I don’t think I’ve ever seen a comparison like this between Deere and Kabota. The comparisons you’ve done so far have been great. Thank you. I have a 1025R and may be biased, but I bought the Deere because of the foot petal placement, the loader control placement, and the resale value in my area. I've run water cooled dyno's quit a bit breaking in new tractors when sold from the dealer. You can see big differences in the same model/year tractor. Most will be close, but you'll see out liners, over and under spec. Engines increase in horsepower the more hours the engine has, most run the best right before they blow. Some brands are known to overrate horsepower and some underrate them. More common in the lawn mower industry. We sold 66 ford tractors to the state of Indiana once and had to break them all in. Most numbers were close, but i'd say 6 units were off and 1 was way off. we found to be Injector pump problems. Good idea of testing Tim.

Really enjoyed this video-- and this series! As to the Horsepower meter, I believe there is an electrical equivalent. Horsepower may be compared to electrical watts. To get watts, you need both voltage and amperage. To measure horsepower (watts) this setup uses hydraulic pressure (voltage) and shaft RRM (amperage). The gauge is actually measuring pressure. In order to calibrate the gauge in horsepower, you have to have a fixed RPM, thus the 540 RPM. Hope that makes some sense!

Even tho it may not seem like it this is extremely difficult to do.. the work, time, and research that you are putting into each and every one of these videos is outstanding and nobody should be offended.. not one bit.. anybody watching these videos should be THANKFUL that they had the opportunity to learn so much about these two tractors and to be able to see it whether they currently own one or whether they are deciding which one to buy.. you are amazing Tim and I love all of your videos. Usually he is showcasing some of the many products EA manufacture or market. Apparently Ted's family goes back generations selling Mules to modern implements. This video he dragged the dyno out to show how to ( legal ??? ) tweak the diesel injector pump to increase the engine output of a New Holland tractor. Fun stuff . Generally dynos have a range in which they are accurate. I don't dyno small tractors because our large dynos that we use on 150+ hp tractors won't give accurate readings at low HP ranges. Not sure how that may have impacted your results.

Some close numbers on the sub-compact tractors. I figured one would be somewhat higher than the other, but its interesting to see how close they really are but over the manufacturer's rated PTO HP....I guess that's why so many people with their sub-compact tractors are running PTO attachments that are slightly over the tractor's ratings. This was a really interesting test....I too would have liked to see the 1023r and BX1880 to compare to the larger engine versions....and I too would bet they're pretty dang close to each other. People can do some really interesting things with those little tractors you wouldn't think they could do....I think a lot has to do with having the right amount of ballast and someone in the operator's seat that really knows what they're doing.

A few thoughts... Old rule of thumb is 5hp per foot of Implement. It can be conservative, but also generally matches up correctly with the width of the tractor. Just food for thought for folks in the market. To counter that general rule, I ran a 60" tiller on a 1023e one fall tilling gardens and plots for folks. I bought it setup with the tiller already, so wanted to try it out. It never failed to perform on virgin ground or previously tilled areas. I was impressed. Secondly, I wonder the last time that Dyno was calibrated? A 5hp margin of error on the 5075e is not as significant (percentage wise) as the same 5hp margin of error on the subcompacts. Lastly, the only machine that has actual test results on tractor data is the 5075e. These seem to corroborate your test with it outperforming claimed hp. Link below. www.tractordata.com/farm-tractors/005/7/9/5793-john-deere-5075e.html

I can see it being an epa issue on the power rating. At buckley they have a pony brake and they use a formula and pull the engine down in 10 rpm increments and use a scale reading so you can see the power curve of the engine. Next year ill take loader off at buckley if i can build loader prop stands and get there rpm measure vs my tach so i can get a realistic measure where i want my rpms for my max power doing field work
@dand33911
@dand33911 4 жыл бұрын
I think you're right Tim, on a small tractors the EPA is the reason they're so underrated. I was told when I bought my 26hp tractor it made the same power as the 33hp one because the DPF robs power. It's like 60's muscle car horsepower ratings for insurance..
@GoGoggansGo
@GoGoggansGo Жыл бұрын
The DPF doesn’t restrict power “at these lower power levels” as much as it fucks with the powerband a lot. It tends to make the engine very laggy and almost meh at Low rpm’s, even if it’s hitting it’s rated power output. In alot of way the situation is worse than it was in the 70s because brands aren’t going to invest long term tech into diesel emissions. So you’re going to most oems just throw boost or displacement at the issue, and that doesn’t really Remedy, the underline power curve issues
@dand33911
@dand33911 Жыл бұрын
@@GoGoggansGo When I posted that comment I had a kubota B2650, rated at 26hp. Had a 60 cubic inch engine if I remember correctly. I now have an L2501, rated at 24hp, 100 cubic inch engine. 40 cubic inches more, but makes 2 less hp.. allegedly. The L2501 engine has shims under the injection pump, essentially limiting the lift, restricting power. Take those shims out and turn up the fuel a bit. 35 pto hp. Reliably. 0 emissions.

Cool stuff. I'm just beginning to look @ a subcompact. I have a friend who I think has a 1025 (about 6 years old so maybe that's changed) and I went into this wanting a Kubota. Now I'm less sure. The lift test was very helpful as was the maneuverability since the 1025 looks like such a bigger machine. Looking forward to the last few installments but it seems like you're being pretty fair.

I have a Yanmar SA324 which is the same engine the 1025r uses. I had a JD455 which had a Yanmar 890cc 3 cyl diesel rated at 22hp. The Yanmar 1200cc engine (rated at 23.9) hp used in the SA324,424, and the JD 1025r is 400cc bigger so it has the potential to have 28 HP at least. They are underfueled, hence no black smoke. They can be turned up to the point of slight smoke under max load.

