Toyota GR Corolla Review: The Ultimate 3-Cylinder Fireball

It's time to test drive and review the 2023 Toyota GR Corolla Core hatchback!
The all-wheel-drive GR Corolla hot hatch has a 3-cylinder turbo engine that makes 300 horsepower, and it only comes with a manual transmission. The Core is the base-model GR Corolla with a starting price of $36,500, and the Premium ($40,000) and Circuit Edition ($45,000) slot in above it.
In this video, I'll walk you through everything: its features (and sometimes lack thereof), history and evolution, performance, interior, exterior, materials, sport mode, launch control, and so much more. I'll also discuss its competitors, like the Honda Civic Type R, and the current Toyota sports-car landscape, which includes the Supra, GR86, and GR Yaris.
Thanks for watching my KZfaq channel. I hope you enjoy the drive!

Even when we are enthusiastic for a manual-trans, performance car, the dealers step in to discourage us with their absurd 'premiums' and 'adjustments'. If you're rich enough to own an auto dealership, you don't need any extra money from us. I looked at a Type R yesterday with a $12,000 adjustment. Never.
@AlanisKing

Man, I hate that for you. The Type R is so good, and I wish everyone who wants one (like you) could get it for MSRP
@BlueSkyCrystals

This is why after my black Focus RS was rear ended and I got my $35k check from the insurance, I bought another RS. I looked hard for GRCs and CTRs and ITSs at MSRP and found nothing but markups. Out of principle, I refuse to hand my money to these crony dealers.

Yep, this review is pretty accurate. I’ve got the same red core and came from a 17’ VW GTI SE trim. The GRC interior is def not quite up to par in terms of material (I love leather seats). Same with the VW’s Fender audio system. But it does its job and more than makes up for it with driving performance. I’d say interior is alot easier to modify than the exterior or functional features like engine and drivetrain. I follow GRC groups on fb and there are a good handful of EVO owners who went with GRC who say the cars have many similarities with drive quality. If you want refinement get a Golf R. If you want a peppy hot hatch, get a GRC

The GR Corolla, or as I fondly refer to it as "The Grolla," stands out as an exceptional vehicle. I am the proud owner of a black on black Core model equipped with both the performance and cold weather packages. Its understated appearance exudes a sleeper-like quality, both inside and out, thanks to the seamless integration of lines and vents. While the interior may not match the premium feel of my GR86, the driving experience is nothing short of remarkable. Your accurate portrayal of the driving dynamics resonates with my own experiences. Once behind the wheel, any reservations are quickly forgotten. The inclusion of three distinct drive modes adds versatility, each mode imbuing the car with a unique character. I've found that opting out of IMT enhances the clutch and shifting experience, as IMT introduces some unconventional auto-rev behavior. Personally, I prefer utilizing either the 50/50 or 30/70 drive modes. The latter grants me capabilities not typically achievable in a rear-wheel-drive vehicle, while the former offers invaluable insights as a driver new to all-wheel drive. As for the 60/40 mode, it simply doesn't capture my interest.

These videos are flowing much better IMO! You are sounding more natural and less scripted. Suggestion: Try to incorporate a bit of feature/performance comparison points into the reviews. I would love to hear how the Corolla GR does in the fun quotient as compared to a Miata, or a _______, based on your experience. It would make the reviews easier to calibrate. And consider watching out for excessive use of the exclamatory “oh my goodness!” (I imagine you saying “holy shit!” In real life haha). Progress!

12:10 Never seen anyone articulate my exact thoughts so well when I first drove this car before I test drive. And Trust me I've watched A LOT of videos about this car when before and after I bought it. The only thing I can remember was the nervous look on the salesman's face when I started to push it, and the way my hands started to shake with excitement after I drove it. The best part was that I was coming from driving older cars (2005 and even older) I was super paranoid that despite it being a "driver's car" it would feel numb in comparison to a un-assisted steering rack that was in my mr2 aw11. Well not that it's 1 to 1, but despite being electrically assisted, it feels PRETTY DAMN CLOSE steering wise. I like that it's heavy, and I remember the first thing I thought of when I got the car was "Damn I'm at home here."

Unfortunately it’s hard for ppl to understand this car w out driving it. Myself for one, didn’t have any expectations either way…..didn’t really look into it all that much prior to getting some wheel time w it. I still find it funny/odd uttering these words………a Corolla is one of the best “drivers car” out there. Full stop. Having owned numerous fun cars thru the years, from an e46 m3 when new, to currently an r8 and braptor……this GRC is wildly entertaining, to the dismay of many. Specially, ppl who havnt driven one.

I look at the cheap interior as Toyota saving money in one place to instead spend on the engineering. Sure, a lot of the hardware is closely related to the GR Yaris, but a highly-engineered engine and gearbox (supposedly produced to homologate the engine for use in Rally2-class competition) connected to a brand-new active AWD system. That's expensive stuff in a hatchback.
@AlanisKing
@AlanisKing 2 ай бұрын
This is so fair! And honestly, you forget all about it so quickly when you start driving. It's just had to adjust to the new prices of items (inflation!) when the interior isn't as good as you would've hoped

Let’s be clear about the interior, it’s basic. No one buys this car wants an lushed out interior. It’s good enough and works. As far as the armrest, SXTH makes a sweet one and it’s only $119.
