Some things were "meant" to be. Following High End Munich i spent a few days in Switzerland that included a visit to Micha Huber's HiFiction factory in Turbenthal. The factory tour video is on this channel. It includes the launch of the new Thales Magnifier phono preamp/preamp.
Early in the afternoon, following the tour, I overheard two of HiFiction's distributors talk about driving to Schlieren to visit HSE Swiss, manufacturer of, among other products, the Masterline ML 7 phono preamp. Coincidentally I am supposed to get one of these beauties to review so I asked if I could join Slobodan and Vladimir and they joked "Are you comfortable getting in a car with Slobodan and Vladimir?" I said "Sure!" And off we went.
Robert Huber, the mastermind behind HSE Swiss (and no relation to Micha Huber) joined Studer/Revox in 1981 and stayed on for thirty three years. He was a development engineer in the R&D department. Huber holds fourteen worldwide patents acquired during his work for Harman International (which bought Studer), Soundcraft and AKG. He's also a musician.
Huber founded HSE (Hard & Software Engineering) in 1987 while still working for Studer. He's designed and built a variety of well regarded pro audio pieces found at many of the world's best record studios.
The Masterline 7 phono preamp resulted from three years of work, basing it on a high-performance studio microphone preamp he had previously designed that turned out to be too expensive to be produced in Switzerland, but given the demand for cost-no-object high performance products in the audiophile world, Huber turned his too costly to manufacture microphone preamp into the built by hand Masterline 7, which he introduced in 2019.
Mr. Huber took a lighthearted approach to my visit despite the seriousness of his endeavor so please do not get the wrong impression as you watch the video, which shows a relatively small operation in which he employs but a few people who do the assembly, while many of the parts are fabricated by outside sources, who, as you'll see, do likewise for some other top Swiss audio manufacturers.
Mr. Huber is soft-spoken and his English is heavily accented so you'll have to listen carefully to catch all that he says. I found the visit fascinating. By coincidence a sales person from Orbray, the cantilever/stylus manufacturing company was visiting from Japan. Huber is working on a high performance phono cartridge.
This visit was a perfect capper to a wonderful week+ in Germany and Switzerland. I hope you enjoy this rather informal visit. By the way, the Masterline ML 7 costs $89,000 or $100,700 with variable EQ. It looks like a million dollars.

Sometimes the surprises tours, are the best tours! Can't say I understood everything from this legendary designer/engineer but he has great enthusiasm and probobly a great sense of humor! It does t appear he gets many interviews and was enjoying showing off his product. Those Japanese magazines of audio are good mines and they go back for many years. I wish someone would translate all those to English someday. Many in the states are not aware of how hardcore the Japanese market is and has been for years. Thank you Michel !

LUXURY. At least they are honest about that and don't do false claims about sound like other high-end companies do...

pretty nice tour, tough to hear the responses to the questions. Interesting point you made asking if the employees have listened to what they build. These phono stages are priced above the Boulder phono stages. Pretty stiff competition. Sure would be interesting to hear one. He pointed to and mentioned the transformer several times but was not clear what it is. Where you able to determine if that was a step up trans or some sort of isolation transformer or something else? Perhaps the variable EQ option could be used for a tape head pre. Very similar gain requirements for a tape head and LOMC cart impedance and loading can be different.

There are no step up transformers in this phono preamplifier. It has a great deal of gain and very low noise. What he was pointing to is the coil used for the selectable "rumble" filter....

The Swiss make such amazing, world class audio products. I would have to take out a load to pay for just the box it comes in, but it sure is wonderful to see and listen to. But why have 2 gain adjusts rather than a single gain + balance on their phono preamp? Much easier to get the output of the channels correct in the latter way. P.S. I understood most of what Mr. Huber says... but then I've seen a lot of Schwarzenegger movies.

This allows each channel's signal goes through only one variable resistor whereas with volume and balance controls the signal has to go through 2 variable resistors in series. The designer is going for a purer signal path over ergonomics.

@@HP_____ Ah, ok. I would personally prefer the convenience of a balance adjust, but that makes sense. Thanks for the reply.

I agree with others it is very hard to understand what this fellow is saying & if the answers sink up with the questions. The components look very good but, the whole office & construction environment, seems very nonsequitur! I have watched the recent videos on tours of the Italian high end audio companies, excellent in both the areas I mentioned above & the difference is night & day compared of this.
