As far as I'm aware the line from Tara Mines to Drogheda is still open for freight, but the other lines out of the town were lifted. The line from Dublin is partly reopened for passenger services as far north as a park-and-ride station called M3 Parkway. In this video I suggest a better use of the land around that station than what is there now.

All closed railway lines on the island of Ireland should be reopened to trains to cut down on 1) Traffic Jams, 2) Car Accidents/Road Deaths & 3) Pollution.

Another superb video , last special train was an all Ireland football special from Navan to Connolly September 1991 their is a video of it on You Tube . Its baffling it is not used for passengers even if they had shuttle service to Drogheda its a no brainer .Navan has a huge catchment area it must be one of the biggest town in Ireland without a train service .

Last passenger train was Irish Traction Group's "Europort and Lemon" railtour 19 Oct 1996. Passenger trains over freight only lines were banned after the Knocknacroughery (in the West of Ireland) derailment a year or so later. Well that was their excuse. If a special were to run difficult questions would be asked of CIE as to why regular services could not run. Saying it's unsafe prevents this.

I was born at Ballybeg station on the Oldcastle to Drogheda line,my late father was Station Master there from 1932 until the line closed to passengers in 1958,it was still used for goods until 1963.i can still remember steam trains going through.

That building in Kilmessan at 11:56 is recorded as Kilmessan House - it was originally built as a private dwelling about 1890, and was used as a public house for some time afterwards. The old OSI map has a letter box next to it.

It was a pub when I was a kid in the 1980s. I think it was called Thorns. I am not sure what it was before that.

Thanks for another great video Eammon. Just a point of information for you on Fairyhouse. It wasn’t really a working station at all. As far as I know it was what they called a halt, and was only used on the days when there were races on at Fairyhouse racecourse.

There was no Fairyhouse station. The line on to Kingscourt and further north didn't pass through Malones garage, but a bit closer to the town at Navan glass and can still be seen.

Really really interesting stuff this! At about 7:50 you just passed Bective GFC, there's a really old bridge just beside the entrance to that football club which I assume the train went over! But would have had no idea if I hadn't watched this

Great video Eamonn. For your information, a culvert was installed under the M3 at around 7:40 in your video. This was a last minute concession. While better than nothing the line approaches the motorway at grade and would need to be regraded either side. If you look at street view closely you will just see the concrete face of the culvert as a thin grey line with an angled bit each side of the thin line. It can be seen both sides of the motorway but you have to be looking for it. On the negative side Meath Co. Co. laid a main sewer or watermain along a few kms agound Dunsaney in the mid 2000's. Mad! They probably had the line as a "strategic transport corridor" on some stupid colouredey future action plan map BS but the water services section didn't see it.

It wouldn't take much to reinstall it, a few CPOs on about ten houses and Kilmessan Station and thats it, no need to change coarse at all, but don't hold your breath, I've been hearing about this for as long as i can remember but unfortunately the greens are doing as little about it as any of the other did. They want us all out of cars so provide us with cycle lanes for our bikes and that's as good as it gets with this lot. Don't be surprised if they turn ir into a greenway.

Another good video, but again, you can see so called progress has erased so much history it will never be recovered. Its truly awful to see the damage being done.. Age of steam actually started in sw England, the cornish tin mines.. a worker watched a boiling kettle and thought "if that drove an engine, we could pump air into the mines" - so it was done. Then Stevenson put the engine on wheels and trains was born. Cars was far too expensive and rail opened holidays to common folk and transport for business. Now we knock it all down and erase history for progress.. criminal.. why can't we have both? Thankfully there's some places around the world that respect history and preserve somewhat, but none are in Ireland.. There was 1 preservation railway in the South, but it no longer operates. Preservation society does run steam trains on the main lines from time to time, but it's not advertised so well and seems more like an after thought.

what about the 45 year contract to pay for the M3 motorway when the state pay for that you can look at "pipe dream" Navan to Dunboyne Rail line and all the meath td,s kite flying for votes when you have an existing CWR rail line from Navan into Drogheda why did irish rail build the biggest free park & ride car park in ireland at M3 PACE Dunboyne 1200 spaces because Dunshaughlin / Ratoath are close to it
A closer look at the Portadown-Armagh railway line
