My dad grew a locust grove at the back of our farm. We used galvanized mesh flooring, walls and top outside of the roosting coop... and locust poles all the eay around,, and fir siding in the housing coop itself. It was built on a hill so raking out underneath was very easy, and we'd mix the guano with our cow and horse manure and rotting hay for fertilizing our 6 acres of field corn that we'd harvest and grind to feed our chickens.

Picked up this coop today from a local TSC for almost half off because it's damaged. Gotta replace a board and piece of wire and she's good to go!

I bought a cheap tiny coop from chickencoopoutlet online because it had solid walls not slat pieced walls. The trim is already warping one month in where we had to screw back in the roof trim because they used tiny nails and the hinges that came undone. For the floor I knew just by looking at it that it wouldn't last long as thin as it is so I put down linoleum tiles over it before adding hemp bedding. I got the stick on tiles for $10 for 11 sq ft.

I have this coop, painted it the same color too. I built a 2x4 base out of treated lumber and screwed it to that and put wheels on it and handles so I can move it around. I have 6 birds and its a bit tight for them now that they are grown. Overall its a pretty good coop though.

I did the wood base as well. Looks like a raised wood foundation and makes the coop a little taller. Then added hardware cloth to bottom of base. I have 4 hens for now. Sort of wanted to get two more. Mine free range aswell and have a large run. I added four more roosts. If they are there just to sleep maybe its ok?

You should see where the coop is now. Working on building a fence in a newer area since I have bees over in the original chicken area now. If I can ever stop being lazy I’ll have the video out sometime in the next decade lol.

We bought this coop. We had no issues with it at first, and it was very pretty after painting it, but it's not working out for us. It's too small, much smaller than it's advertised, and it needs a lot of tweaking to be truly predator-proof. My husband is currently building a new coop out of heavy pallets. We're thinking about using the old one for quail or rabbits, but it'll need some work to keep the bad guys out. I don't think it's worth the money they charge for it at TSC.

In 2022 it's still a decent value I believe. Cost of material being what it is and lack of time. If you have the skill and more importantly the TIME. Time is money after all.

I completely removed my waste pan. I let the waste just land on the floor then cover with shavings and rake it up. Not sure what the purpose of waste pan is. I added more roosts so they move around. Every coop I have had, I remove the waste pan and let the poop fall to the ground. Cleaner, less smell, breaks down.

Do you happen to have snow where you live? Also, do you think three nesting boxes would fit in there? I noticed you have two, but I was wondering if three would fit equally thank you so much for this video.

Answering from another account since I’m not signed into my farmstead account. 3 prefabbed boxes won’t fit. At least the ones I got from tractor supply don’t. Two fit with a little room to spare

Just got this coop. I had an awesome Amish-built one but divorce is the mother of invention. LOL. Quick question: when you talk about protecting the floor of the coop, do you think lining it with contact paper might help? I’m willing to try anything that extends the life of a coop while making it easier to clean up chicken *bleep*!
@LayneFamilyFarmstead
@LayneFamilyFarmstead Жыл бұрын
Essentially, yea. The wood in contact with the ground is more susceptible to rot even painted. You can do contact paper. Or, and I’m thinking of this long term. Get some concrete footers, build a basic framed floor with 2x4 and plywood then set the coop on top. If you just wanna predator proof the base for digging. Set the coop on some chicken wire or just welded wire fencing and cover it good to save the chickens from getting caught in it.

@@LayneFamilyFarmstead OMG, I’m dying. I totally asked that wrong and got a fantastic answer. When you talked about the floor of the coop I thought you meant the inside of the little henhouse. How sweet are you that you answered, even though it read like I wanted to contact paper the earth!!!
@LayneFamilyFarmstead

I mean it’s been a while since I watched my own video. But henhouse… contact paper would work. Or just rip the floor out and replace with better wood.
