The New Toyota Crown is part sedan, part SUV, so we’re calling it a Sedan-UV. And our guys really don’t agree if it’s any good or not. During this review they debate why it exists, who it’s for, and where it belongs in the market. There’s an argument brewing because of the Crown. And lots of bodies fit in the trunk! So tired of many reviewers of the Crown crying about its not a sedan and its not an suv. Who cares, I don't. After years owning Honda accords, we wanted a more quiet and smoother ride. Went looking at Lexus and similar sedans, because my wife, who this is technically her car, doesn't want or like SUV's. Yes that's an unpopular opinion in todays America, but it is what it is. Anyway, the Lexus hybrid sedans don't offer awd, and they sit too low. Climbing in and out of this car is great, not the oh my knees and back trying to get in and out, it is much easier than sedans, without the hassle of climbing into an SUV, which due to some mobility issues, my wife just can't get in some SUV's. We drove the new accord hybrid, which again is not awd, and it is still a noisy rougher riding car. We opted for luxury plus awd and for us, a preferred ride height. We absolutely love our Crown limited.

I think everyone is missing the obvious point and potential appeal of this car…in the snow belt states this is a win! All wheel drive and raised up suspension but not an SUV, much like the old AMC Eagle of the 80's. I think it will do well.✌️

The more things change, the more they stay the same. I'm kind of aging myself here but, as soon as I saw this thing it made me instantly think of the old AMC Eagle SX/4.

But with modern styling, dependability, sportiness, big size, lots of power, luxury and efficiency. Actually the complete opposite of a AMC Eagle. Your thinking of a Subaru Outback maybe. Maybe you should buy an SUV so you can't find it in the store parking lot because everyone else has the same looking POS. Wait, you probably already did and you already have that problem.

I bought a Crown platinum and love it. I love how it sits higher, and it drives beautifully and is so fun to drive. I like the room inside and how fast it accelerates. The seats are super comfortable, and I get so many compliments on it. My last 2 previous cars were Camrys.
@djplonghead5403
@djplonghead5403 Ай бұрын
The Crown is not a fancy Camry... It is a fancy Prius. The Camry has always been this car that is just the exact middle of the road. Middle Power, middle steering, middle everything. The Prius has always gotten attention (often for the worse) and is off of the middle. The Crown is the same way. It is different but netural. It is like a well refined Camry but has benefits of Lexus and benefits of something like a Prius. I prefer the look of the Crown Hybrid Sedan but that would not sell well in America (and really it should just be sold as the new es300h) so they brought the raised sedan and now the wagon (marketed as an SUV so people will buy it). I think the interior could have a few more materials and features for the price (at least the limited trim). When you look at something like a 2016 Buick LaCrosse Premium 2 you are getting a true luxury vehicle. We own a 2016 Leather 4d LaCrosse and drove the Limited and a looking to upgrade. Its price seems high for what you get. The Buick Premium 2 had: that the limited Crown does not... HUD (Color) 4 way lumbar rear sunshade 12 speaker Bose (may be better than the 11 speaker JBL) 304 HP (Trade off for MPG- 22) Amazing Ambient Lighting Built in Nav (now very outdated) curve assist headlights (Crown only adapts vertically) Better overall lighting (center console light etc.) Household outlet (WHY doesn't the Crown have it... It is a hybrid?) 4 way headrest. 10 way power seats (with the 4 way lumbar in addition) And MUCH MORE This is why the Crown needs to be its own brand in America- so we can get the features without them having to step up to a Lexus. We are talking about an eight year old BUICK (Not Cadillac) that has better features than a similarly priced flagship sedan. That Buick in that trim was about 39,000 and considering a Limited starts at 47,000 (2025) and goes up to 51,000 with the advanced tech package I think it should be better. We bought our LaCrosse 4d Leather for about 35,000. That is about 45,000 adjusted for inflation. Aside from the infotainment screen the cars are not really that different. The Buick has hood struts and an auto-lift tailgate that the Crown should defitenly have! -Just looked up what that $39,000 LaCrosse would be in todays money. It would be about $51,000. Sure- you don't get auto park but you get all the stuff I mentioned above that the Crown should have considering it is 8 years down the road. With the advanced Tech Package you might be getting 21's but the Buick had 20's and on 245 width tires. The Crown is stuck with 235. I Love the Crown for the range (600 miles) and overall MPG fun of driving it but that of-course is traded for the sound of the CVT and other hybrid things. In addition to that, you get to deal with some of Toyota's annoyances like crazy beeping and other features that are not fun to deal with. I Love the Crown so very much but I think it can be better for the position in the lineup and price it has. Even the 22 Avalon had a power tilt/teloscope wheel, dynamic turn signals, and other things. I guess it just sucks when you feel like upgrading but unless you spend a crazy amount of money you don't actually upgrade. Edit- Sorry for ranting to you.

I also bought the Platinum, The best vehicle I ever owned love the instant power and ride quality and the layout for storage & functionality is awesome. I have owned a few sport cars and full size sedans & sport suvs and this is the perfect middle ground with phenomenal gas milage. I hear all the time people say save money and get a camry or get the es300 or es350. I did test drive all those and let me tell you the es350 is nothing like the older es350 i heard wind noise and rattles on 3 different 2024 models that is bs they are not the same as they once were.