Older tractors were much heavier and some of them had the PTO tied to the hydrologic pump. So an older heavier tractor with 30 HP or so is not going to as well as a newer lighter tractor with 22-25 HP and an independent PTO and most of the newer sub compact and compact tractors are also 4 wheel drive which is another advantage.

if the small deere and kubota are reading over the rated hp and is correct the bigger deere is well under stipulated hp. With the ePto, if you wanted the same hp as in normal mode the 3 or so reduction in hp would mean lowering the revs, therefore saving fuel in e mode for same output. if that makes sense.

I’ve been saying this since i got my 1025r they’re definitely sand bagging these 25 and under HP engine. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if they’re making closer to 30hp all day long at the crank. You can thank a competitive market and regulations for that. It’s not that hard to surmise, that they’re fudging the numbers a bit to get above the competition.

That was interesting , I don't know if Deere still do it but they used to advertise the full HP right out the box on new tractors. so on day one if it was 150 pto it was, when everything got bedded in a freed up you'd quite often find a stock tractor was more HP. Something like an IH might of been lower like 125 new, then say 150 hp after a few hours. Just like they say with cars and trucks the mileage should get better after X miles L.O.L. I have one of those Dyno's sitting in my shop, the local tractor dealers quit farm equipment repairs and went full automotive/ heavy truck instead. it was sitting in the corner dripping oil for years, they wanted to expand the shop taking one of the walls out. The day I was in the boss was mad with it and said make an offer it's bargain of the day. I just jokingly said $200, thinking it was worth way more. He said done it had better be cash, off to the cash machine I went. They loaded it in my truck, now it drips oil on my floor in the corner L.O.L i got to fix that, and want to use it to run in a Perkins I'm rebuilding for a customer tractor. Thanks for the video, Take care.

That was a true treat! I have a feeling they were right on the money speculating that dyno was about 5 hp off. Might be calibrations, might be temperature related. May even be something to do with the accuracy of each gauge pertaining to the measurements to get the rated hp. Would be really cool to see how that old dyno worked with a tear down! When my dad grew up on the farm, they used to call the ol two cylinder johnny’s “putt- in - now nows” after that characteristic pop they had.

Tractor Time with Tim, that is an oddity. I still haven’t really wrapped my head over how that one tractor did low numbers at all the different rpms. If only you could have ran it against another 2038 to compare. It’s true that every machine even if the same model will vary power off the assembly line. But we will never really know what’s going on. We know the 1series can’t possibly have 100% efficient pto, therefore we know the dyno numbers are about 5 high, which is roughly true for the BX as well. I guess I use the extrapolated data to fill the gaps, throw out the outlier. But it is odd.
@paullambert2668
@paullambert2668 4 жыл бұрын
@@s1283 It doesn't necessarily mean the dyno is off, it could mean their rated power from the factory is under-stated. There has been suggestion that they make more HP than is written on the label specifically because of EPA regs, and the standards for how you measure tractor HP aren't that clear - there's room to get different numbers by testing a bit differently. I'd definitely heard the L2501 makes more power than it's rating, I am a bit surprised to see a BX putting out more power than it's rating, but you never know.
@s1283
@s1283 4 жыл бұрын
Paul Lambert exactly why I would have liked to see a second 2 series to compare. But it def seems the two sub compacts are running 5 high on that dyno from their rated number, basically making the engine hp the same as the pto, which is improbable that they would make 100% hp rating at the pto from the flywheel.

The difference between horsepower and torque is that torque is a measurement, and horsepower is a calculation. The reason HP is off at the wrong speed is because a dyno measures torque; horsepower is merely a calculation of measured torque at a specific RPM. Wrong RPM = wrong HP calculated, hence the conversion chart.

Are they both HST? Im sure the PTO HP would drop while HST is being used

It's interesting that the unit read the PTO horsepower for the 1025r above what even the engine is rated for (24-25 hp for the PTO with an engine rating of 23.9 hp). I'd say there was certainly an issue with accuracy, but a great comparison between the two tractors. On an unrelated note, I wonder why the 1023e has a PTO hp rating of only 65% of the gross engine output, while the 1025r has a PTO hp rating of 75% of the gross hp rating of the engine? I'd expect the internals of the PTO drive to be identical between the two tractors.

While the absolute accuracy (actual numerical HP) of that dynamometer may be off a bit, the relative accuracy (between tractors) within the narrow range of HP produced by the the BX, the 1025, and the 2038R, is extremely good. In other words, the actual HP for each might be off by up to a couple HP, but the differences between those smaller tractors is probably very accurate. Maybe not such good news for 2038R owners (although that lower HP could be a quirk with Tim’s unit), but the BX and 1025 owners will be very happy!

Very interesting Tim for sure. I'd be curious to see what my 5065e Pulls....The cab on that 5075 must be why it's not pulling as much as it should. Again very interesting video brotha....I'm impressed. Hope this video does well for ya! Josh

Hey Josh. The 5075e is actually above the rated hp.

Seems that the dyno is reading pretty consistent 5 to 6 lower then the stated actual. Both tractors had 5 more hp then manufacturer stated. Interesting

If that is the case, the 2038r has a serious problem!

Sounds like the result with EPT mode is more power is directed to the PTO versus the drive train.

Well, I don't think our test was truly fair. He had the throttle set to WOT...then pulled it down to 540rpm. ...rather than setting it at about 560 pto rpm, and then pulling down to 540. So, it was lugging the engine pretty hard. I didn't know that when I was making those statements. Having said that, my comments are still true, we were getting 65hp at the ePTO 540 speed, so i didn't remove (or revise) these comments.
