I've worked for a large Toyota dealer in Southern California, for 4 year now, this year is a very bad year for EV sales. We sell one EV for every 185 gas cars, and its getting worse each month. Gasoline cars are in big demand.

Toyota sells a LOT of HEV's, which given their mileage, are a GREAT transitional vehicle. As someone who doesn't drive much (relaxed retiree), with a 2025 (or later) Camry (they'll ALL be HEV's, for example, I can use 50 USG TOTAL gasoline a year, max. Well over 95% of my driving is in the city. Most of the gas consumption problem is SOLVED, re my regular real world 20ish mpg rating tooling around (like a retiree) in my 2017 Camry. I know Tesla fanboi types love to whine about hybrids, but until there are plenty of cheap, reliable, long range BEV's for EVERYONE who wants one, having a great transitional HEV is FAR better than a regular ICE -- since the meaningful GOAL is to greatly reduce burning hydrocarbons, re AGW and pollution. (Not pump TSLA). And I say this as a patient TSLA long in size (for the size of my portfolio) since 2016.

Living in America, I can safely corroborate that hydrogen fuel cell is dead on arrival. There are a few charging stations for it in another state maybe a thousand km away (maybe 600 miles, as we would say here). By comparison, there are Tesla Superchargers everywhere, and EV chargers in our own garage. We don’t even have gas stations in our garage. It’s a format war that is already over.

It takes money to make money. In 2022, the Japanese company sold 10.5 million vehicles, retaining the title of the world’s top-selling automaker but also conquering that of the most indebted company of all. By comparison, at over $200 billion, its long-term obligations are bigger than the external debt of a small country like New Zealand. To stay on top, Toyota had to make massive investments in research and development and spend big on global operations and marketing. Some industry experts say toyota has been slow in transitioning away from traditional internal combustion and hybrid vehicles to all-electric cars (EVs). Yet S&P, Moody’s and Fitch do not seem terribly worried about Toyota’s future judging by their high ratings of Toyota’s debt. The auto giant plans to sell about 3.5 million EVs by 2030 and remains highly profitable for now.

It was timed initially to the higher than expected deliveries. It's not clear (IMO) why it has continued to rise pretty steadily overall. Speculation over earnings later this month and speculation over what happens with FSD / robotaxis on Aug. 8th (re announcements) are candidates. ... Given how much the implied volatility has risen (along with the stock, short term), I'm selling some OTM calls for big premiums. I'll maintain my core unencumbered TSLA position regardless, but given how random Musk continues to be and all the competition, I'm less happy holding a large position long term unless the stock gets a lot cheaper again. (As volatile as it is, it certainly might be within the next 2 years or so). NOT making any TSLA price predictions -- short term I NEVER know for ANY stock.

In the UK, this year, 22% of all new car sales must be zero emission. Each year the percentage increases. By 2030 the target is 80%. To qualify as zero emission a hybrid has to do 100 miles on electric only. No hybrids currently on sale in the UK meet this requirement. Penalty for missing these targets is $19,000 per car. JD Power and Top Gear confirm that there are no plug in Hybrids that meet the 100 mile requirement. California and 9 other large states have similar zero emission mandates.

