This song has a very special place in my heart. I randomly heard it once (just once!) in the radio when I was a teenager, and then I spent several years of my life (the better part of decade, actually) searching for it at least once every few months. I didn't remember any of the lyrics except for the word "breakaway/break away" (which is surprisingly commonplace in song lyrics) and was just holding tight to the increasingly tenuous memory of the song to move forward. To me, this song is the living embodiment of my ridiculous levels of stubbornness.

Hey glad you found it! I know the feeling of endlessly searching for that 'earworm song' when you only have a few lyrics to go on. I totally forgot about this track and only stumbled-on b/c that advert 'don't take away my breakaway' came to mind for no particular reason lol.

Tracy Ullman was brilliant! Multi-talented, she could do everything and was really fast on her feet witty and sharp! Breakaway recalls the early sixties, go-go dancing girl power, a great pop song in itself, it could have been on the charts in '63!--Pitch perfect, the outfits, the big hair--I was around in those days and this nails it!

You make it sound like her husband's a big American mogul - he was a Scottish TV producer. Tracey Ullman has been at the top of her profession for 30-odd years and is worth £60 million - you don't achieve that with a marriage! You obviously don't like her shows that's personal taste but come on, credit where credit's due!

this song was written by Jackie de Shannon (aka Sherry Lee Myers) who grew up in Batavia, Illinois (my home town and my parents' home town). my father had a jewelry store downtown and gave music lessons part-time...Jackie/Sherry was one of his students or so he says. as i love Tracy Ullman's many talents and always had a crush on her back up singer on the viewers right, i can think of nobody more worthy of Jackie's/Sherry's song, presumably written around the early sixties...those great days of all-girl groups.

Yes, I discovered her music as an American stationed in England in '83, so when I later saw her show in the states after I returned I already knew how incredibly talented she was and watched it. Like everyone else, also followed the Simpsons but most people never knew that Tracey was the creator of that show. After watching this, I think Amy Winehouse must've borrowed styles and really her whole approach from Tracey.

Before Baby One More Time, there was Breakaway. Tracey Ullman was so cool, and I used to copy that hairbrush-in-the-mirror routine when I was a kid. I also remember her on Three of a Kind with Lenny Henry, and in some period drama aired during Christmas 1984. Pity she hated The Simpsons...

Tracey hipped me to the hairbrush mic! 😆 I was in 1st grade when this video came out. My crush was Ronald Chambers. The night I saw this video, I said I was gonna sing this song to him the next day at school. 😂
