I own a 2008 Tundra with the 5.7 and 4 wheel drive. I've owned this truck since 2009, as I traded an 07 Silverado 2500 HD with Duramax on the Tundra with 26,000 miles. Eleven years and 150 thousand miles later, I have never regretted the trade. My Tundra has pulled my 20’ gooseneck stock trailer loaded with horses, my 24’ gooseneck flatbef loaded with well over 12,000 lbs of hay and my 4740 Kubota tractor with.front loader and 6’ brushhog. It's never failed me, still runs like a top, and will be with me for as long as I am able to drive. Toyota hit a home run with these trucks. No, it's not a gas miser but I can still average 17 mpg at highway speeds of 65-70. Keep your Tundras, because I'm hearing rumors that the 2021 will be the last year of the 5.7. I'm hearing a turbo v6 or 4.

Great video..I have this identical truck. In 2012 when I wanted to do my first transmission drain, toyota of Las Vegas told me never, never , never change transmission fluid or antifreeze in these trucks. Its a life time fluid. So I ordered all parts and fluids online. Of course I don't believe nothing dealership told me because my experience with cars i knew they were lying to me. All fluids break down especially in a Hell Hole like Las Vegas summer heat. Im so glad I serviced it myself. The fluid after just 4 years of driving was completely BLACK and antifreeze was not same consistency. Also on this truck which mine was built in Texas the water pump went out at 5k. Toyota replaced under warranty and again it went out at 26k. On Second failure, I fixed it myself. Ive a few other things wrong and had them do the work just to find out they did nothing.. Toyota dealerships here in Las Vegas have been dishonest with me so it forced me to work on my own truck. It's very big and requires more effort. Thats why I took it in to dealership in the past. 2020 my truck has 102k miles and my baby is going strong. My point is my friend its nice to see such an honest human being in you. The dealer will never, never, never tell the truth because they don't know the truth. No matter what some manual or dealer says, Transmission fluid breaks down and loses it's ability to do it's job, period.. Exact oil and fluids science has progressed so far that we know absolutely for sure this so. Always flush the trans through the cooler line, always pull the drain plug and clean the magnet first, always change the filter and clean the inside of the pan and magnets before doing any flushing, Always. There is no such thing as Lifetime fluid. All you have to do is a little research and you will find this out very easily for yourself. AmsOil alone has many, many technical bulletins written about this. Just watch one of the flushing videos about this on Don Smith channel, AmsOil isn't the only company that knows this. If you want to save thousands of dollars and not get stranded somewhere with your expired warranty , then do a little checking. Ask the same question to ten "real" mechanics and hopefully at least one of them will tell you the same thing I just wrote. Same thing with the transaxle and front and rear differentials, the oil in them gets worn out too. When you have metal gears spinning like that, the gears wear down and the little particles of metal start tearing stuff up, Fast. Why do you think there's a Magnet on the drain plugs of these components?? To catch the broken/ worn particles, and stop them from destroying the rotating metal gears. Pure fact right there. Bottom line is; changing the fluid early and often is way, way cheaper then a yet another new car, or giving away yet another 2 or 3 Grand for a new transmission. I hope at least one person will save their cash and protect your investment. Jim Tree. Thank you.

I changed the transmission fluid of a 2002 sienna for the first time at 180K a few years ago, no codes but cold it was horrible trying to get out of the gears. When i drained the torque converter, it looked like mud. I was embarrassed but it was my first try at transmission fluid changes. I dropped the pan changed filter and gasket and slightly tightened all the small bolts in valve body while it was open. Put back together and drive 2K miles then drop and refilled about 3.5 more qts and transmission felt new. This cold issue was gone. Aisin transmissions are bulletproof. Van is still running. Last I knew it had 253K.

I could not sleep at nigh because I did not have money to buy new transmission. 100 miles later I changed fluid again because it got worse. This is why you buy a Toyota. You want all the bells and whistles you get a GM, Ford or Chrysler vehicle. Toyotas might not have as many fancy features but you will have a vehicle that lasts. Help, i need some good advice please. To the point. 2006 Sienna XLE , just bought a year ago with 231000 miles, obvious lack of maintenance done by previous owner. Transmission fluid looks a little on the dark side, especially at tip of dipstick. Should i flush and replace filter or just drain and refill it? I have done two drain and refills so far. I still have lag of shifting occasionally ( it try's/ lags, goes neutral, to find gear for downshifts into second on a slow down of rpm) . Sometimes it shifts weird going into third , i guess, could be fourth when I'm normally driving, it but does shift anyway. You said you flushed yours at 250,000. Did it have any drain and fills previous to that? I use only toyota fluids and filters. I just hope i can find out what to do. Thanks.

