No matter if you're looking at a Toyota Camry, a Toyota Corolla, or a Toyota Tacoma, the question is...is Toyota reliable? The answer is that things have changed and that you might want to look at Toyota reliability a little differently today vs how you looked at them before. There are some changes in the new Toyota cars that might be different than you imagine!

It is true. Hearing Toyota is having some issues. Replacing the V8 with a turbo V6 in the Tundra was a very bad idea. This is why ppl are looking for low mileage older cars.

I don’t know if you can really put this on Toyota. They have to keep up with the tech trends that the customers want to stay competitive. I’m sure some people would rather have the bland, boring but reliable Camrys from back in the day, but even their top brass vowed no longer to be considered boring. High tech means more complexity and more things to break. I think that’s just inherent.

Yes, I totally agree with you. I was thinking the same thing as I watched this video. This is the way the industry is going. I bought a new 2021 RAV4 XLE Premium (gas version). 2.5 L 4cyl. No CVT, no turbocharging, port & direct injection. I believe all of the above is a recipe for longevity. I'm pretty sure that this engine will not be catching fire/blowing up as some owners of the Korean brands are facing. As far as al the new technology goes, it is inherent in any new car produced today, so you just have to hope for the best!!

It seems like with most of your videos, the cars are covered in snow and ice, and of course I assume salt and grime from the roads within the undercarriage of the vehicle. Toyota is not what they used to be but they are leagues ahead of anyone else despite this. The reliability is still there but the integrated tech is not top shelf because they want to test things out before it goes into their cars. My 2005 4Runner has 350000km now and so far in terms of major repairs is about $4000 not including tires, filters and oil changes. I'll happy with the results so far. Toyota vehicles will give a some advance notice before it fails. Domestic gave me so much problems like the car gear just lock ups, the car can't move at all or my brakes just quit without warning because of the master cylinder. I was so terrified, but was luckily it quits while I drove in the bay for oil change.Imagine if it happened on the highway!

One issue with modern Toyotas has to do with the factory recommended maintenance schedule. Toyota claims you can go 10K miles between oil changes. While this could be true for some drivers who put on a lot of miles and who drive mostly at highway speeds, it really should be downgraded to 5K miles for most drivers. Toyotas need clean oil, especially to prevent future oil consumption. Of course this won’t happen until you’re well beyond the powertrain warranty.

So, here's a reality check on the older tech. Lexus put tons of money into designing the first LS 400. From there, they had experience for designing reliable tech. That got figured into their next Lexi. I own 2 RX's, one a 330 with yesteryear's old school closed deck engine, and it has everything still working. The other is an 07 with the 2GR FE engine. It has the LSDs and more modern open deck designed engine. When I want to drive a Lexus, I drive the RX330 because the newer RX350 is parked due to engine failure. By the number 2 cylinder the head gasket has failed. I also own a 3/4 ton Chevy and it's engine has needed repair for longer than the Lexus RX350, just saying, because the 6.0 liter is also supposed to be reliable.

Maintenance is key and how to drive a turbo charged engine is key. Mazda is winning me over by still offering non turbo engines and 6 speed transmissions proven reliable. I even saw a recent review of a new Hyundai that is probably the worst reliable brand with a new design that went old school. The new SUV has a non-direct injected naturally aspirated 3.8 litre V-6. I would not buy a Hyundai, but I will watch that model and engine and see how it holds up which from the looks of it just might. Carcarenut just reviewed it. Instead of going forward Hyundai went old school.

@@theshield1613 I agree, but this last few years that has not been necessarily so. I serviced my wife's 2015 Ford Fusion well and at 22k miles it left us stranded. Ford fixed it under warranty, but it is what they found that was troubling. A cracked cylinder head in 3 places that they said was probably there from the forge and should not have passed for install. It was a 3rd party that made the heads. It got through their quality control and then got past Ford's quality control. This happenned on many of their vehicles. In general good maintenace always works. We are entering a time to where the auto industry is turning to untested technologies to meet government mandates. They add these technologies then discover their problems after. Problem is many of these issues happen after warranty. The manufacturers know what they are doing. They turn to new technology and design it to last just long enough to get them past the warranty period then they are off the hook and the consumer gets the negatives to the new technology. I miss the mid to lower 2000's that is when I believe American Domestic brands were Toyota grade they were reliable and lasted a long time. Then came direct injection and its been downhill ever since.

Gas regulations are what drive a lot of these changes. I don't think Toyota would have gone to Turbos without higher mileage standards. Even the changes towards the Iforce engines for greater efficiency have more tech and more long-term issues. More complex cooling systems. Not all has been bad, though. The D4S has been a great addition that has been very reliable.

Unfortunately if Toyota or any other car manufacturer doesn’t keep up with the technology that consumers love and demand now, sales will plummet. As far as the waste-gate issue with the Tundra I think it was a pretty isolated issue due to a bad batch of parts and has since been corrected. It’s not unheard of for a new engine to have some initial teething problems quite the opposite actually. Even the venerable 5.7L had a few common issues like the secondary air induction problems. On a personal note I had a 2011 Tundra with the 5.7L. It dropped a valve at 88,000 miles destroying the whole engine.

This created favorability with mechanics, who in turn praised them more, which reinforced their reputation among the general population that knew little about cars and accepted the word of their mechanic. But now they don't perform the same considerations of maintenance into designs.

I completely agree that we will probably no longer see the average car go 200k miles before it's mechanically totalled. I don't necessarily blame the car manufacturers though. The government keeps pushing for lower emissions. So a turbo 4 cyl from toyota puts out less emissions than a 3.5 V6 in a camry, but the same power range. I see 150k average out of the 4 cyl turbos before they have major repairs.

Very good, in depth and straight to the points. My daughter replaced an 14 year old Corolla she bought new for a '23 Lexus RX350H. She chose Lexus because she new it was a Toyota brand and assumed she will get the excellent reliability she had with Corolla. As you stated these are very different cars, with all the added systems and things to go wrong in the Lexus. Time will tell, but she is now at the point where she will start replacing cars sooner and trade before excessive miles to notice as many failures. As far as your comments about the Supra sharing BMW drivetrain and technologies- I have had 6 BMW's with 3L straight sixes for over twenty years and they have proven to be very reliable for me. When they went turbo in '07 I was concerned but they have treated me well.

Issue is most, if not all, of these changes are forced by the gov. Big screens are due to the back up camera requirement, tiny turbo V6’s are due to the cafe standards constantly getting stricter. The gov doesn’t care if a car is disposable, they just care about the off the line specs. Pretty dumb when you could save the environment by not needing a new car every 5-7 years to begin with.

While I may agree that tech can lower reliability Toyota is still the most reliable product with the best resale of any vehicle, if you do 5k mile oil changes vs the suggested 10k and do general maintenance your Toyota will last, the only tech problem is that entertainment system, but in truth that is an any brand issue. I personally own a 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid and live in Alberta, Canada where the weather is nasty in winter and the car has been flawless prior to that I had a 2021 Toyota Camry hybrid again no issues. Toyota is the the hybrid king and while earlier models had some issues the newer ones are excellent, go look at what your taxi services use and put on millions and millions of miles with very little issue. note: most of them are various Toyota Hybrids!!

So far after having a old heavy dashcam that was being held by suction cups fall on it, cracked the screen (but it still works) and now backlight is so dim. I can hardly see it during the day. And since it controls the AC and heater. It does get annoying. As for the rest of the car. In short: engineers now know exactly when a part will fail, so they don't over-engineer stuff like they used to, hence the chance of a car to live considerably longer than the warranty period is now greatly reduced.
