So you need a hardcore off-road wagon that can scramble up a craggy mountain and smash through mud holes, but also cope with the drudgery of day-to-day life and all the practical considerations that come with it? Well, we've got four very interesting players in the rugged 4WD SUV segment that could well fit the bill.
This comparison test saw us bring together three ute-based seven-seaters: the just refreshed top-spec Mitsubishi Pajero Sport Exceed, which was our winner the last time we did a test like this; the flagship Ford Everest Titanium, because the broader CarsGuide community insisted we put high-spec models against high-spec models rather than matching up the prices; and the range-topping Toyota Fortuner Crusade, which has also been updated for 2020. Plus we've also included a stalwart in the seven-seater SUV segment - the Toyota Prado GXL, which is the most popular variant in its model range and sits pretty close to the top-spec ute-based SUVs on price. It also represents what a lot of people instantly think of when they're asked about family-friendly four-wheel drives.
All four of these models are diesel-powered 4x4 wagons, and in the versions we have here, each has seven seats - so they double up on practicality. The question is, then - do you go for the Prado? Or one of the ute-based SUVs? That might depend on your budget - and yes, there is a price disparity at play here, but we'll get to the details in the pricing and specifications section below.
We'll also go through the important family stuff like value for money, practicality, safety, and - of course - how they drive on-road, and how they cope off-road - and the words in the off-road review section below will be from our Adventure Editor, Marcus Craft.

Simple equation, buy the Prado if you cannot afford a 200 series, buy a Pajero sport if you are on a budget, go for the Everest if you want to tell stories in the future about your unpleasant experience with Ford dealers.

Vinsky Gash in our country theres a new facelited version of everest the above mentioned in video is an old one and the everest is named endeavour and endeavour/everest is at same price as fortuner and pajero sport is just a bit cheap (no one buys it due to no brand value ) and prado is priced more then twice the fortuner 👻 as its imported in our country

You can drive in an out of any wilderness in a Ford, it all depends on how capable you are as a driver, how well your vehicle is maintained and how it would be fitted out to tackle clearance and traction for this so called wilderness. Incompetent drivers come up with these analogies about Toyota being invincible and Ford being trash when they would be destitute no matter what truck they drive.

More than half of my family drives Toyota's, and I drive a hilux myself but I feel in recent years Toyota relies more on their reputation (which has been well deserved), rather than providing customers with good bang for their buck. Pajero Sports clearly show that you can get a great vehicle at a decent price, and Everest shows that innovation may not be dead yet. Prado has always been a favourite of mine but I hear more stories of it being underpowered and having other issues with vehicle and dealerships, it doesn't seem worth it. Also, I'm a manual transmission lover...so all these great off-roaders in auto without a manual option just depress me.

Had a PajSport for a while now. Spent the difference in price on some offroad mods and it is now quite capable. Why anyone would spend so much more on the others is beyond me. Did a lot of research and am yet to find anything where they are having any sort of issues which can't be said of some other brands. Brother has a "real" Pajero and it has been absolutely bulletproof with much hard work and offroading thrown at it. Same as the previous one he had. Best feature of mine is that the Mrs loves it. Not sure if you can order that feature when you buy one though.

Been looking at a 2015 Pajero Sport 2.5 for abit and seriously thinking of buying, it's got 105 000 on it and it's abit cheaper than a Ranger same year with 142 000 on it. I really like the Ranger but I'd rather find one with less kms on it. The Pajero Sport I'm looking at is right within my price range Ive grown to live Mitsubishi lately and this one has mileage low enough for me to feel safe. Anything to watch our for? As a Pajero Sport owner, do ya think I should just go right ahead and buy it? Also what's the mod price like to make it into a basic tourer?

@@vanderz1012 Hi mate. I have had mine for a couple of years now and very happy with it although it has only done about 26k. I'm assuming the 2.4 lt motor as the 2.5 is the older engine in the Tritons. The 2.5 is supposed to be a dog if you need to do the timing belts or something on it but that is just what my mechanic said. I looked and couldn't find any known issues with the engine, trans or whatever and no one saying that they had had problems. The 4wd system etc is a carry over from the Pajero which is very good. My brother has had 2 Pajeros from new, hammers them and uses them hard and has never had an issue. That is the Pajero though. I have put Old Man Emu susp. with about 2" of lift, Bridgestone A/T, an ARB bar, cargo barrier, GME radio with unit in dash and controls on handpiece and a roof rack. Please don't ask me about the roof rack........... Car is still comfortable although a bit more choppy with the heavier susp. and tyres but I don't mind it. We can still do long distances and get out fresh. A few things to think about with mods. Front axle load weight isn't particularly high, roof load limit is 70kg so be very careful which rack you choose and overall GVM isn't particularly high. Mine is about 100 kg under GVM with my gear in it but I don't run much heavy gear. In reality if I put 5 decent sized guys in it with what I have it would likely be overweight. Fuel capacity isn't very high but it is reasonably economical. Personally I think it is a good vehicle, especially for the price but make sure it has been serviced properly and get it checked etc. Good luck with your decision and I guess my answer is, after my war and peace effort, is that I would buy another one if I was looking again. If you get it let me know as I know a couple of little tricks you may like to use. Cheers mate.

