Yeah, it's grown on me. You can probably get a cool grill on the aftermarket anyway. It has been modernized. If someone is buying a truck because they want a hot tub or sauna in the tailgate prob aren't worrying about money or reliability.

Well said. This is why the 95,000 dollar Ford Lightning and other new trucks are so ridiculous. No one in their right mind pays that sort of money for a light duty, non industrial, vehicle designed to haul and tow things, and that depreciates. Truck prices are just insane. I know gas isn’t 59 cents a gallon like it was in my youth, but 70, 80…100,000 prices are absurd. These amounts are MORTGAGE money. I guess my generation will have to die off before truck manufacturers can get EVERYONE to think those are normal prices for a truck.

To play the devil's advocate; there are pick up trucks ranging from $22k (base maverick) - $100k+ (raptor r), so there is something for every budget. So, while you may not want to spend $70k+ on a truck, you don't have to but it is nice that the other options exist for those that want/choose to spend that much. It is cool to see TRX and Raptors on the road, even if looking from a lesser truck.

Given the tundra might not change for another 14 years toyota needed to move past a v8. Hybrid, then full electric at some point soon.

But like any other Toyota in 5 years it will still sell for 60k so if you sell in 5 years the TRUE cost of ownership is $2,000 a year plus whatever interest.

$70k that’s 3/4 and 1 ton money. You can get a whole lot more truck with that kind of money. I just traded my tundra for a F250 diesel and it’s a world of difference. More Hp and torque and towing capabilities while getting 20mpg

All Toyota dealerships I've talked to are promising MSRP pricing with no markup. I also don't think any trim will cross the $70,000 mark.

Option it with the iforcemax, panoramic roof, 14 inch screen, power rear window, automatic running boards and maybe air suspension and 6.5 bed, pending what the subtotal is. Im good to go. If the truck ends up over 60K before dealer markup, im chucking up the deuce. ✌️peace out suckas. Not good to go into too much debt during this inflationary environment. And another big wave of inflation coming soon. Commodities first then toys.

Love the flat floor in the back seat and generator in the bed. Also love the power tailgate coming up and down with the press of the remote. Only minor thing I dislike is the folding shifter and capless fuel. And you can still get that v8...

@@xctrack17 100% NOT a miss. All batteries goes bad, toyota has an easy way to replace it, Ford does not. it'll cost an arm and leg for the labor repair. And nobody even uses the inverter that much. Andre has the Ford and even said so.

You are correct. I do have one idea as to why they redesigned. Unifying the platforms. They had to use the same frame, engine, transmission as the Land Cruiser; everything else had to be changed because of this.

No offence, but I hope you are wrong. If the most important thing to you is price, there are plenty of domestic vehicles available. The reason I have been a die hard fan of toyota my entire life is because real life usability and reliability has always been the "most important thing" to toyota. It's the reason I still drive a 30 year old toyota with over 400,000km that never let me down. Obviously we all want low prices, but in the end you get what you pay for.

@@es4326 You miss the entire point of my comment. You're saying something literally everyone already knows. This isn't about owning a vehicle for 30 years, it's about conquest sales. Getting new customers and more market share is the only thing that's going to ensure the Tundra has a long production life. They ate terribly low sales for more than a decade as a placeholder, and now it's their time to shine. They must do it, and getting new customers means having reasonable prices.

Im considering the same package too. I hear the Limited with TRD Off Road Package will have the Hybrid option which is a must for me. I dont care so much for the badging and suspension on the TRD Pro because I would probably change it anyways. All i want is the Hybrid, Rear Locker, and Crawl Control. Boom! TRD Off Road Limited!

Same could have been said for Ford and all the testing they did on the Ecoboost prior to its release, but real world and testing world is different

I think that you'll be disappointed with the service and towing life vs your Ram. They have had numerous issues with the new Tundra, like any new vehicle. The Ram is being moderately redesigned foe 2023. That's probably a safer bet for now IMHO.

enough with the reliability, Toyota's are, at best marginally more reliable than others. And a key factor in the Tundra's reliability is owner surveys indicate Tundra's overwhelmingly are purchased as grocery getters.

@@Steve-yr5vi I would have to agree and disagree I would say Toyota is far more reliable than the big 3 up to 150k and then they pretty much have the same issues if worked. The biggest reason Toyota is much better is because they do not change the drive trains every year like the big 3 Ram has learned this they find something that works well and keeps it gm and ford change configuration of power trains like underwear

If they manage 5 or more mpg they'll be just fine. Thats alot of fuel savings on annual basis all by itself. If they crack 24 to 26 in the hybrid it makes reliability mute within reason.

@@bigcjm so a 2wd would get 20 and a 4x4 17 that's pretty poor considering both a f250 gas and 2500hd 4x4 gas gets 15-16mpg. I just want the diesel in them like all other countries get except us

Almost all trucks are used as grocery-getters and the domestics don't even hold up to that. I've had several Chevy and Dodge and had issues with all of them. I'll admit I haven't had a newer Ford, my ancient F250 was a good truck, but I'm hearing nothing good about the newer ones. I've never had serious issues with any of my Toyota vehicles. (I've never owned a Tundra) I've got a 15 year old 4Runner with 163K that runs and drives new.

Other brands have more towing, payload, features like fords self driving and a better interior.

@@mattgray6436 You are correct that other manufacturers post the bigger numbers. However I will never be towing or hauling anywhere near a max load in a 1/2 ton truck. If I needed to tow or haul heavy I would get a heavy duty truck. As far as interior is concerned....well we will have to wait and see what the Toyota is actually like. I do like the F150 Platinum interior that I have now but I am willing to consider all of them when I buy next year. If I want to use self driving I will take my Tesla. I am just glad to see that Toyota is stepping up their game because it makes for better vehicles for us all to choose from.

