In 1986 Toyota SA launched a hot-hatch of its own in the form of the Toyota Corolla 160 conquest RSi
It formed part of a Corolla high-performance range including the Avante GLi and Sprinter GLi and this
might come as a surprise but the conquest weigh significantly more and this was due to a reinforced rear hatch. It weighed 970kg which is incredibly light by today's standards.
It was equipped with sports seats, a leather-wrapped sports steering wheel, and a leather shifter.
It was equipped with the legendary and highly tunable 4A-GE 1.6L 16V engine which produced 86kW of power and 136Nm.
A couple of years down the line the Toyota conquest 180 RSI arrived and Conquest enthusiasts were confused, they didn't know what to make of this car.
The 4A-GE Twincam was a tough act to follow and whatever Toyota South Africa had to come up with as the follow-up act would have to be more than special to satisfy Conquest enthusiasts.
To keep up with modern fuels, technology and carbon emission regulations the original 4A-GE 16V was shucked out
and replaced with a 1.8L 7A-FE engine producing 1kW less than the original engine at 85kW - the good news though is that it got 10Nm more torques than the original at 155Nm.
