor, tps(and adjusted to 12), water pump, oil pump, timing belt, air filter, new fluids and radiator and previous owner claimed the auto trans was looked at and check out good. With this being said, Im getting horrible gas mileage and power, and sometimes engine sounds like it’s misfiring, or even Choking out at low speeds. Getting about 150 miles out of the 15gal tank. What could be the issue with this?

Oh yeah that's really bad fuel economy! But it sounds like a good foundation thought! I would look for vacuum leaks for starters, and of course check for codes!

Whats the difference between the head gasket toyota has now the " redesign " (what ever that means) v the mls v one from autozone or oreilly?

I honestly don't know! I know the 4Runner forums have a fair number of threads talking about what head gaskets have worked well for guys. Mine had the recall done, which I assume means the redesigned gaskets are in there and they've been good for the 15 years or so I've owned her.

I THINK toyota came out with a redesign (again what ever that means) maybe just a few short years ago maybe 3 .. 4 years ago (?). But from calling a few local auto parts store they say they have the same as the dealer but just not at dealer prices. Then i hear about the mls gaskets but that more work and more $$$ to get the block and top surfaced a certain way to use that gasket. Then i hear felpro i think its called i s good. But then i hear and did research that its not so much the gasket but more so because of the cross over pipe that gets things hotter and some people using headers to deal with that heating issue. So i guess a better material head gasket but later when i can headers to make the engine last longer

So would an 1995 4runner 3vefe have the better headgasket? I'm planning to get this 4runner that just blown its headgasket at 223k miles it got 228 now. It got rebuild 223.

Yes the bad headgaskets were earlier years. But any motor can blow a headgasket. If the mechanic used quality gaskets and did the job right, you should be solid for years to come!

@@AgileWoodsman also when i check on the radiator it got some glittery or somebody use a bar stoper leak into it and that got me worried because is just got a new headgasket. i though flushing the coolant and changing it to a new radiator without those nasty glitter.

@@JalenRose02 Yes its hard for me to know without seeing it, but a new headgaskrt won't need stop leak obviously. Do you have a receipt from the previous owner for the head gasket job? I wonder if it was even done, or just stop leaked? Also if you do, maybe you can call or stop by the shop that did the work and ask them what the glittery stuff is about.

@@AgileWoodsman nope the owner lost the paper for the receipt. but i can tell they did something with the valve covers because it is clean ,which i would have though they might have done the headgasket and the valve covers at the same time. The owner said it did got a blown headgasket repair after he bought it. Edit he got it repaired the blown headgasket.

@@AgileWoodsman i drove it for couple minutes its seems fine cause i turn on the engine and there was no bubbles or air getting out of the radiator when i opened even with reving the motor. The cold start rmp was 1500, is that normal?

I have code 52 showing knock sensor showing as well. It felt fine but check engine light came on and felt like it was bogging down a bit especially stopping and going at the stop light

once I had an original factory knock sensor failure cause my 3vze not to start. it took a shop weeks to diagnose it. they thought fuel pump related. there is a signal knock sensor sends to ecm. apparently my sensor shorted. that was only time i had to have towed..... from a parking lot at MCD
