I really don't understand the point of this new GR Corolla. People don't care about performance cars at all. If they did we would have a bunch of options across so many segments. And then another problem. This won't be affordable at all. And also throw in dealer markups. This seems like a absolute waste of money and they will barely make any so and again the price so the people who want this car will never be able to get it. This appeals to younger people and most of us can't afford this. Sidenote what ever happen to affordable cars?! You have to be rich to afford a brand new car now.

@@baronvonjo1929 I'm with you. Affordable quality was on its way out with the 2013 Yaris made not entirely in Japan but mostly in France at least for USA and if you ever looked behind the carpet in some of these vehicles, quality was nowhere near what the early Echos was. Eventually Toyota just "phoned it in" for the 2014+ Yaris and scion iA. Mazda 2 which originally was about $2000 more than a Yaris. They think the American market is not into quality and affordability. Silly bean counters!

Toyota doesn’t have an “identity crisis” what Toyota does have is a “Jackal and Hyde” personality where they can be whatever they want to be when they need to be it. I also feel like there’s two teams working at Toyota/Lexus.. the team who are car enthusiast catering to the 20% of car enthusiast in the world and the other team for the mass market catering to the 80% of the world. I’ve been a Toyota/Lexus guy since the 1990s I know exactly what Toyota is capable of. Their top tier but they can be stubborn at times

Considering you said on previous video that the GR Corolla is “The spiritual successor to the GT4 Celica” tells me that the Corolla line has an identity crisis. lmao. The Corolla has its own legacy. It just so happens that the greatest Corolla all time had a frankensteined Subaru Impreza coupe named after it. (further confusing the line) Toyota themselves were calling the GR Yaris the spiritual successor to the Celica btw.

If you want unmatched quality, buy a Japanese vehicle. I used to drive European Fords for many years, thinking car breakdowns was normal until my father bought a Corolla. It never broke... Ever! So I bought a corolla, my sister bought one, my two brothers bought corolla. Now today i have a Toyota hilux, my father still drives his 1992 Toyota corolla. It has rust on the bodywork now, but still going strong at 350000 kms. He lives in a town with only gravel roads. Toyota is in our family to stay. Its just absolutely brilliant.

I mean.. holy crap, they still selling fullsize minivans by the boatloads in US and the Asia pacific, in a time when minivans r thought to be a dying breed. Granted, 2020-present hasnt been a good year for a $50,000 minivan, but still. 😅 They sell cars to everyone man. 13:14 This version of the corolla was EXTREMELY underated, my mother used to own one when we lived in portugal, it was an european market exclusive, it was quite literally, the best car, ive ever had in my life, and I miss it so god damn much, I wish people talked about it more, I love its little bug face in the front and those big circle headlights, my inner child always gets happy when it sees it, truely the most underated corolla. Its engine varied from hatchback to coupe, it could have the 4AFE or the 5AFE, both extremely good and reliable engines that could literally go on a tank it would still survive. I am now in brazil and I am afraid I will never, ever see a car as good as that one, ever again, and it breaks my heart to know that.

I was concerned with the weight of the Corolla but considering that I just sold a 993 with 275 horsepower and 3150 curb weight - The gr just maybe a great replacement For both❗❗❗ As to how I drove the fiesta I will be more likely to not hesitate to trash the GR down any random gravel or dirt roads.

I wouldn’t say they have an Identity Crisis, I’ll say their vehicles are diverse and they have something for everyone in any market, you want a huge luxury barge well there the Lexus or the Century or let’s say you want a cheap econobox there the Yaris and Aygo, they have over 4 minivans for different places, they have vehicles for the outdoorsy people, they have the family carriers, they have the luxury cars, they have the EV’s and fuel efficient vehicles, I think this is what makes them unique and so profitable. You could be in a $60,000 Supra and pull up next to a Prius at the stoplight and in no less than 5 minutes see a Tundra. I think this diversity is so awesome, and those cars allow us enthusiasts to have our cars

My current car is a 2002 Toyota corolla Levin. It's an e120 4 door hatch back with a body kit from the Toyota sportivo (the 2zzge variant) With RWD corollas or those with the nicer engines being very hard to fine I settled on the Levin (which is equipped with the boring 1zzge engine - although id argue its still quite zippy/nice to drive). When I got my car home after paying a mere $3000aud for it I swapped the engine for a refreshed 1zzge that had 140xxxkms on it (the original having 280xxxkms and burning oil like no tomorrow) I wish I swapped in a 2zzge engine from the sportivo variant but price wise I was limited. As a car enthusiast I have had 45 cars in my life at 28 years old and several of those were all corollas (all boring variants) and something about the corolla just keeps pulling me back (I prefer them more than the wrx's, the 300zx's, the r33's, the European cars like the w126's etc that I've owned over the years) I think its a similar to how Honda lovers treasure the civic, you've got an unsuspecting FWD in many cases that are cheap and easy to wrench on and you make it into something nice and unsuspecting. Seeing a car with a boring look (interior and exterior) be transformed into something sporty looking and then you start adding suspension, brake, tyre and engine mods and you create a car that is still economical and unsuspecting but has some performance it just makes me smile. Its funny having a corolla that looks like shit wrx clone (but sexy in its own right). I think the main draw I had to the car was the fact its a Levin (in Australia) that nod to the previous 86 and sporty generations really sold it to me, I have many hopes and dreams to pour into this car as time moves forward and I only hope I am able to do it some justice when all is said and done but I do plan on settling and keeping this car for as long as possible. One day when I have a house and garage (cant justify the silly prices here ATM) I also hope to have a fun RWD variant to restore and drive alongside the modded e120, should I ever be unlucky and have my car be stolen or crashed (life happens) I will definitely upgrade to a gr corolla, but at the same time, I hope I can keep my current one for life and continue fixing and upgrading it.

