I use a cheap chinesium dc/dc converter. The variable voltage goes in and constant out. 10a-12v to 80v in and adjustable 36v to 120v out. Only the amp's varies now and my grid-inverter runs longer and starts earlier by low winds.

Thanks for sharing, I am setting up a 24 volt system with solar. What I want to know, what can I set up using a VAWT to use more as a trickle charger to maintain my batteries during the night and on cloudy days?

Great Set ~ Up ! Love the way U presented it ! I’ve created a self-sufficient power supply ! “ It’s Mind~Bending Out/Of The Box workable ! But you need to be able to improvise with electronics and use pieces which would not be used for what you doing , but will Work ! A Car Alternator originally create Ac Current and it swaps the Ac Current into Dc , U following me ? Good I know you are , I’m a Gm man you can investigate which alternator is easier to convert over I thinks it’s a Jeep Alternator from around 1986 it’s high Amp at low turn / Low R.P.M for peak Amps , but here’s the thing you’re not going through the output on the alternator because the power has already been converted to DC you have to on the alternator when you takeoff the back cover the cage if the copper winding which goes around the inner part of the case on most alternative this three terminal leads which come on from the copper wire winding Ford has a Ford Master escape 150 amp alternator with five copper leads coming off what I understand every wire that comes off is another phase ! You use Romax wire because I had my voltmeter on one of my GM alternator AC current I recorded 1100 W that’s One Kw & 100 W’s now the amperage I have not checked , I’ve heard the Current is 115v @ 90A but I am not able to confirm that ! No I’m not you , you have 3 Alternators all powered by Dc motors with the speed controllers to dial in the proper RPM to get the Highest Volts & Amps my big block Chevy alternator low turn is about 2,000 rpm I’m hitting the 115v at 1,100 W = 1 W = 1,000W + the 100W you know you’re house conservatively used maybe what 500 hour ! I charge my battery banks 48v my Daily BMS ‘s are 48v 120A , I use a separate breaker box , I wire over all the main electricity pieces I will want to power if the grid goes down Kitchen, furnace, sump pump and a few bedrooms but running low - To ~ No Electricity , Solar panels & Wind Turbines charge controller to keep the battery banks full Lithium 3.2v 280Ah 2 48v Banks ! Great set~Up !

You have a blue and yellow wire going into the controller. Where do they connect? And where do they go? Also the blue and yellow wire on the top of the relay...what screws are they on in the controller? Thanks Curious on how you connect the cicuits.
@ToysforWatts
@ToysforWatts Жыл бұрын
those blue and yellow wires are two individual wires twisted together. They go from the switches to the relays. I'm not at my desk at present and the search feature here is rubbish, but I do have a video on how to wire up the A30 charge controllers and it'll show you where the wires go.

@ToysforWatts

Nope the inverters are good at matching line voltage/frequency...it's about the only thing they're really "good" at. My power provider doesn't like my setup and required me to have a UL approved disconnect between their stuff and my stuff...they were rather easy to deal with, my issue will be dealing with insurance if my shop catches fire lol they will probably tell me to pound sand. No metering problems.

If your wind turbines are 3 phase A/C you can buy a similar grid tied (cheap chinese ) inverter ( I have one)which allows a 3 P AC input and a GT/Mains connection + a DC Dump load output (could be Bt bank) etc. Can make a more simple setup. NB bit tricky finding the inverter supplier. the DC input ones which Do NOT seem to oftent like a Batt bank input over a PV cell input I have a lot of Dead inverters also re Direct Batt connection onliy

Ha so you charge a 48v bank but split it and discharge it as a 24v, I thought about doing this but had no idea if it would damage the battery bank if some drained faster than others, very interesting. the problem I found when using a grid tie off a battery was the battery voltage restricted the amount of wattage the inverter could pull, if i remember mine was 37w when the battery was at 28v and as the battery drained it went down to something like 28-30w. the inverter I tried this with was a 1000w wind turbine grid tie with input voltage of 22-60v.
@ToysforWatts
@ToysforWatts 2 жыл бұрын
It's not great on the batteries, especially when one inverter is pulling harder than the other, but it works "okay". I'm not sure I would be willing do it if I were actually storing the power in expensive batteries. And yeah it does affect the output of those inverters. You only get the full 1000w if you're running close to their threshold...not with these batteries anyway. Most I normally see out of them is about 800w each.