@@bobr2959 Hi Bob. Did it throw any codes? Any code history? I’m not familiar with that certain transmission however it doesn’t sound positive. Prob time to seek a second opinion my friend. Jumping out of gear typically is a mechanical problem not a fluid issue unless you have very little fluid. If you’re super lucky it could be something simple like a motor mount being loose and causing a fantom linkage shift but again you need a professional at this point. If there’s no codes then we can rule out an electronic/programming/VCM problem. Good luck.

Some mechanics say you should never flush a transmission with 237,000 miles on it like mine. It's so confusing. Maybe a new filter would help it, i don't know. Maybe thats the ticket, i don't know.

@@bobr2959 I agree. But there’s different ways to “flush” a transmission. The proper way is to disconnect the supply hose to the trans cooker and bypass it. The wrong way is to use a pressurized machine that uses chemicals that are not designed to aid. You can actually do more harm than good by taking short cuts or using machines/fluids that were never intended for long term maintenance.

Peter, my wife and I are retired and on a fixed income, so taking care of our vehicle is a high priority. We recently purchased from a retired widow, a one owner, 2005 Lexus RX 330, with 53,000 original miles. The engine oil was the only regular maintenance performed since it was purchased. The first thing we did was to have all the fluids changed.....including the rear differential. Now here is my question: because the vehicle is 15 years old, should we replace the “timing belt”, all drive belts along with a new water pump? Because of its age? I’m not looking to spend money just to waste it, but I worry that the timing belt, because of age, not mileage, might be showing signs of fatigue or cracking. Could you please help us by telling us what you recommend? We are hoping this vehicle lasts us for many years to come. Thank you Peter for your conscientious approach to maintenance. We watch your videos faithfully. Please help us. -Stephen & Julita, Ohio

It blows my mind how improper maintenance or the lack thereof is so common... if you have a late model Toyota transmission you had better realize they only like OEM WS (check the year to be certain) transmission fluid. And you MUST verify fluid level at a set temperature on level ground. In the past I’ve measured exact amount out and in, but to be certain you should always just do a level check per factory manual.

First Toyota I owed was a 2001 tacoma with 90k bought from a friend and he never changed the tranny fluid since dealer told him it didn't need charging. I decided to change it due to I felt gears where shifting a little harsh. I used Toyota fluid and performed a drain and fill 3 times and what do you know Truck started shifting like a dream. From there on I performed drain and fill every 30k. J currently have a Tundra with 35k and plan on doing the same service to it. Do use the Toyota fluid or a quality replacement.

I recently had my 09 Toyota tundra not shift past fourth gear with many lights flashing on the dash (also limited throttle). I reset the code, PO 794, a few times. I ended up changing the fluid and it’s been running great for the last 2000 miles. I think these transmissions are sensitive to worn fluid. Or maybe these are just Christmas miracles!

Yeah, if Toyota can't offer the right type of oil to their customers to put in their car/truck maintenance. That's why you see this kind of stuffs happening to customers who tried to maintain their own cars. I my self tried to purchase engine oil for my 2016 Toyota Sequoia, Toyota couldn't sell me any engine oil. I've checked when I was under warranty, the first 5 free oil changes, at the dealership, they were using 8 time 1 GAL of 0W20 oil. Now I don't recall what brand it was. But when I went to the part department at the dealership, to get the same type of oil where using for the free oil change, they told me they donn't haven and can't sell me any engine oil. They told me they're only use bulk oil in their shop and that they don't have 1 GAL container to sell me. The same thing happened when I was doing my wife's power steering flush. different Toyota dealership, I couldn't buy genuine power steering fluid from Toyota dealer for my 2010Toyota Camry. They're kind of forcing customers to have to take their cars in the dealership for service. Probably the same thing for transmission and transfer case fluid. Not sure If I can get a genuine oil from Toyota dealership. I'll ask and try to get it so I can maintain my car properly.

Start draining what's in the pan and filling the drained amount. Do it every 10K miles for about 5 times. This way you are not introducing 100% brand new oil. I did this to my 225 K mile driven Land Cruiser. Use OEM oil only.