Thank you for verbalizing what I've been thinking for a long while. I worked (briefly) as a Toyota car salesman and while on the car lot I couldn't help but think to myself "where is the sporting spirit?" Oh I saw lots of TRD stickers on Tacomas but other than that customers would have no way to know that Toyota had a long history in motorsport and a very respectable racing pedigree. To be fair this was after the Celica was discontinued and before the newest Supra came out, but even with the Supra I wish Toyota did more to bring the excitement and success they have achieved in WEC and other motorsports to their road car division.

1 thing I think is interesting that the video didn't mention/ got wrong, the 1st gen tercel is actually just a fwd corolla and it was built in 1980. its actually called the "corolla tercel". it was basically just a corolla trim option. These early tercels are basically just corollas with a front axel. Their engines and transmissions were even set up as if the cars were rwd. basically the only shift that happened to the corrola in the mid/late 80s was they turned the engine sideways, they had already produced fwd corollas in 1980.

Here's something you need to know in Akio-era Toyota. Akio Toyoda is not popular among all Toyota employees: he's liked by the factory workers and engineers for his hands-on approach, but hated by the middle management/accountants: the same people who made Toyoda the most boring brand in the 2000s. Akio Toyoda purged most of those bean counters in the early 2010s but needs to keep a few around otherwise the company collapses. Because of this we see this self-contradictory identity. Because of this, Akio Toyoda established Toyota Gazoo Racing and Woven Planet Holdings as two separate mini-empires within the bigger Toyota empire. The former for developing sports cars and latter for developing autonomous driving/connectivity technology. These companies are manned by his most loyal employees and operate independently from Aichi HQ. The problem going forward is that Akio is close to retirement, and he doesn't have a succession plan. It's a Toyoda family tradition for the successor to start from low ranks and work up the corporate ladder, and if he/she underachieves, an outsider is chosen as president. Akio's son is still too unexperienced to take over, and the bean counters are planning a comeback. It will be a great shame Toyota goes back to the 2000s appliance brand after his retirement.

The real missing link is this. For the US, the actual Toyota made Yaris secretly exited stage left around mid 2013 or 2014. When the new Vitz was released in Japan in 2014, we never saw that car. The Mazda 2 was given a little cosmetic nip/tuck to look like similar USA Toyota offerings. Also the Scion iA was a limited run of basically the same thing but maybe 2 extra doors? Anyway we haven't seen the sub compact Toyota made cars since 2013. The newer corollas are as cramped as possible and need a bigger forehead. Sorry I had to say it. And the blindspots!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jeez🙄, Corolla after AE86 isn’t that bored. As you see they still have 4AGE choice until AE111 and later in 90’s that block is a “5 valves per cylinder engine”. It’s still fun to drive whether it’s E90, E100 or E110 model. And not just 4AGE that can be enjoyable with, the FE version (4/5/7AFE aka the economy one) is a good machine too.

Unpopular Opinion Inbound Warning: Asking the Toyota Corolla to be a red blooded sports car is ridiculous. As much I as I think the Corolla GR is cool it'll be too expensive for most people. Paying well over $34,000 for a hatchback Corolla will be a hard sell in the USA. Personally, I think they should just take a base SE and breath on the 2.0 for 220+ hp, stiffen the car and call it a GT-S. Turbos and AWD add immense expense to what is *supposed* to be a fun little economy car.

It's not exactly a "crisis". They make what they think would sell well, just like any other manufacturer. Unfortunately no one's asking us enthusiasts for an opinion what should they be making instead. The majority of drivers couldn't care less about horse power, handling, torque, drivetrains, gearboxes etc. They look at cars as transportation. But huge respect to Toyota for making fun cars again, unlike Mitsubishi, Nissan, Mazda or Honda. Heck, even Subaru aren't interested anymore.

I think it’s crisis stems from the fact people don’t really know it’s legacy. Part of it is because Toyota was on and off with it, other is marketing.

@@MaddNomad1015 something like that. Manufacturers thoroughly research markets before making a model, and if the demand is high for it, there's not much need for proper hotter versions. Profit always comes first for every other manufacturer.

This isn’t a Chrysler situation where they’re churning out high-performance speed machines with slim pickings for their economy cars. Toyota knows where their bread is buttered; they earned their right to produce goofy cars because they’ve made sure they put their normal cars first to secure their spot in the market. I’m not a Toyota owner or really a fan, but their strategy seems like one worth keeping a close eye on.

Maybe I'm a weirdo but I kinda just want Toyota to make a RWD economy variant of the Corolla again. You know, a RWD manual transmission daily driver that doesn't need premium fuel but has some sporty dynamics. The FWD Corollas now handle very well now that they have independent rear suspension. They'd be awesome with RWD!