From everything I have read, Toyota's EVs pretty much suck. Toyota's UI and software have always sucked, and yes, I have owned several Toyotas and driven several of their newest SUVs and cars. Toyota's EVs have abysmal range and outdated battery technology, and we don't know how long their batteries will last. Worse yet, their new Tundra has catastrophic flaws in the engine and transmission and Toyota is trying to put Band-Aids on the issues instead of doing the right thing and giving buyers a completely rebuilt engine/transmission without the problems. Their plug-in hybrids could have been their salvation, but for some indiscernible reason, Toyota refuses to make sufficient quantities to meet demand. Their RAV 4 plug-in hybrid has had rave reviews but you can't find one to buy., and if you do stumble on one, the dealers have marked it up ten or fifteen thousand dollars. I used to be a Toyota only buyer, but that has radically changed. Amusingly, the RWD Tesla Model 3 with the LFP battery is turning out to be one of the most reliable, trouble-free cars on the road. It's the Toyota Tacoma of EVs and it is ranked as China's most reliable car, and China has the largest auto market in the world. There have been rumors of Toyota developing a solid-state "wonder battery," but there is little proof that this is actually a real product that will come to market in the next couple of years. Meanwhile, CATL has developed a real LFP battery that will provide EVs with over 600 miles of range; it will keep all of its capacity for 1000 charging cycles and lose very little after that; it will charge in 15 minutes and will function well in extreme hot and cold climates. This batter IS being mass-produced as I write this, and it appears that it is going to be a wrecking ball to the ICE vehicle industry. Tesla is partnering with CATL to build a manufacturing plant in America to build CATL's battery design - which shows you just how brilliant Elon Musk is. When vehicles like the Model Y get this battery, there will be huge numbers of new EV adopters because EVs are superior to ICE vehicles in almost every metric. Range, longevity and functionality in cold and hot temperatures have been the factors holding back EVs from taking over the auto industry and it appears that CATL has solved those problems. BTW, CATL's new battery uses LFP chemistry and it should last 15 - 20 years. Toyota has always been a tech dinosaur but because its vehicles were reliable, people bought them. American car manufacturers have spent decades screwing their customers with bug-ridden cars and trucks and so Toyota STILL has the five bestselling cars in America today. That will change radically within the next two to three years unless Toyota's mythical solid-state battery becomes a reality. And even if it does, Toyota's tech and software suck, and they are proving that they will screw their customers just like American manufacturers. Tesla appears to be trying to take Toyota's place as the most trusted vehicle manufacturer, and they are doing a pretty damn good job. I own a used 2022 Model 3, which I bought with 77,000 miles on it. So far I have been stunned at how good it is. For example, I lost my key card, which is the way that you turn on the car if you don't have your phone linked to it. It is like a key fob on ICE vehicles but much more convenient to use. So, I could only use my phone to drive my Model 3, and I did not have the card as a backup. I set up a service appointment with Tesla and they sent a tech to my house and programmed two new cards for $53.00. I was stunned at how reasonably priced this service was. Toyota charges you something like $175.00 for a single key fob. Another example is that unless you put an aftermarket screen on your Model 3 air intake to the radiator (yes, it has two radiators that are used to cool the batteries), debris and bugs build up on it and it is difficult to get to the two radiators to clean them. I spoke to a Tesla tech at a Tesla service center about the issue and asked what it would cost to clean the radiator. He told me that Tesla will REPLACE the radiator with a new on for $550.00, which is amazing. It's a LOT of work to replace these radiators and to replace them for $550.00 with a brand new one is an amazing deal. Toyota would easily charge more than twice that amount to replace one of their radiators. You can also clean the radiators yourself, but you have to remove the front bumper and pressure wash them. So if you are willing to spend 5-6 hours of your time, you can service the radiators yourself. Toyota is slowly committing suicide in real-time right in front of our eyes. I am thinking of shorting the stock because of this. And all of this destruction Toyota has brought on itself because of its arrogance.

I’m no Toyota fan & haven’t owned one for maybe 30 years or so, but still, they would seem to bring out a bogan rabble with present blog-faux ‘media’ complaining about them constantly. Surely it would be in everyone’s best interest if they succeed and this includes EVs, solid state batteries and the rest. What also seems to be ignored if their now significant partnering with Chines companies (just like the EU) and including BYD and CATL - also being aware of the fact that the Chinese govt have just put billions into CATL to speed-up solid state battery development. So, by no means a Toyota fanboy but am becoming very tired of everyone shouting at them while German and US companies get away with everything despite some very poor historical form there.

I think if you have created Lexus and a legendary V8, switching over to making ev must feel like losing one's religion, I too will find it hard to have the mojo to reinvent the wheel. We should ask ice engineers what it is like to have to think of motors and betteries instead of cylinders and transmission. Now I think I understand why kodak, Nokia or even nakamichi with its cassette player fell so hard, it is because when the company has a winning strategy or product, it will become some sort of holy grail and no one will dare to question it.

I agree re dealerships, but it's not like Tesla has a sterling reputation AT ALL re service. Also, ALL car companies have a dealership reputation problem. In fact, no Tesla service centers in my state at all means no Teslas for me until/unless they fix that or get a meaningful number of local authorized service outfits for their cars. For me, servicing cars should be CONVENIENT. A nice thing about Toyotas tends to be that there are a LOT of places that will do a competent job of servicing your car. Aside from buying the car, I haven't been in a Toyota dealership for nearly 30 years, and I drive Toyotas consistently. My mechanics in walking distance of my house tell me they will continue to service Toyota hybrids, no problem.

To all the Toyota Butt Lickers!

With an EV vehicle, all the regular maintenance work involved can be DIY (tire rotation, alignment, cabin filter change, etc.) without any worry that your spark plugs are busted or oil change, etc. etc. etc.

Resale value of 2018 Toyotas is excellent in 2024. But for resale values of 2024 models, you'll have to examine the conditions in 2030, when your car will be twice as valuable as your wife's. Why? Competition for used gas cars will be NEW EVs, which will be cheaper to buy, cheaper to fuel, cheaper to maintain. The EV market will change as charging becomes ubiquitous. Gas-only stations will begin closing -- not only because of EVs, but because the ICE fleet is shrinking (it peaked in 2017) AND becoming more efficient. People will find out that charging is better than gassing; apartments, condos and even Airbnbs will have to offer at least level 1 charging or lose potential rent money. Cars that can drive themselves will be more valuable than cars that can't. And cars that can become robotaxis will be waaaaaaaay more valuable than cars that can't, even if they are never switched to robotaxi mode. Cars that can OTA update will be more valuable than cars that can't. In five years all new cars should be OTA updating, and used cars that don't have it will seem dumber. Because they really will be!
