Here is my tip, when pouring from that kind of can if it is full. Turn it half a turn so the spout is at the top. It will splash way less and lets in some air giving you a smoother pour.

The advantage of race fuel, specifically high octane, is that you can advance the timing for even more power. Depending on the race fuel, it may require carb jet changes to achieve proper air fuel ratio.

Race fuel alone is pretty useless in itself. If the octane is higher with race fuel,just increase ignition advance. If you have a pretty low compression ratio engine you make things nearly worse with a longer to start to ignite fuel.

Clearly to take advantage of higher octane you have to add timing (or more boost on a forced induction engine) The only reason she gained power is most likely due to the fact that the carburetor is jetted wrong and the higher octane is able to correct it.

The increase of timing everyone wants too add will also increase the parasitic loss of power. The specific gravity of the fuel will be higher and they need to adjust the AFR before changing anything else , Increasing octane in itself will cost you power. It may have been a oxygenated fuel

Smoky Yunick had quite a bit to say on the subject. See if you can find someone who collected old issues of Circle Track magazine when he wrote articles for it. And buy them,or if sold electronically nowadays. He wrote for quite a few magazines(Say Smoky was a column he had in the 60s). Collecting all of his written stuff is far from easy,but there was/is a Peterson publication called Smoky Yunicks Power Secrets. Not for tractors,but an IC engine is an IC engine. I think it also had a bibliography in the back(old memory). Not perfectly what you are after,but it should be a pretty good beginning.

Huh? I don't see anyone asking for tricks to being a better tractor puller. I do, however, see several good suggestions on how this dyno test can be a lot more of an apples to apples comparison. Several very good questions and suggestions have been posted on different adjustments that could be made to give a true answer of whether changing fuel actually gained horsepower. Right now, there are too many unanswered questions and other plausible explanations for the horsepower difference other than the fuel alone. It's a neat video, and with some more thorough and controlled testing, could provide some interesting results.

@@moorepower7 I think Rachel was making one comparison and one only. In fact, testing one thing at a time IS the scientific method. Since there are nearly infinite possibilities, she couldn't realistically cover them all in a video. Thanks for the lecture though.

For a comparison between the fuels you're running the Dyno correctly. If your testing the power you are not, you have to use the chart supplied by the Dyno company to where the M was tested at it may be dynoed at 530 PTO or maybe 550 . 540 is the PTO speed but not necessarily the dynoed speed as tested

Just barely above the 5% that could be chalked up to measurement error on the instrument. Have you tried advancing the ignition timing with race fuel? The benefits of higher octane are best found with higher compression and ignition timing. Pretty cool to have a dyno. Great way to mess around with tuning.

Same thing I've been saying For Years about the Hit & Miss Engines running better on High Octane Fuel. They DON'T NEED the High Octane to Control Detonation, as they aren't even Remotely High Compression Engines needing the High Octane Fuels Slower Burn Rate (which Controls Detonation) but the Slower Burn Rate allows the Fuel to Burn/Expand throughout More of the Power Stroke, Versus having a Quick Explosion with a Spike in Pressure at Top Dead Center (from Low Octane Fuel) that Quickly Bleeds Off through the rest of the power stroke. In a Low Speed Low Compression Engine it gives More Power because of that, while at Higher Speeds a Low Compression Engine Will LOSE Power running too high of an octane because the fuel isn't all burned during the power stroke. At a Mere 540RPM a Tractor Never Reaches that point of Losing power from it. At 4,000 , 5,000 , 7,000RPM and Higher you will make The Most Power Your Engine Can Make by running The Lowest Octane it Can Handle without Detonation, and of course, The Higher The Compression, The Higher the Octane Requirements. Ideally You would want to run Higher than needed Octane at Low Speeds for More Low-End Torque and then Switch Over to Lower Octane (as Low as the Compression Ratio Will Allow) as the RPM Increases, which would be damn near impossible to control with a carburetor, but with a set of custom heads with Dual Injectors plumbed into different Octane Fuels, it could be switched On-Demand as the RPM changed, up and down.