The main reason it’s in the cab is for temperature control to get more longevity. But yes definitely a plus when it comes to changing it. Which after owning a Prius will be at least 10 years or more down the road. If anyone actually keeps it that long. Most people that can afford a new tundra won’t be keeping it over 10 years I’d suspect.

Or is it someone that does not really care about the pros and cons of each product? I mean that is a ridiculous statement. I currently drive a Ford F150 but that does not mean that my next truck will be one. I will certainly consider the 4 top players in the US when it comes time. Even though I have had favorable experiences with my last two F150s that doesn't mean I won't buy a Tundra or a Sierra/Silverado or Ram. I will have to carefully consider each of them for their strengths and weaknesses. Obviously if I needed a 3/4 or 1 ton I would not consider a Toyota but I don't need a heavy duty truck and to buy one would be silly.

You're damm lucky if your garage fits one. I'll have to build a house for that.. and i think you may lose too much headroom with the sunroof. Especially in the back.

@@mbukukanyau I've driven Fords for over 20 years as they are the in-plant rental trucks we are given at work. I could write a book about the constant problems with them but the short story is I would never own one personally. They barely get broke in good before the problems begin and in the shop all the time.

It's not competition with the big 3 otherwise they'll introduce heavy duty. Plan is to stay in their own lane of the avg Joe and stay true to reliability. That's cute, the "low sales" number doesn't reflect how good the tundra is.... if toyota switched their market into trucks, it's over for the big 3. And this is coming from a current F150 owner.

The tundra is a lifestyle vehicle more than it is an actual working man's truck. As far as this trucks relation to the big 3 go, it's nothing more than a catch up. Problem is Toyota being Toyota, its already foreshadowing obsolescence, and thats why if they did take the big 3 seriously, they'd fail. They can't afford to do the 4-5 year refreshing the big 3 can, while also topping them out in the numbers game. The big 3 is a whole different ball game in comparison to what toyotas philosophy is. Toyota doesnt do class leading numbers. People don't buy the big 3 for reliability, they do it for show. In 3 years, they're already moving on to another new truck to look on top. You can't do that with a tundra when its going to be the same thing 15 years in a row.

Do you want to pay some one when the battery finally goes bad to remove the cab to access battery vs the Tundra since it's not lithium ion a lot less chance of catching fire plus its a simple remove replace battery.

Definitely, but now days everyone wants a half ton truck with the interior of a Mercedes-Benz to tow 13,000lbs and have 3,000lbs of payload, go 0-60 in 4 seconds and ride like a luxury car and get the fuel economy of a prius.

@Daniel G You're missing the point he's making. Nobody uses their generator every day, but it's invaluable in those instances when you do need it. It's also very convenient to not have to buy a separate generator (which isn't cheap) and keep it in your bed, which takes up space.

I'm thinking the same thing. I'm not convinced of the new 2022 Tundra and not sure I can wait 2-3 years for the Lightning which I really want. In NorCal, it's good to have a backup power supply with rolling blackouts. I put a down payment on the Lightning but I'm number 11.5 million on the waitlist. LOL.

@@chrisi6776 the numbering system is kinda weird. They only have 150,000 reservations at this point. We did our reservation June first and it's something like 10 million. So there's something weird with their system. The lowest reservation number posted in the Lightning Facebook group so far is 10,814,188.

Depends on how you drive it. A heaby foot under stop and go traffic will definitely deplete it faster, but if you drive it with a light foot, release the gas and let the regenerative braking slow it down and keeo a good steady speed it will do pretty well I think.

But for love of physics please stop with proven time and again that displacement is no guarantee of superiority. We have seen smaller displacement force-fed engines in all kinds of road cars and race cars that, by the laws of physics, strongly disagree.

@@Amayi1 I am not speaking of only go and torque . I am well aware of how a turbo works , and the power and efficiency of these smaller turbo v6 engines . Although I am still not sold on the longevity of these engines when towing heaving loads day in and day out . But even if we assume the engineers got it right and these engines will last ... where they can never compete with a v8 for real truck duty is while towing and using the engine to be your brakes going down mountain passes with a heavy load. The smaller v6 simply does not have the displacement for this. I have driven many many miles in F150’s with both the 5.0 v8 .. and both ecoboost v6’s. And even empty without a trailer ... I find the v6’s tend to want to run away in you while coming down long mountain grades . So for this reason alone .. I am not a fan of these smaller turbo engines .

@@Amayi1 2JZ-GTE definitely comes to mind. That thing will reliably hold 1,000hp on stock internals. A well designed smaller engine can be durable. Might have to replace turbos here and there depending on how you drive it. The key is to always let it idle for a bit before turning the engine off to let the turbo cool down. That and regular oil changes with good oil are the key to turbo longevity.

Based on the interview with the Chief Engineer, I believe you can (roughly) calculate the mileage. He was focused more on range and less on MPG. So, take the previous version’s 17 MPG with a 38 Gallon tank - and that gets you about 646 miles. This version has a 32 Gallon tank, so if you do some “fancy math” with the same range, it gives you 20.2 MPG. I’m betting that I’m pretty close…

as a tacoma owner i didnt care about mpg ,im not a broke kid. i asked the dealership if i could order a tacoma with a v8,they told me no so i got the 6 .

@@AUav8r05 It has to come in around $60k fully loaded for a Trd Pro. The 2021 Raptor starts at a touch over $64k and this is nowhere near being a Raptor competitor.

I agree about the chrome. Especially the horse shoe shape around the grill of the Limited. Because of this one of the best looking trims is the SR5. The SR5 with a few options may be the way to go I would like to see this in other colors also.

I'm not ready for a Ford yet. I've already owned one of these before.