I test drove all these cars a year ago ( including the MUX ) expecting to buy the Prado at the end of it. The Everest (Trend 2ltr bi-turbo) was hands down the nicest, quietest and most responsive of the lot. It was a pleasure to drive, so we bought it and havent looked back. If there is any issue with Toyota's they will fix it before warranty run out they won't wait till the warranty run out, like other cars. My 200 blew it engine at 70000 and Toyota replaced it no questions asked. Then blew it again on 120000 and they replaced it again but took 4 weeks. Now I have a brand new engine and running like new. I can't say this for other cars.

Pajaro 👉 Nice interior cheaper for the money engine has bad design on EGR faulty 4. Everest bad Transmission not holding value due to lots of fault and bad customer service Conclusions 👉Toyota sell them self no need to pay someone to advertise great warranty holding in price!! We’ve looked at all and by far the most luxurious is the Ford, it’s just a nicer place for the family on big off-road trips. I’ve both lived and worked in the Pilbara in NW Western Australia for 16 yrs. Toyota rules supreme in this landscape which is arguably the harshest environment on the planet. We’ll go through a set of Bridgestone 697LT tyres on a Hilux in 20000km - that’s to the canvas. Most of the time we operate the Hilux with just about every warning light on the dash, have done for years until we can get them to the workshop. DPF issues are a pain and without a workshop a Hilux out here would be dead within 6 months........but no civilian would ever put a Hilux through what we put them through and we have 2 Hiluxs that are still going after nearly 250000km of severe use - with lots of servicing though on the side. We also run the 76 and 79 series and and the company has just taken delivery of some brand new dual cab 79s - they don’t like deep water and we’ve had some issues in the past through bad wet seasons but again, no civilian would ever use a vehicle like we do. We have been seeing a lot of tradies driving Isuzu’s and Rangers at many mine sites over the years now which speaks volumes also for those vehicles in the Pilbara environment. For me it’s comfort and capability. All are very capable but the Ford will do it in a business class environment for the entire family. And with the warranties these days the consumer is the big winner for peace of mind. I love my Toyota’s and have travelled around Oz in an old 40 series including the CSR and have owned many other variants. For us though the next vehicle will be the Ford Everest Titanium🤘🤘 Great video too gents, thoroughly enjoyed it.

the LandCruiser is good since it has an option for mud and sand and the others such as wilderness that helps it In adapting to the environment and the habitat by the way if the land cruiser got stuck in the sand there are many ways for that to happen, but it does have an option for that too it is called a crawling system I think that if they took all of these cars to the middle east and went to the desert the Pajero and the ford not offending but it would face troubles because it doesn't have a lot of buyers in the middle east so it doesn't really focus on enhancing there but the Prado, Fortuner, LandCruiser and the Nissan patrol have contact with the middle east so there the ford and the Pajero will face some problems and they might have some issues because they are kind of low and in the sand and hard off-road terrain's you need the car to have a larger axel for the weels and not really important for having headspace other than that the ford that they concluded to be the winners have the not so hard habitat so city roads will be the best option for them to focus on other than that if the car has a high price it is logical for its parts and maintainace to be at a slightly higher price than normal, yes, it might be cheaper for them in the united states because this car was acctuaqlly manufactured there so it will ofcors be easier to take it for one place to another and to sell it also the head cuarters might be focused there and that is all what i can comment so far

Durability of the Everest hasn’t been proven and when I google search the subject you find a variety of posts that talk about issues with this car down the track. I’ve been doing research for over a month now as I wanted to get a Pajero Sport (Montero Sport in my country). Toyota with Fortuner really relies only on brand reputation maybe because in ALL of the reviews I have seen Pajero comes on top of the Fortuner and many others SUV of its category. I decided to go for it and now I’m just waiting for the delivery of my car.

70,000km is nothing as long as you've kept up the servicing, regardless of how it's driven, with the exception of the true lemons, common rail diesels start showing their true colours around 150,000km, that's when you see which ones were built to last (of course most people upgrade to a new one before this, so it's usually the second owners that get to find out how reliable they are).

Keep in mind resale in 3-5 years and what value you get in return. Prado v Fortuner $5k at the front end and according to Redbook a Jun 2015 GXL Prado ($61,990)with average kms 80,000-130,000 has a private price guide of $39,100 to $42,900 and the Aug 2015 Fortuner Crusade ($61,990)again with average kms 80,000-130,000 has a private price guide of $34,200 to $37,770. Looking at the above review both being on par with pricing there is $5,000 difference and if the Prado is $5,000 dearer now it's likely you'll retain the difference at time of selling.

i know it isnt in the test (mux or the discontinued Trailblazer) but by far the most comfortable 3rd row even compared to this. I am 188cm tall and can spend decent time back there. For family with child seats and want to tour you can get a professional to install top tether points in the MUX\TB, they are steel framed seats in 3rd row so easy to get done for not a lot of money so dont let the fact the ford has them put you off the others. for less than a $1000 you can get both 3rd row points done. Very useful when touring for a week with 3 adults and 2 kids and all the luggage. For reference. we fit behind the 3rd row (storage box removed) double pram (side by side), and large bush backpack, small backpack and country road bag. next to the child seat we fit 2 carry on rollers, 1 medium roller bag, 2 country road bags. 2 smaller bags for kids toys. (this was all tied down for safety) So in second row we just had a soft large eski in foot well in front of child seat and a small fridge.
