Good to know. Toyota should have mentioned this that the oil is not a compression fit. You could just finger tighten the oil filter assembly and the metal clip will keep it in place if it loosens. To many DIY's have problems loosening this filter cap.

Suggestion if I may... Use the correct 14 mm wrench in the drain plug. The best oil filter cap wrench for this application is the Motivx MX2321 which is designed for 1.8 & 1.3 liter Toyota built engines with the cartridge system. And it is best to remove the o-ring like you did (without the air of a screwdriver or pick per the instructions that came with all those OEM oil filters you have. Also oiling the o-ring us not something you "can do if you want". It's something you should do. Read those instructions again. Just hand tightening the oil filter cap is not going to work for most people. It needs to make contact with the mounting base at least but tightened to 18 ft.lbs. (less than the drainplug). Check the oil with the dip-stick after running the engine and checking for leaks and taking the vehicle off the ramps & onto level ground.

Thanks for the post:). Ahhhh yes, one bad experience with ramps could stop any future attempts ... a friend had a similar experience. Anyone using ramps should be very careful when pulling up - you only want to give enough gas to get the car start up the ramps and then let off. Once the car gets over the first lip of the ramp, ease the brakes. I used jacked stands and still do sometimes. I always have the feeling the stand may give way, although this can be overcome by placing the lift underneath as a backup.

Agreed:). I have seen and heard strange happens from oil change mechanics ... yeah - I prefer to do my own if possible:). If not, find a trusted mechanic to change the oil:).

Thanks for the post/feedback ... lol - I know the feeling:). The first change is always a pain in my opinion. Perhaps you need to purchase a wrench, ramps, etc. Nonetheless, I prefer to change my own if time permits as I like to know it is done right:).

I was changing oil on my old Volvo. I had to use a long breaker bar to get the damn drain bolt loose. The bar is like 2 feet long and I have to put all my strength into it. Good thing I have a set of well made sockets, which don't grip the bolts on the corners, but rather the edges of the bolt (they grip even when bolts are half stripped)

Everyone who has this system should be prepared for a worse case scenario especially if this is the first time you're doing this. In case of a Stuck Oil Filter Make sure you have the following... 1. The proper Motivx* oil filter cap wrench. Item #MX2320 is for all Toyota/Lexus/Scion engines 2.0 liters and larger using a cartridge style oil filter or item #MX2321 is for all engines smaller than 2.0 liters using a cartridge style filter. 2. A 27 mm ½ inch drive socket 3. A ½ drive breaker bar (18 inches or longer in length. An extension may be needed for some models.) If an oil filter cap seems difficult to remove, only the above items should be used (or equivalent tools). Do not simply use a ⅜ inch drive ratchet or ratchet with extension as these will sometimes result in breakage of the oil filter cap wrench or the oil filter cap. Always make sure the teeth on the wrench are properly engaged with the tabs on the oil filter cap. To prevent reoccurrence of the problem •Make sure new o-rings are properly lubricated before installing. •Use a torque wrench to install the oil filter cap to no more than 18 ft.lbs (25 N•m). Oil filter drainplug = 9 ft.lbs. (12.5 N•m) * If you think the Motivx tools are too expensive at least consider the following... Do not buy an oil filter cap wrench that is made from cast aluminum. Only buy one that is forged. Do not buy one that is strictly a cap wrench that does not have teeth. Do not buy one that claims to fit all models or even all four cylinders. The 2.0 and 2.5 liter four cylinder engines use the same oil filter cap wrenches as the six and eight cylinder engines use. Only the 1.8 and 1.3 liter engines use a different size oil filter cap and oil filter cap wrench. If the oil filter for your four cylinder vehicle comes with one o-ring instead of two then your vehicle takes the same wrench as a Prius or Corolla (unless it's a six cylinder). If your oil filter comes with two o-rings & a service pipe for draining the filter then your oil filter cap takes the same wrench as the six and eight cylinder engines. Some companies claim their wrench works for all four cylinders but on the 2.5 liter engines that smaller wrench does not engage the teeth on the wrench to the tabs on the oil filter cap. Thanks for the post and glad to be of help!:) You can do it!:) Might be a little slow the first time you change the oil but that is to be expected and okay. The second time will go quicker along with the third, forth, etc.:). The primary reason I change my own oil is knowing it is done right ... I may save a few dollars in the process, but I like to know the proper type and amount was used along with the oil plug being tighten, etc. Play some music and enjoy the time:).

Very interesting and thanks for the post:). Since the plug is towards the back of the pan, I believe you are still good to leverage ramps on a level surface. Nonetheless, you have an interesting idea to raise the front while keeping the car level:).

If pan threads are aluminum then why does a magnet stick to the oil pan?

Thanks for the post Jason:). The previous oil change was at a dealership - but it wasn't a Toyota dealership:). I use OEM filters now and continue to change my oil. Each time, the filter is difficult to remove even though I apply the correct torque:).

Try impossible. I purchased two different oil cap removers from Advanced and one tool was just a millimeter to big and the other that did fit broke when I tried to remove the oil cap because the dealership screwed it on to tight. So I ended up putting in 2.5 quarts and I'm taking the car back to the dealership just so I can get the stupid thing loose enough that I can do my own changes at home. This is ridiculous.