Race Fuel? Just higher octane or is it oxygenated? Octane by itself DOES NOT add power it is just the resistance to detonation. If you made power with just octane you had your timing to far advanced and was detonating. If you have a computerized ignition system that has a knock sensor and is setup aggressively to auto advance timing then maybe....
@erichuff6945
@erichuff6945 4 жыл бұрын
You didn't mention the specs. of the fuel. Modern pumped gas or off the rack gasoline at best is 92 to 94 octane. When I was buying cam II racing fuel it was 104 and 110 octane. The higher level needed more timing advance, which is why you run a high octane if your not bumping up the compression. I'm not sure what the compression ratio is on your tractor but with 104 I would want no less than 9.5:1. I moved from race fuel to avgas because of the benefit of the lead. All the lead in avgas can let you tune the timing through the roof with low compression and not get a spark knock. If you are allowed to run an electronic conversion from points that will make a difference to. You should try race gas with lead additive and some timing adjustments.

I think that's why its actually more important to have those questions answered. There will be plenty of guys who go just once or twice a year and in their mind... "I'll just pour some race gas in it" and away they go. The problem with that line of thinking is that at a certain point, its a diminishing return on investment. Pouring 100LL or VP MR-III into an older tractor like the M, without any additional work done to the head or pistons, doesn't usually net you any gain and due to the low compression ratio can actually rob you of any power.

I’d think the gain is more to do with the race fuel having no ethanol. “Regular gas” these days is at least 10% ethanol, which makes the fuel less powerful due to fewer BTU. Unless you’re running high compression (10-11:1 or higher in a tractor), which I doubt an M&W kit alone could do, the high octane fuel could actually cost a few horsepower compared to a lower octane, 100% gasoline fuel.
@MFKR696

Ethanol also destroys rubber parts, including o-rings, injector seals and gaskets. Far as I'm concerned, Ethanol has no business being mixed with Petrol. They don't cut Petrol with Ethanol for any reason that's a benefit to us. They do it for the same reason a drug dealer would cut cocaine with baking powder. More profits.

call me skeptical, but I think you pulled the tractor RPMs down a little bit too far in that first Dyno run compared to what it sounded like in the second run. Also, high octane fuel such as race gas will actually give you poor performance in a low compression engine. Mainly because high octane fuel is designed to delay ignition for high compression engines while low octane fuel is designed to ignite sooner.. The reason high compression engines need high octane fuel is because the higher compression will ignite the fuel quicker giving you detonation or pinging with fuel that is too low in octane. There is nothing to be gained in low compression engines with high octane fuel, just the opposite is true. Research it!

I have a 1950 8n tractor, new starter,solonoid,battery cables, all electrical connections cleaned. but it cranks real slow and not start, but if I pull start it it will start ? got any suggestions? ps. it cranks a little faster with all the plugs removed

It should crank very easily and faster with no plugs. Did you somehow get a 12 volt starter on a 6 volt system?

Try replacing the ballast resistor. It's needed to add electrical resistance to cold wiring during a cold startup. If it's bad it'll be hard to cold start. But will start ok when warm. It'll crank faster with plugs removed cuz the engine has no compression that the starter has to overcome.

60 HP with regular gas. What did you do to that tractor? 450 engine with fire crater pistons? Wouldn't surprise me. With oversized sleeves and pistons, the M engine would put out about 45 hp. You cannot put 450 sized sleeves and pistons in an M to my knowledge.

there are too many variables that have not been accounted for. it seems that neither the tractor nor dyno were up to standard operating temperature. the power potential of the fuel was not exploited without proper tuning for each. also, try propane!

Man, I need to move to America and find a vibrant lady who isn't afraid to get grease on her hands.

Not all ladies in America are ready and willing to stick their hands in grease bro. Maybe around your area you can find some humble enough. Don't be fooled by America. This is a place like any other in Earth.
