A look at the Trace Elliot Elf bass amplifier head and 2x8 speaker cabinet. Is it gig worthy? A demonstration, review and explanation. I talk about the 1xq0 cabinet as well.I gotta work on framing my shots. Feel free to ask any questions.

I've been using the Elf head with a 2x8 and 1x10 for about 18 months, and I love it. Before that, I was using a GK 1x12 combo, which in pub gigs always sounded muddy and indistinct in the mix. Now the bass is nice and clear. For pubs and small clubs, there's enough bottom end to sound good without assaulting the audience (no, I don't play death metal).

A very good demo video- no slapping, thanks! Well, I played one of these in a local GC, and the head is actually pretty good through larger cabs.. but for me- an old school guy, the ELF didn't cut it at all...they FART. And you can hear the woof in the video. They remind me of the Phil Jones speaker cabs- small drivers just don't do it for me..great hi-fi in REALLY low volume situations, but on a gig.. no.

I love mine, I just shove it in my gig back and go direct into the board at rehearsals. Great not having to lug around a cab, just turn up, plug in and I'm ready to go. One good thing about that independent volume control is I can plug a wireless earphone in and have a sort of bootleg in ear monitor, so at gigs I still dont need a cab for stage volume because I can hear myself perfectly through that.

I play the ELF with two great Barefaced cabinets (1x10). Cool setup and it weights next to nothing,..head in my bass gigbag and just 7 kgs in each hand as the cabs are so light (but powerful). This is being used for a loud Queen tribute band. Simple and effective!

@KPJohnson
@KPJohnson 3 жыл бұрын
Are you asking about the 2x8? It has a pretty even sound across the spectrum, it does not color the sound much, so you get out what you put in. The ELF head has a lot of low end to it so it pairs well with the 2x8.

Generally a nice honest tone to start with. Got very flabby very quickly when you pushed it. And not in a very pleasant way. Tube sound? Nah....! Not at that point anyway. But overall I like it. Ironically, the OD sounded better when the Master was pushed. As something to pop in the studio... erm’ maybe.

Had to read through all the comments to see if the boomy Pavillion sound had been discussed. Did you ever try picking the cab up off the floor, moving it away from a possible back wall thereby reducing the coupling voicing if you will that's recommended for a small 10" cab to get those lower bass booms out to the audience? My ELF and single 1-10" for the moment as a practice amp. A second 1-10" will be added for small parties for fun and tiny gigs which are just for fun anyways right? I picked it because the DI does the audience part but the cabs are for me so I can hear what the heck I'm playing when the PA is in front of me facing the audience. My bass has such a wide variety of tone that I need to 'hear' it for real before it's mixed with front of house. There it can be hard to pick out my sound thanks to so many frequencies being all together. Hmm, maybe I really should have turned it down in the '70's. The Trace AH600SMX is for the head banging crowd after all. Man do I miss my Sunn Magna 3800 and 4 - 18" Sunn and Cerwin Vega speakers. Thump. That was the power switch being engaged. Thanks for the informative video, sir.

I was getting boom in open pavilions and gazebos with no walls so their was no boundary effect other tan possibly the ceiling and floor. One place has definite acoustic issues that are almost impossible to deal with. I use my 8” ELF combo with a 10” extension cab quite often for small gigs and places I don’t think there will be issues. I love the sound too much. I have my Mesa gear for when more headroom or tone shaping is desirable or necessary.
@guzzialfa
@guzzialfa Жыл бұрын
@@KPJohnson Yes even floors are coupling places for bass frequencies to enhance their presence. Not just personal experience but some manuals even say get them off the ground if you experience too much boominess. I know you don't have that 1-10" anymore but if you get a chance to borrow one from a friend or dealer, give it a try. We won't even discuss standing waves, right? That would take an entire pot of coffee and a jam session go get through! Thanks for listening and responding. Kevin.

I'm mostly playing classic rock, Americana and singer/songwriter stuff with my bass guitar and big band jazz with my electric upright, so I'm into a fatter rather than a punchier sound. Any thoughts on how it sounds playing an active vs passive?
@KPJohnson
@KPJohnson 3 жыл бұрын
It works well with active and passive, even without a buffer on the input. Most of my basses are active or high output and there is a lot of gain available with them. I typically set the gain as high as I can - which is usually just before it goes into distortion mode, and then set the master for overall volume. With an efficient big 4 ohm cab this little beast can get loud with a decent amount of low end.

Great video, sir! I reviewed one of the first ones here in the UK back in 2017 for Bass Guitar Magazine and bought one myself, now a permanent fixture in my gigbag as backup. I just covered the ELF combo over on my channel (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/raxmqKthrrbQd2w.html) and in a gigging situation, the 1x10 might not be enough on its own to keep up with a drum kit without PA support, but the ELF range pack a lot of welly for such a small amp. Nice one!
