Toyota Prius 2001, Master Warning Light / Check Engine Light fuel pump problem ODB Code P3191

I had an Master Warning Light / Check Engine Light with my Toyota Prius when the OBD Code P3191 Engine Warning happened. Car was still able to drive and the warning would clear, but soon came back on. It was a fuel Pump Problem to do with the relay switch. This is how I resolved the problem for NIL COST!!!

This fixed my 2002 Toyota Prius light. I started the car one day and the Prius hybrid warning light came on the touch screen display. With “Ps and Master Battery, as well as the flashing red Prius hybrid warning light”, on the dash the red triangle with explanation point as well as check engine light were on. I did exactly as the video said and all lights are gone. I called Toyota Mech and said I will not need their services. Of coarse if the issue arises again I’ll go. But thank you for keep “Bob” on the road for let’s hope a long long time. Lol Ps the car drove perfect with all those lights on, just an annoyance and a gut wrenching feeling of taking a hit to the pocket book.

Worked for me on 1/17/16 but I will add that I had to disconnect the 12v battery for about 10mins to clear the memory. Thank you for posting this sir.

Hi john thanks for posting this fix we have a 2002 Prius which has been a great wee car ,it has started to give us a few problems lately and we don't want to part with it,so thanks to you we will keep it running for a bit longer yet ,cheers

Note, if you have P3191 and P3101 errors it usually means you need to clean out the throttle body.

I am about 8 hours from home and stranded with both the master warning light and the check engine light on. I will go to autozone tomorrow to check the codes but I couldn't see your video about cleaning the throttle body sensor.

The light went away before swapping the relays, but I proceeded with swapping them anyway, it seems like it solved the problem, but I guess I'll have to drive it a while to be sure. I'll order a spare just to have one handy if they're cheap.

I hope this is the problem with my car. I've been feeling power loss issues every now and then. Just today the warning light came on with severe power loss, I was still able to drive and could still accelerate quite a bit, shut the car off and started it again and still had the issue, I'll try this, hopefully it solves the problem. If it does, I'll be back. :)

From what you said it does seem that your fuel relay switch may have been about to go. Since you never use your horn constantly the horn relay switch will still be as good as new so swapping the horn relay switch with the fuel relay switch is an easy fix. John .Mitch The most I use my horn is pushing the panic button when I forgot where I parked. haha The part is under $4, so I'll just order a couple to have as spares. I got them out with some adjustable pliers with a rubberband as padding/grip, but I squeezed one too tight at one spot and cracked the cap a bit. I had to remove the mg clt one to get access to the fuel relay one, but other than that, looks OK. We'll see over time. I've been having random power loss for a while where I'd have to push the accelerator harder to get back up to speed, maybe this'll increase my fuel efficiency as well if that was the issue. :)

Your fuel efficiency should improve, mine did by 20% or so. What you are describing with yr prius is exactly the same problems I had. I even chipped one of my relays trying to pull it out with long nose grips as you can see in my vid. Just to let you know I have had trouble free motoring since I swapped round the relays.

John .Mitch Hey John.. Really helpful information. Just quick question if could respond to me.. I bought Prius 2005 model. It works great. Only sometime suddenly the sign 'exclamatory mark inside triangle' does pops up. and it goes within seconds... I am not sure why this happens.. Does it because of fuel pump issue or Tyre pressure.. If you could throw some light on it, it will be good... thanks a lot..

Anant Joshi You need to find out the fault code if your prius is giving one, you can do this by buying an app called torque, and an engine management unit interface that works with torque bfrom ebay or amazon for about $10 for both bits of kit