I drove the Platinum Crown for 4 days (310 miles). Really great car. Looks like a crossover but drove like a Lexus sedan on lifts. Car will not fail as equipped (and its fast). If it fails, it will fail like most sedans as the market remains SUV-centric. People will except less luxury appointments to stay within budget for an SUV. Nissan Maxima was a great car (minus the CVT). It failed because sedans have fallen out of favor. Toyota is trying something new w/ the Crown (and the future Crown crossover that looks like a Genesis GV70). Let's see how it goes.

@@braetonwilson4296 Can't disagree. Put a Lexus badge on it (similar to doing the same on a Venza), get on a blindfold and it may be tough to say it is a Toyota. Even sitting in a top of the line (anything) Chevy and you might think it's a top of the line Buick. Main stream manufacturers once catering to blue collar folks have been stepping up their value.

You don't really need the digital mirror unless you are often going to have people in the middle rear seat. Unlike an SUV where to get that claimed space (20 Cubic Feet Plus) that often means you are stacking items way past the window towards the roof- this blocks out vision out of the rear. It is at that point that the rear view mirrior becomes helpful. I don't think it does much in a sedan unless you have a person in that middle seat.

Great review as usual guys. I like your opposing viewpoints as well. Personally, I drive an SUV and I choose it for the convenience; being able to haul oversized stuff etc., but I love cars. There is a sleekness and maneuverability that you get in a car that is lacking in most SUVs. I find this Crown interesting because it's different and slots between car/SUV. I would prefer that the trunk had a hatch and for me, a more conservative one tone color, but love the performance figures and capability. There aren't much out there in this size category that is getting 30mpgs and the Toyota predictably reliability would make this a great choice.

The dual tone color is an option. This has a hybrid and a turbo which makes working on it worse (when it needs it). Also, this sedan has less cargo space than something like a chevy Trax which has a much smaller turning circle and is more maneuverability.

Test drove a base model, its all dealer had. Very nice. Love the look. For the money it should have an adaptable suspension system. Had a 1997 Lincoln Mark V111 LSC years ago. It had a airbag suspension system that was awesome. At 50mph the car would lower 1" and it would sense the distributed weight to level car plus it would stiffen the suspension in the mountain curves or soften the ride on the long freeways. I could take 30mph curves @ 55mph with no body roll! Loved when you opened the door the steering wheel retracted, lifted up, seat slid back, then when you closed the door it returned to the drivers set positions. It had a 2 person memory. When you put it in reverse the door mirrors would automatically lower so you could see your rear tires. Great feature when parallel parking. It hada 4.6 v8, 290 hp, 2K towing capacity and got 26mpg highway! But alas, i gotta say at 120k the airbag went bad, 5k repair (didnt do that) and around 150k little things started going south, so sold it @ 180k but the engine and 4 speed tranny still worked great. Used about a 1/2 qt of oil between 3k mile changes. But it was $40k new, which is $76k in todays money.

I am not a Toyota/Lexus buyer. I look at this thing and don't understand its appeal. But Toyota sells more cars than anyone; obviously they have a good read on the market. So I wouldn't bet against it being successful. It'll be interesting to see how it does. Then again, the execrable bz4x shows that Toyota can occasionally swing and miss. But given how clear it is that they rushed that half-baked design to market because they felt they had to I'm not sure it counts for much.

@TheEquationSlayer 10 ай бұрын
I think the BZ4X is an intentionally low-volume EV. They didn’t want to risk a big costly mistake, such as VW having to idle ID4 plants due to poor sales, or GM suffering with the Bolt fires/Ultium production troubles. The BZ4X will sell just enough to test production strategies and get dealership sales/service familiar with EVs.

@@TheEquationSlayer I don't disagree. And it makes sense for a company to take a 'piloting' sort of approach to introducing a new product based on technologies that it isn't familiar with. Still, it's SUCH a bad design, clearly at least 3-5 years behind the industry, that I can't help but think they panicked and rushed it out. You can't make me believe a company with Toyota's prodigious r&d, engineering, and manufacturing chops would market such an inferior product unless it felt it just didn't have time to improve it and had to get something in the market post haste. I think this the most likely explanation for the bz4x especially given how Toyota has pretty much done a fast 180 on its announced EV plans since they shipped it, with lots of publicity about how class-leading its next-gen platform will be when it's ready in the latter half of the decade, after years of rather loudly downplaying the need for the industry to move rapidly in this direction.

richard, just the sales tax on a 56k car can be 5k, so that brings total to 61. Another 3k for doc fee, registration, and titling. So now total is 64k. Now add in pre-installed accessories like paint protection, nitrogen tires, mug guards, floor mats etc. and you have 70k.

The Avalon wasn't exactly a sports car to begin with, and the core demographic wasn't trying to make it one. This didn't need to be a sports car to replace it. The Camry TRD V6 or the IS is still around for that. Eventually the proper sedan version of the crown will replace one of those. But just acknowledging the existence of the X6 and the GLE coupe monstrosities ruined my day. But that trunk "cutout" is so strange. It changes for no reason, and its hard to tell of it's black paint or glossy black plastic that will be swirled and scratched immediately. Just keep it uniform.
