3rd Gen Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4 - Look below to find links for the OEM Power Tailgate Lock Kit and tools I used in this video!
In this video, I will show you how to install the OEM Power Tailgate Lock Kit (available in 2 sizes) from Toyota. Adding this kit will allow you to automatically lock/unlock your tailgate anytime you lock/unlock your 3rd Gen Taco!
Please note: Even though Toyota states that this kit is only for 2019+ Tacomas, the kit should work for any 3rd Gen Tacoma with power locks (mine is a 2017).
Below are links to both the "short wheelbase" and "long wheelbase" OEM Power Tailgate Lock Kits from Toyota (available on Amazon):

Thank you so much for the awesome video. As a relatively novice tinkerer, this was tremendously helpful. Wish I took a photo of the clips between the tailgate and bed before removing them - took a while to figure out how they were positioned when clipping the new ones back in. And, wish I knew I needed something more substantial than the cutters I had in order to cut the ends of the metal zip ties, but now have a pair of proper snips for the future. Was quoted $800+ for the install (in SoCal). You saved me quite a bit! Cheers.

@JoeK0322 the labor should be just 1 to 2 hours, if you pay them to install it... but doing it yourself is pretty easy since it's pretty much "plug & play". They probably just want a 3-6 hour "window" because they have multiple appointments to manage for the day.

Great video - really helped me install one on my 2020. Have no idea why this isn't standard on all Taco's but probably is with newer models. The hardest part was the darn rubber grommet plug and crawling underneath to fish the line and put on the zip ties. Thanks again!

Installed mine about a month ago. Purchased from my local dealer who said they always have them in stock because it is one of the most requested from customers. One thing no one ever says about this install is that there are no instructions included with the kit. You can request them from the dealer or download them from the internet. Very comprehensive, detailed instructions from Toyota. Cost is more than aftermarket but well worth it! Good video!

Great detailed vid and install! Thanks for sharing! I previously bought a Pop n' Lock that now has crapped out after a few years and I purchased this very same OEM part. Couple of things I would've done differently is gone through the cabin floor grommet rather than discarding it (though I'm not sure that is possible if the connectors on each end are too large), and I wouldn't tie everything down until testing the function. I'll find out first hand when I install mine. Clean job!
@LevelUpMechanics

Actually, this OEM power lock kit comes with a wire harness that has a floor grommet built onto the harness itself! You'll see when you get the kit 👍👍. As far as testing is concerned, I did test it before tying everything down (I just did it off-camera 😆).

This is a must have if your Tacoma didn’t come stock with it. The piece of mind you get knowing that your tailgate is locked every time you lock the doors is worth every dollar spent. I just completed the install. The only part that gave me difficulties was running the tailgate harness through the new grommets and getting those reinstalled. It’s pretty tight in there and it took me several attempts to finally get it right. Having access to a lift would have been a plus, but it can be done without one.

The Toyota grommet is taped to the cable for proper location, but it seems to line up w/ center bar between the two doors. Something doesn't seem right??? I guess I pop out the existing grommet w/ cable, slice a side open, put the new cable through it, and silicone when done?????

You could definitely do the silicone modification for the grommet & existing cable, if need be. Just be careful not to cut any wiring by accident (and make sure you disconnect the negative battery cable first). I wish I could provide more assistance, but it sounds like you have the right idea. @@LevelUpMechanics I noticed this morning that my BSM is giving me a warning "Check BMS system" message. Do you know what might be causing this? Thanks!
@LevelUpMechanics
@LevelUpMechanics Жыл бұрын
BSM stands for "Blind Spot Monitor." I would double-check the connectors by the passenger front kick panel to make sure that everything is correct. Worst case scenario, you could unplug the tailgate lock harness and reconnect the original connectors together again and see if the "BSM" message goes away. If it doesn't, chances are likely that the problem isn't related to the tailgate lock harness... I highly doubt the tailgate lock harness would be the reason for this issue, but temporarily unplugging it would let you know for sure (either way). Keep me posted, as this would be the first time I've heard of the OEM tailgate lock causing an issue with other electrical components...

I just installed this kit. I could see that I needed more clearance to fit the wire protectors at the tailgate and the bed. I rigged a small platform with a piece of plywood and a bench. The plywood rested on the bumper and the bench. I partially removed the tailgate on the passenger side, angled it rearward several inches, and laid it on the platform. The extra three inches of space made this part of the job much easier.

Now you have a hole under the seat for water to splash up into. You should have cut the plug that was in there in the middle and pushed the wiring thru keeping that seal in place. Maybe a little silicone to make it water tight too. Other than that not bad at all.

The power tailgate wire harness already comes with a grommet built onto it in order to seal / cover the hole under the seat. Everything is OEM, and there are no issues with water intrusion... The kit is a little pricey, but it is definitely worth it, in my opinion 😁👍

You cannot install the wire harness on the driver side, it doesn't work that way. You have to install the wire harness on the passenger side, no matter what. The connectors you plug into are only found on the passenger side. As far as unlocking is concerned, you will have to press the key fob unlock button once to unlock the driver front door and a 2nd time to unlock the rest of the doors (and the tailgate). I hope this info helps! 😁

If you know what you're doing, it would probably take about 1 hour to install everything. If you need to take your time, then probably 2 hours lol 😆. I honestly do not know. If your factory Tacoma key does not have a lock / unlock button on it, then there's a pretty good chance that the factory kit won't work (but i do not know 100%for sure). You may have better results by integrating an aftermarket Pop & Lock Kit (or the Runnin4Tacos version) to your aftermarket keyless entry system. I would probably go this route if I were in your situation. I wish I could provide more accurate info, but I hope this helps out 😁👍.

Will this lock my leer camper shell as well? If not, is there a way to wire this were it will lock both leer camper shell and tailgate at same time? I am pulling power for the Camper shells brake light through the back left tail light. Any help is appreciated. :)
@LevelUpMechanics
@LevelUpMechanics Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, this kit is only designed to lock & unlock the tailgate. My dad has a Leer camper shell on his Tundra that has 2 handles (one on each side of the back window) that have lock cylinders built into the handles. I assume this is the same for your shell? If so, you would need some sort of mechanism (controlled by an electrical circuit) that would physically move the position of each handle into a locked / unlocked position when commanded electronically (some type of power lock / unlock mechanism). Unfortunately, I do not know if Leer makes a power lock mechanism for their products, but if they did, then theoretically you could wire it to lock & unlock the topper in conjunction with the tailgate OEM power lock kit. I just don't know if there is an option available to actually do this. I wish I could be of more help. It looks like it may be possible that Pop & Lock actually makes a solution to add power locks to the Leer camper shell. I would recommend doing a quick Google search to see the options that they provide, based on the shell model that you currently have. Happy hunting! 😁

Yes, you can still lock & unlock the tailgate manually with the key 🔑. I have verified this. The actuator rod that attaches to the hinge for the key lock cylinder is a "floating" rod, meaning that you could pull / push the rod in an out manually with your hands (without powering the actuator). The actuator itself does not lock into an open / closed position. It just moves the hinge that has the hardware attached to lock 🔐 / unlock the tailgate (just like the key lock cylinder does).