I fully agree ... the dealership typically ignores the recommended torque needed to tighten the filter (most people do). The dealership should not have an issue in breaking the filter free. Regarding the tool - that stinks. The fitted tool should not have broken unless there was a crazy amount of torque applied to the filter.

If you know the capacity, having changed the oil numerous times, there is no reason to question whether right amount was put in or not. But he should have because he didn't seem to be sure.

Wow, sorry you had to go through that mess. I typically do most maintenance work myself for that reason - I do not know who is working on my vehicle nor their attention to detail, etc. If I am unable to work on my vehicle, I do my best to find a trusted mechanic (which can be difficult:)).

I had a quickie lube break the filter cap. I drove it for about 300 miles and noticed the engine getting louder. (no idiot lights) Pulled into a small gas station in the middle of up north Michigan in a pouring rain around 1AM and checked the oil and I had a no oil on stick situation. At first I thought I just couldn't read it in the dark and pouring rain. I looked around the engine and it was or had gushed oil out of the filter housing where it was cracked. I dumped some oil in got it back up to full and got it to a place where I could buy a new oil cap in the morning and waited for them to open in a few hours. Perfectly good engine screwed over by a lube guy. .

Hello - thank you for the post/feedback!:) Interesting thoughts on the clips and the cover. Not a bad idea to have some extra clips available as they could crack/break/etc. Full synthetic does not break-down like conventional oil making 10k miles between changes doable:). You can always change sooner but not necessary in my opinion.

RealWorld - agreed. The full synthetic oil could last 10k without problem. Especially the Prius got assistance from the electric motor. I noticed the engine oil stay cleaner for longer time than solely combustion engine car.

@@RealWorld I am having the same problem with not being able to loosen the canister to change the filter. I've watched over a dozen videos and I think I found the solution finally after all those videos. For first time in my life I didn't change the filter when doing an oil change.... correct filter wrench and a breaker bar wouldn't budge it the only time I tried when I bought the car last month.

@@paulmarshall1596 ya same here. I actually skipped changing the filter until the next oil change. Went online and bought a heavy duty oil filter cap that was designed for the Prius and it was a snug fit. The last one I used was a stamped metal that was slightly loose and actually rounded slightly the plastic oil cover cap, so that's why I skipped the oil filter change until I got the right size filter. About the clip other viewers mentioned I did't see it after the removal of the plastic oil cover cap. I did see a metal tang that seemed to be permanently embeded in the plastic oil cover cap.Also the oil ring seal is actually not a compression seal that you torque against it but seals the oil on the sides ...if you look inside the metal filter holder there is a smooth side where the filter seal would rest when you have the filter cap close to where it normally would rest in the close position.

LOL ... yes, they are a pain in my opinion!:) I just finished changing the oil again and encountered the plastic nails. You might think Toyota could leverage another method to more easily secure the panel:).

I used no ramp, jacks, or pit on my gen 2 (2008) because it seemed to have enough visibility and clearance to shove an oil pan under and still be able to reach under and remove the plugs and filters. I think my gen 4 (2019) may require a ramp or floor jack, even though they went back to the traditional oil filter. BTW. do think cocking the car to the side using only one ramp may have entrapped a little more old oil? Just wondering...

@@normfromga Last time I changed it I drove D side up on the sidewalk and there is a low spot where I could slide a slim pan under and had to eyeball the fulter install through a little hole in the Tupperware .

There is no need to remove that retaining clip. The only time that is necessary is if you are using the wrong oil filter cap wrench. Use the right wrench and leave the clip alone.

Good point regarding blocks - additional safety is always a good idea in my opinion:). Agreed - someone seriously must have over torqued the bolt:).

You only need blocks if you're using jack stands instead of ramps. Do you block your wheels if you park on an uphill street? The car should be in Park if it's automatic and the parking brake should be set. If it's a manual transmission, then blocking one of the wheels is a good idea.

@@RealWorld Speaking of leaks, I notice you and others snap the service port back in place before adding new oil and starting the engine. Mightn't that door cause you to miss any minor leaks while your car was still on the ramp?

Hello Dolly - most regular cars do not require full synthetic oil. Full synthetic will cost a bit more but also last longer.

there are two types of oil, regualr and synthetic of different viscosities. I hope this helps

Any car that calls for 0W-20 pretty much is going to get synthetic. There is no such thing as pure conventional 0W-20.

That is a bit too much:). When you check the dip stick, where does the oil hit? If you are above the top line/dot, you have too much. This is typically not a huge problem. The car may run a bit rough and the fuel economy might not be the best (everything will improve once the oil starts to burn/lower). If you want to quickly resolve the issue, simply place a drain pan under the plug and loosen the bolt - you not need to full remove the bolt:). Loosen the plug until the oil starts to leak. After letting it leak, finger tighten and check the oil level using the dip stick. If not low enough, finger loosen and repeat the process. Do not feel bad as MANY people accidentally overfill - most likely, we have all been there at some point:).

You actually get more oil out with an extractor. I used a Mityvac MV7201 Fluid Evacuator Plus. The Topsider Oil Changer is cheaper and I'm looking at getting one as its more portable so I can take it with me and change other peoples oil.

I agree, some cars (not the Prius) have the oil filter on the top so its really easy.

9/16" is the same as 14mm, so it will be a 14mm wrench, socket, whatever.

As long as it's a six-sided socket it should be fine. It's only slightly larger than 14 mm.
