3rd Gen Toyota Tacoma Complete Auxiliary Power Kit By Overland Equipped
In this video, I will show you a quick step-by-step install of this auxiliary power kit (created by Overland Equipped). This auxiliary power kit includes a custom bracket that allows a bolt-on installation (free from any custom modification). The kit includes a 12-circuit fuse panel and a 100 amp circuit breaker to protect the fuse panel.
Please note that manual transmission Tacomas will need to relocate the clutch master cylinder (additional information and instructions can be found on Overland Equipped's website).
I installed this Auxiliary Power Kit on my 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4 (automatic transmission).
You can purchase this kit from Overland Equipped on their website:
overlandequipp...
I plan to use this product to help power all of the aftermarket electrical components (light bars, ditch lights, and other various electrical components) that I will install in the future.

So that's cool. You installed a fuse box. Are you going to make a follow up on how you are using it?

That is a great idea 💡. So far I've used it for the demon eyes that I put into my headlamps and the underglow lights... I am currently ramping up for some additional electrical accessories in the next couple of videos (a hidden / stealth light bar, an air compressor, and eventually a winch), so this is a great suggestion! I will definitely have to do an updated review. 🙂

Great video! I had a question. I am new to wiring and have a very basic understanding of electrical. Why would one opt to use this particular setup? I have also seen other setups like (SPOD) & (Switch Pro). I am thinking at most in the future, I would want to run an on-board air compressor, maybe a light bar or two, possibly some ditch lights, and some other possible aux lights. How would I know what setup to go with for my particular application?
@LevelUpMechanics

Honestly, any of these options (including this one) should be able to run the accessories you want to use. I went with this particular setup because it allows me the freedom to use it however I see fit (not to mention the fact that this setup costs only a fraction of the price when compared to the SPOD or SWITCH PRO). The other options seem to look like they are more "plug & play" for electrical accessories, but you have to use their products (like switch panels) to do so. This is a great option if you don't have the knowledge / experience / know-how to wire up accessories correctly & safely, but again, you are going to pay a "pretty penny" for it. I use the Overland Equipped option because it is more budget-friendly and it allows me to create my own circuits however I want. If you know how to wire up switches and relays and have a decent idea of how DC circuitry operates, then this is a great option. However, if you just want to power up an electrical accessory and have a "plug & play" power supply unit take care of the hassles of switches & relays, then the other options mentioned previously will definitely do the trick for sure (but again, you will be paying a bit more $$$ for the convenience). If I were you, I'd plan out exactly what I want to install on my vehicle, how much current (amperage / AMPS) each item will use (usually no more than 30 amps per item), and then choose which power supply will accommodate your choices (and if you want to use your own relays & switches, or if you want to have a plug & play switch solution). I hope this helps...

@@LevelUpMechanics Thank you so much this was super helpful! I am still navigating my way around all of this stuff and you are definitely leading me in the right direction. Last questions! In what instance would you use that circuit breaker? Would it trip automatically if it detects an excessive load? Also when you plan on installing your additional accessories that require switches, will you install a separate switch panel, or just individual switches and relays if required? Thanks again!

The bracket is very sturdy 👍. It does not feel "flimsy" at all... unfortunately, I do not know the thickness of the brushed aluminum bracket at the moment.

Sorry for the late reply... here is an amazon link to the relays that I use. ONLINE LED STORE 6 Pack Bosch... www.amazon.com/dp/B01KVZ2MU4?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share One thing I wish this setup had was a dedicated space for relays (that were built into / next to the fuse panel) to keep everything secure & organized... however, for what it is, I am happy with this setup. I hope this info helps! 😁

I am new to these kits (which are awesome.) Question- I've seen other videos where relays are being incorporated and tied in. Are they not necessary on this kit?
@LevelUpMechanics
@LevelUpMechanics 3 жыл бұрын
It really depends on what you are trying to power and how you turn that particular component on. Long story short, it would be wise to use a relay when you want a switch (which can only handle a small amount of current - 3 amps) to turn on a high powered light bar / air compressor / etc (which needs a lot of current - 30 amps for example). A relay basically allows a low-current circuit (aka the switch) to turn on / control a high powered circuit (aftermarket accessory). If you tried to send power directly through the switch without a relay, you would melt the switch and could potentially create a nasty electrical issue / fire 🔥. If you have the option, definitely choose the "relay-incorporated" option. I use relays in conjunction with this kit (the relays I use are just mounted in different locations) ...

Is the 100 amp breaker overkill? I am planning to add ditch lights and a grill light bar to my taco and would prefer to use a fuse box like this instead of wiring directly to terminals. Since I'm only drawing a max of 30 amps, should I still get the 100 amp breaker?
@LevelUpMechanics
@LevelUpMechanics 3 жыл бұрын
I would recommend it, yes. If you plan on using multiple accessories at the same time (ditch lights, grill lights, and any future mods) the fuses help to protect your individual accessories from unwanted amperage spikes, but the circuit breaker will help to protect the entire fuse panel from an overload of multiple accessories being run at the same time. If you only plan on using one or two accessories, you could be okay without it. But extra safety is always a good thing. I hope this info helps! 👍

Does this system account for your individual relays?
@LevelUpMechanics
@LevelUpMechanics 3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, no. I'd imagine you could buy an aftermarket fuse block that includes spots to add relays. For my Tacoma, I tend to add individual relays next to the circuits I want to tap into to control my relays. However, I do agree that not having a spot for relays on this kit is definitely an oversight that should be rectified. It's not a deal-breaker for me, but it would be nice to have all of the fuses and relays in one spot for better wire management & organization.

I am just wondering how easy it is to open up the normal Toyota fuse box it looks a little tight I’m not sure if you can get your hand down there to open the catch so does that mean you have to take the whole thing out just to change fuses?
@LevelUpMechanics
@LevelUpMechanics 3 жыл бұрын
As soon as I saw your comment, I went to go check first-hand to see. You are correct. It is definitely a little cumbersome to remove the lid to the fuse panel (but not impossible). It took me about 2 minutes to get to the fuses. The lid has 3 plastic release tabs (the side one is easy, but both the front & back tabs are a little annoying to release). In the end though, it's a minor inconvenience since I can still access the fuse panel. Every mod seems to have some pros & cons, but I really appreciate you for pointing 👉 that out to me! It's always good to know these things!

Thanks for the heads up! On their website, they do mention that the bracket is very close to the brake level sensor wiring harness and recommend to secure the harness away from the bracket for this exact concern you speak of. A little electrical tape &/or a well-placed zip tie is highly recommended for peace-of-mind 👍
