A late comment to this thread from an owner of a 2002 Tacoma. The four bolts are torqued to 50 lb-ft per the factory service manual which agrees with the earlier comments. You made a verbal comment regarding someone who said the seal was not installed far enough into the axle tube. As it turns out there are two different designs for the seal installation, and you are working on a truck without ABS brakes. With ABS, there is a tone ring on the axle which results in the seal being installed much further down in the tube to allow for the length of the tone ring and retainer.

This was great, thank you for the tutorial. I wish I watched this before I purchased the parts because I mistakenly assumed that the wheel bearing was required. My bearing is not loose or noisy, so I'll shelve that for the future. This looks like a very straightforward repair.

I find your videos extremely educational!!!!! Not all of us grew up learning about vehicle maintenance and repair. I sure did not. I do know how to change the motor oil and filter, as well as rotate the tires. However, I'm just getting too old to perform these maintenance items because I have no lift. I do enjoy watching your videos because it makes me aware of the things I should keep an eye on. You really make the repairs seem easy. This is a trait of a Master Mechanic! Keep up the good work!

Great video 👍 I’m learning so much from your techniques and your knowledge you share with your subscribers. I’ll be doing this task on my son’s 08 Tacoma 4x4 right rear seal. Nearby shop was charging him over $1,100 telling him he has a bad wheel bearing and will need to replace the entire assembly. That’s not even including replacing the drum brakes which is in need of replacing. Glad I subscribed and will be sharing the good news with my son.

I'm glad you showed the rear diff breather, when it gets clogged it is unable to vent the pressure which eventually busts the rear axle seals. This is the 1st part I replaced on my 3rd gen after I bought it with 232K miles on the clock and sure enough, it took lots of deep creep lube to free it up. Luckily the axle seals were bone dry, from the outside, but I'm too afraid to look inside the gears by removing the abs sensor... Ignorance is bliss! :)

Doin this job for sure...like this week ;) Thanks for having great camera angles/focus on the seals that I need. I let mine seep for about 30k miles, but also had clogged axle vent when it started, and it only seemed to "leak" when it was like 100f or so. I'm in the middle of replacing the whole barke system on mine so it's time to deal with the rear axle seals, but a near fatal front axle seal failure made me finally take it apart and order new cv's, lower ball joints, and a whole new brake system (330k miles on it, I bought it at 267k). I replaced the suspension with a full old man emu setup/upper arms, when I bought it. So, I'm looking forward to watching your timing belt and valve cover gasket vids for my next phase ;)

I removed the axle vent on my 2002 Tacoma and it went poof letting the pressure out telling me that it was clogged. I think I caught it soon enough before any other damage was done. Less then ten dollars is a cheap fix for the piece of mind.

Hi, loved the video. Perhaps u would know: can the differential fluid leaking out of the wheel cylinder cause the vsc and trac off lights to illuminate?I don't see it referenced in the service manual but after seeing this video it seems like it could be a possibility, no? I'm not sure if having those lights illuminated on dash(no CEL) will abort a smog check or not but it's coming up in December so I'm trying to figure it out before then. Thanks man, again: very thorough and precise direction, well enunciated qs well.

I have put in two OEM driver axle seals. They are pressed in all the way. Just had the axles rebuilt by AAMCO. Made sure vent is not cloged and driver rear axle still leaks. Im wondering if its possible something might not have been built correctly on that shaft to keep causing the leak? This is on an 03 sequoia
@brianbumgardner87044 жыл бұрын
I hope you checked the differential vent, in many cases these are the cause of an axle seal leak.

Thank you for your videos, I really appreciate them. I have a question about blown axle seal. I think my driver side axle seal is leaking but it is hard to tell. I took off my drum and I definitely have some wet stuff in my drum and in my bake area. but also, which I have-not seen anywhere on the internet, but the backing plate (facing towards middle of truck) is completely covered in grime and dirt while the passenger side backing plate is completely clean. is this a common symptom of axle seal leaking?

Gear oil, and you pour it in until it comes back out the fill hole. If you haven't changed it recently, you should change now, instead of just topping it off.

Hello my Toyota Maintenance friend. I responded to another one of your videos regarding the rear axle seal job on a 3rd Gen Toyota 4runner. The same issue I mentioned in that video holds true for 1st Gen Tacomas. The seal was redesigned by Toyota sometime in the past. By simply replacing the seal and not addressing the mating of the retainer with the seal, the seal lip will barely be riding on the polished shoulder of the retainer. When we did this job on a 3rd Gen 4runner with a non-ABS rearend, we determined it was pretty much mandatory to flip the orientation of the retainer (bevel facing the bearing) in order to get a good mating between the retainer and the seal. This video details what I'm talking about: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rL1iaMuntKqsk6c.html