I’m trying to run solar and a wind turbine together on a 24v system! solar is great until winter time that’s why I’m trying to run a wind turbine together as a power top up any suggestions would’ve greatly appreciated on how to do this the easiest way, I’m storing the power to run lights at night.
@ToysforWatts
@ToysforWatts 2 жыл бұрын
The best way to do it is to establish your solar system first...make it all work there. Once the solar rig is set up, tie in the wind turbine using it's own separate charge controller (you can use the same switched I'm showing in this video). You need to be able to automatically switch the turbine off the batteries when they're full and turn on a brake. I've done this using the little switches and relays shown in the video by having one disconnect voltage to the bank and the other turning on a large resistor. A decent charge controller with a dump load/brake feature will do the job very nicely, though.

I am extremely jealous of your setup, but it did make me wonder two things: 1. is there any contraption you could build/buy instead of a bridge rectifier? They have a max efficiency of 81.2% right? So aren't you losing a fair chunk of the power you produce? 2. Could you get several GTI's, parallel them (or use a relay to move higher voltages), and have each with a higher voltage input range and thus be able to handle the full Voc from even the heli?
@ToysforWatts
@ToysforWatts 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! My setup usually makes other people a nauseous haha! 1. Unfortunately in order to tie in or run appliances/tools you have be running at 60hz (or 50hz depending on location). Getting that frequency and voltage "all the time" is tricky when the wind is coming and going and the most reliable way to do it is by first converting to DC. The maximum efficiency of a bridge is indeed 81.2% and is written down in one of those ineffable laws somewhere...but it's more reasonably in the 65~75% area. There may be a way around it, but I have not yet found it. 2. You probably can, especially with higher quality inverters...which generally handle higher voltages anyway...but with these cheap things the higher the voltage you run the hotter they get and more likely they are to pop. I don't get full output from them running at 25~30vdc but they last longer. Before this I was popping one about once a month because of voltage spikes. In general I highly suggest people run better inverters than these. These are not efficient and not "approved".

I installed on my Windturbine several PWM Limiter. The Turbine can't exeed a specific voltage. Works great but in high Winds i don't get the full Power cause the PWM Limiter kills the Turbines speed^^ but it is cheap way 😅

If you have a good unit, you can program it to pass through a higher voltage. Good sealed batteries will take 14.5 continuously. Then parallel a grid tie ( if your allowed to!).

@ToysforWatts
@ToysforWatts 2 жыл бұрын
These are the switch controllers: www.ebay.com/itm/254790335380 These are the relays: www.ebay.com/itm/384663746048 I don't really suggest those relays, though. I buy them because they're cheap, but because they're cheap they fail often. You should use a higher quality relay if the system is actually important to you.

why dont you use 36 volts, for all the setup, all the wind turbines? the inverters will work nice , for sure
@ToysforWatts
@ToysforWatts 2 жыл бұрын
Believe it or not I have actually tried 36v before. It's where I started. The i1500 actually does not perform as well at 36v...it spools up too fast and doesn't make the wattage and my Heli 2.0 stalls...the Heli might work better now with the bigger blades, but I think it'll be harder on the motor.

@ToysforWatts

Since there's no dump and the inverters shut down it unloads my turbines. Luckily the weather here is reliable...we don't usually see outages in the windy seasons...but if I do I would likely end up having to go and pick up pieces of my turbines from my fields :)

His solar system is also 12 kw. He dont have money to buy expensive batteries and it wont charge in a week of bad weather. Please help tell me what to do save his system he is also from the grid. You do very good buddy like your ideas that few will try. We have to survive.

Charging a lithium battery bank can be tricky and doing it wrong can be dangerous. The best way to do it would be to use a proper charge controller to operate the turbine and just tie it to the battery bank. If he's dealing with a high voltage lithium bank he might not have much in the way of options...possibly using the turbine to charge a small battery bank that then powers an inverter to charge the bank. It would be cumbersome and inefficient, but unfortunately not many reasonable options.
